When you're 40 you have less chance of getting pregnant in comparison to when you're in your prime. I know someone who's had 2 girlfriends in their early 40's and he's had no success at getting them pregnant. And before you ask, he has had his sperm count etc checked. I would say around mid 30s is a good age.
In regards to your comment about sex being for the sole purpose of making babies, yes, biologically, but it is also about pleasure. As long as you play it safe.
