The HPQ is considered equivalent to half a GCSE, the EPQ is equivalent to an AS level. The basic idea is the same.

Well obviously Level 3 is more work because it's worth more

EPQ is half an A-level, requires the effort of half an A-Level.
HPQ is half a GCSE, requires the effort of half a GCSE.

A-Level > GCSE

I am in year 11 at the moment and I have less than a year to complete it. If I am willing to put in the effort, should I do the EPQ or HPQ?

EPQ on a relevant topic to what you want to apply to uni. It literally took me a weekend to write, easy A* and you can talk about it in uni interviews
