Do you smoke because you enjoy it or can't stop?

If you enjoy it, what do you like most?

Do you find it sexy in any way?

They do it as a statement. It's how they start in the first place. The health problems are already well known, so they do it to be seen as edgy or rebellious. They may enjoy it, but it's not why they started.

Smoking is one of the most lucrative businesses in the world.
Cheap to make, addictive and customer numbers always growing (due to growing emerging markets).

People smoke for a variety of reasons, but end up getting addicted. Nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known, similar to the level of a heroin addiction (though the withdrawal is not as bad so I'm told).

So people smoke to look cool, fit in, rebel, look sexy or just because it's their right to do whatever they want, they end up addicted and can't quit. Then they get one or another form of cancer and die, and the cycle repeats.

What is “addiction”? What does it mean?
A state of which you have absolutely no willpower and no control over your own actions seems to me to be on the level of fantasy mind-control. It is a word that destroys the notion of responsibility. Drug-takers don’t want to come to terms with their own selfish mind-set; they don’t want to admit that they’re responsible, so they invent a situation similar to that of being forced to take drugs. No, you’re just taking them because they’re a pleasure and they make you feel good.
I used to smoke (For a few months) but I stopped smoking 3 weeks ago. I started because of my friend and I continued because it gave me this nice feeling and if I was feeling stressed/sad, it would give me time to just go outside and calm straight back down. Also continued because it was hard to stop :colondollar: Although I did stop because I went through a period where the thought of smoking made me feel quite nauseous and when that went away, I thought "Well I went without for a week might as well carry on". And I'm glad I did because the benefits outweigh the cons by a lot especially in the long term. And I can get that sort of relief and calmness from other things like talking to my friends or going out to do something fun on my own even. I do miss it though... but its a temporary feeling that will damage me way more in the long term. And I am glad that I was forced to stop because I don't think I would have otherwised.

Oh yes, I take one puff and it's like I've just taken Viagra.

I just tried one because I was curious (and a bit tipsy). I quite liked it ...

Smoking costs a lot as well, that's why the share prices of

Altria Group, Reynolds American, British American Tobacco and Imperial Tobacco are massively inflated and on very high P/E multiples

Smoking is a very defensive industry, people smoke in booms and busts and are usually customers for life.

Well, they are moving into alternative products such as vaping and some fancy new type of e-cig that warms the tobacco without burning it so as to give an experience that is more like smoking a real cigarette but allegedly safer.

Smoking is never completely safe, Tobacco contains all those carcinogens. What makes it better is filters.

If you want the safest return as an investor, invest in tobacco, you are sure to do well in the long run.

I never said it was completely safe. I'm not personally claiming it is less harmful either.

Some people are very hedonistic, they seek whatever pleasure they can get, the extreme end is hard drug users and the softer end is partiers/ recreational drug users/ binge drinking.

Smoking fits very well into this hedonism, it's a pleasure, messing with the dopamine receptors in the brain. What they don't realise is they should be seeking joy, not pleasure, 2 very different things. Similar to the difference between investors and speculators in the stock market, both are very different games.

So I say let them do what they want, if they want to kill themselves, be my guest, it's your god given right to die and who am I to stop you.

Plus you'll be 6 feet under within the next 80 years give or take.

You can get your own back by buying some tobacco stock!

I recommend Reynolds American, come off a slight correction, good dividend + dividend cover, ok P/E ratio (sustainable in a sense).

I'd rather not buy stocks when it comes to tobacco, it's quite a dodgy industry to have a hand in, in my opinion
