Why do some of my classmates follow David Cameron on Linkedin?

I'm at an extreme left wing Russell Group university studying economics. When I say extreme left wing, I mean universities are generally left wing but my university is more left than probably Leeds or Edinburgh.

It is common for our economics students aiming at a job at Big Four, personal banking or investment banking, depends on the competency and desire for making money. And the financial job in London are dominated by Tory and recruiters care about if you could fit in as we all know.

These are the background.

I've seen some of my classmates who went to the very humble state schools in the north of England even Scotland yet follow David Cameron in the influencer section on Linkedin. I mean, some people follow the influencers because they post occasionally on Linkedin but that's not the case of David Cameron.

After the 2015 general election, we all realise there are shy tories in our life. But I just can't understand the reverse phenomenon. If you went to an expensive independent school, no one will be surprised you are a tory. Or if you went to Exeter or Durham, you still can get to know a lot of people if you support David Cameron openly. But here at our university, supporting David Cameron means you won't have common with most of people even those from the EU. I'm not sure where the international students stand. They pay very high fee though. . There are a lot of students from the EU and the rest of the world in my programme, I guess British politics can't bother them.

So I'm thinking if these people do that simply for connecting with 'like-minded' recruiters and the current bankers in the city, which means they follow Cameron for getting themselves a good job. Otherwise, I can't think of any reasons. What do you say?

Employers don't care what aprty you support unless it's like Britain First or Nazi party- that might be a cause for concern lol. Maybe your friends just like David Cameron? You can follow people you don't support, you know.

I suspect they're probably Conservative voters and you're confusing a vocal minority with the entirety of your student base.

I'm not sure what going to a state school in the north or Scotland has to do with anything. In case you haven't realised, there's plenty of Tories in those: some have even made it to the cabinet.

More than you'd probably imagine. They've even had a few MPs from that particular school in recent times: Tam Dalyell, Mark Fisher etc. Not to mention Labour Party officials like the London Mayor's Director of Communications. Hugh Dalton is probably the most notable - and he was pretty lefty to boot.

I'm talking about probability. It's weid state school people studying economics at my university tend to support Tory compared with the average at my university. And I can't figure out why. One guess is hunting for a good job in finance as that's on Linkedin.

It doesn't necessarily mean they support or admire him...

I would consider myself quite left wing and definitely do not support the conservative party but I follow the conservative party, Theresa May, David Cameron and a few other right wing political figures or journalists on twitter (as well as many left wing organisations/individuals, of course).

Tbh you sound like an international who's seen a socialist worker newspaper seller outside the student union and you can't believe the police weren't dragging them off.
