I'd say:

Quand j'étais petit, je mangeais ce que je voulais, par example: je mangeais beaucoup de sucreries, alors Je n'étais pas sain, pas du tout!

Quand j'étais petit j'étais un peu gros parce que je mangeais beaucoup de sucreries et c'est mauvais pour la santé

I used "imparfait" in that sentence, I hope it helps you!
