Best universities for film production?

I'm currently doing my UCAS and I'm interested in doing a film production course at university. I've applied to three universities so far:

Portsmouth
Bournemouth
Middlesex

I was wondering if any there are any other universities out there that are good for film production. I'm interested in directing, filmmaking, script-writing, editing and pre/post-production. The three I've applied for I've heard are good for media and film, so I need at least another 2 more choices. Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Have you applied to Bournemouth or AUB? BU has more of a focus on TV production whereas AUB is more about film.

I'll check out AUB though. Thank you.

I've moved your thread to a more relevant forum

Here's the Guardian's rankings but others may have a different view. Always check the detailed course description to see if it's right for you.

Bournemouth University.

I applied for Film Production and Cinematography.

That course is based at Wiltshire College Salisbury (see the "Key Information" blue box on the page you linked). It's either new or a very small course. There's a lot of people apply for this course (and the photography course at BU that's also taught in Salisbury) not understanding that AUB and BU aren't the same university.

If you want to study at BU IN Bournemouth then you need to switch your course to https://www1.bournemouth.ac.uk/study/courses/ba-hons-media-production (the closest to film production offered by BU IN Bournemouth). Around 75% of applicants get an offer for this BU course. Their TV production course is more selective (54%) but if you want to get into film then a TV production course isn't a great idea.

The AUB course is this one http://aub.ac.uk/courses/ba/ba-film-production/ ....only 18% of applicants get an offer though so even getting an interview is an achievement.

For your other choices are you looking for universities in the south coast or for anywhere in the UK that's good for film?

Thank you so much.

So if Film Production and Cinematography is taught in Salsbury. How come it's on the Bournemouth University website when it's not actually in Bournemouth. That's a bit annoying lol

I'm also looking for universities anywhere in the UK. Do you have suggestions?

Gareth Edwards went to UCA Farnham and he seems to be doing ok in the film world.
Hi, the course that I'm really looking for is the most practical one, the one which will cultivate filmmakers, creatives. Some people want Film Studies, or an all round filmmaking experience including TV, however what I've really discovered is that I'm looking for something solely focused on filmmaking. I've been to a few open days + have a few others in mind. I was originally not considering any "film schools" since I wrongly thought they all required a large fee and the best were based in London. However I'm quickly beginning to realise that it is a film school that seems like the best option for me.

I went to the Film Production & Cinematography course open day in BU and liked it, although I felt facilities aren't that great since it's at the college. I discounted the Film course at the actual uni since it didn't have much practical stuff. The actual uni is great but the course isn't at it so oh well.

AUB (Film Production) at first looked great when I realised it's existence after arriving back from BU, however as I dug deeper, I found the the accommodation seemed poor, and the student reviews criticised the teaching largely.

Northern Film School at Leeds Becket looks really good; the student reviews are great and it's proper filmmaking, no TV!

Edge Hill University (Film & TV) was decent all round, but compared to the others above, it's Film & TV course feels less for the creative filmmaker, and more for the all rounder. It has a load of students (100 or more in each year). It seemed to have a lot of theory work. The campus was great though.

Anglia Ruskin University (Film & TV) was OK. I wasn't sure what to make of it. It was part of the art college; thus most of the student's work seemed quite arty. I guess that's a good thing? However, the course structure was largely similar to Edge Hill's I felt. The town was amazing though.

York University (Film & TV) was at first my favourite one after going to the open day; the course seemed really good, a least the way it was sold to me. But upon closer examination, I felt that there was an aura of snobbery associated since it required an AAB which to be honest, is ridiculous. The campus was amazing though, as well as the town.

Edinburgh University (Film & TV) seemed like an interesting course. It is 4 years compared to the others, but the town seems great. It's in the arts college and the course description on the website seems garnered to filmmakers and creatives. It's ranked HIGHEST on the league table, however the student reviews on UNISTATS weren't that great.

Then there's the likes of Met Film School, London College of Art, London Film Academy and University of Westminister. All in London, all have ridiculous accommodation costs, all out of the question.

I'll have another look at that Guardian list, and see if there's any other films schools. So far, I'm looking at it as Northern Film School at top of the list for now until I go to the open day, Edge Hill as a safety backup since I know a few people who go there and know a lot about it (plus it's nearby), and then possibly Anglia Ruskin, BU and Edinburgh. I'll have a look at UCA Farnham

I'll expand this more when I have some time with more info on what I thought of the Uni's.

There may be less expensive places to live in London.

Also I wouldn't necessarily worry about student ratings at Edinburgh. It's a great university.

I look at AUB on the open day and liked what the course entailed but was a bit concerned at their lack of facilities with it being a small university.
Good luck though! I'm looking to study Film Production myself - but I'm unsure of how to get the career in post-production and whether university is really for me!

Does anyone know if Goldsmith’s master in filmmaking - cinematography is any good?
Gloucester Uni film course is brilliant. It's (as far as I'm aware) the only undergrad course that has tutors who are specialists rather than broad brush stroke teaching that many of the courses suffer from. Forget the equipment at the unis - it's all to do with teaching.
