Duterte - How can anyone defend him?

The weird support I've seen online for Duterte is unnerving. Even from people criticising him, I routinely read things like "oh well the problem is that they aren't getting a fair trial". No, the problem is that he wants to kill 3 million people for a crime that absolutely does not deserve such a punishment. In fact, much of the time what they're being killed for should not be a crime at all. Sure, dealing heroin to 15yr olds is a pretty terrible thing to do and should be very illegal. Not so illegal that you should be killed for it though. As for drug addicts, they should be in a rehabilitation centre, not in a cell waiting to be lined up against a wall and shot. Duterte apparently does not even just want to stop at drug addicts. It seems it can be anyone who has touched an illegal drug who can be served death as justice.

I find it ironic that he compared himself to Hitler, given that Hitler was a heavy drug user himself. I found it disturbing that what the Anti-Defamation League's Todd Gutnick found most reprehensible about Duterte's comments was the fact he made a comparison between his victims to holocaust victims, saying "The comparison of drug users and dealers to Holocaust victims is inappropriate and deeply offensive". Is it not the fact that Duterte wants to kill 3 million people that's most offensive here? Why shouldn't drug users and dealers be comparable to holocaust victims in this context? Holocaust victims did not deserve death, and nor do drug users or dealers. Furthermore, is it not safe to assume that many of these people have been driven to drug abuse due to their poor quality of life, or driven to dealing drugs because of poverty?

I understand the Philippines has a serious problem with drug addiction. But this problem is clearly due to broader social problems. Poverty, lack of opportunity; social problems can all cause an epidemic of drug addiction. Drug addiction is a symptom of a problem. Duterte is being incredibly lazy by not addressing the problems with his society that drive people to drug addiction (the Philippines has as serious a problem with poverty as Haiti). I doubt many people would look at the favelas in Rio de Janeiro and say the best medicine for it was slaughtering anyone who takes or sells drugs. Clearly the best medicine for Rio de Janeiro is trying to narrow the terribly wide disparity between the rich and the poor. Clearly Brazil has huge problems with corruption, and poverty largely as a result of the corruption. Poverty is also a massive problem in the Philippines, as is corruption. I don't see how anyone can look at impoverished communities in the Philippines and think that drug abuse is the problem and not a surface symptom of the poverty itself, poverty which is largely caused by the same thing that it's almost always caused by; government corruption.

So you answered it all by yourself didn't you in the end?

Government corruption is the problem and the reason they aren't progressing out of the poverty. Yet that is also exactly the reason why they don't want to! Those inner city folk, those who have some semblance of a voice love the tough stance Duterte is taking on the very evident drug problems the Philippines have. So politically it makes total sense for him to do it. It is terrible immoral and not good for the country, but it is good for him as a corrupt and immoral leader, so he doesn't care.

People really just defend him because they supported him or voted for him. Also, a lot of people in the Phillipines are angered by what they see as a rise in drug crime so want a tough response and the big Rodrigo is offering that.

Christ, it actually sounds like they're more concerned about Duterte getting the figures wrong than his intent to kill 3m people, if only he'd threatened to kill the correct number of 6m.

I can see how people in the country are supporting him. What I don't understand is how people looking from the outside in can do so.
the Philippines is a third world nation emerging from European Colonialism. it is not for us to criticise their polity.
Anti-defamation league cover up Jewish crime they are a HATE GROUP as far as I'm concerned

Here's a good video explaining the tactics the Jews use to suppress free speech

This one relates to slavery that is depicted as a White Christian gentile crime, never Jewish.

**** them, and all the Jewish groups who tell us what we can and can't know

Hitler was a heavy drug user wtf?

Let me guess...

Hitler was gay
Hitler was a drug user
Hitler had three nipples
Hitler wet the bed

The rubbish people believe coming out the Jews mouths is unbelievable.
They love nothing more to mock the man who stood up against them.

Hitler was a great man, and one day the world will know he was right.

Despite all the lies, Hitler is still respected by many around the world today LOL

Duterte is cleaning up his drug ridden country and taking back it's sovereignty from America.

Good on him. Yes he's a little extreme but he seems to be doing a good job and his popularity has only risen.

His F you to the EU was hilarious. Stop lecturing the world of human rights when your puppet countries led by America are the cause of so much mischief in the world.

As for his comments on Hitler.. who cares. Drug dealers peddle drugs. What do the Jews peddle? Porn, immorality, perversion, gender bending. The sexual revolution was very much a Jewish led revolution. Instead of getting married, having sex and having kids, you're single and spreading diseases to eachother. It is the destruction of Western civilisation, by the Jews.

TSR, where any negative mention of Islam will get your post taken down, but where favouring Hitler and supporting the holocaust is A-OK!
Try being a Filipino who openly protests him.

Wouldn't be surprised if they found your body sprinkled with crack.

Yeh, must be really tough. I think the West needs to get a bit more serious about Duterte.

Whilst it's easy to say that from here, you've got to consider the state of affairs in the Philippines prior to his election. You are massively underestimating the scale of the drugs problem the Philippines faced. Whilst it may be true that it is a symptom of other problems. that doesn't change the fact that the drugs trade was crippling the country. Removing the drugs won't fix the Philippines, but the Philippines can't even begin to be fixed until the drugs are dealt with. I mean, suggest another method of tackling the drugs trade when half the government is in the pocket of the suppliers? Recruiting ordinary people to carry out hits may well be heinous, but can you actually suggest an alternative?

It is very telling that his approval ratings within the Philippines are absolutely stellar, the kind of ratings that Western politicians would dream of.

Anti-drug policies in SEA are often very heavily supported by the public, even when they are brutal and unnecessary. It's not surprising he has got support given that context.

Clearly what Duterte should be doing is clearing out government corruption. There is no one in a better position to do so, but given that he is likely very corrupt himself, this is the option he chooses.
How can anyone defend Israel?

Since its creation it has only practised ethnic cleansing with support of Britain, the EU and Jewmerica. That is all the proof we need that the Jews, with their vast amounts of wealth have far too much influence. Your leaders can regularly be seen in speeches pledging their allegiance to Israel.

Also

When people say what European Germans did to the Jews.

What about what the Jews did to Europe? The Red Terror anyone? Jews were more than a little over-represented these atrocities. What followed of course was the White terror, who you could call fascists.. They targeted Jews, in RETALIATION.

Perhaps you should look up Stalin's Jews
I've argued against him based mainly on the trial argument and the potential for abuse of the system (e.g. being used to silence journalists, activists and politicians) on this forum, but that's just because it's a much easier argument to make that should convince even people who aren't in favour of drug legalisation.

I leave out the whole "murdering people for using drugs is completely immoral" thing just to save time and space, even though it is a strong argument by itself.

And you don't think it's telling that those who actually live in SEA and see the effects of drugs there, day in day out, take this view? Interestingly, the 3% (only 3%!!) who disapprove of Duterte neatly coincides with the 3 million figure you quoted earlier, which seems unlikely to be a coincidence.

I appreciate that you disapprove of him, but that's no reason to start talking nonsense. If Duterte is corrupt, he would have absolutely no reason to go on a crusade against the drug barons. If anything, he comes across as a somewhat fanatical idealist.

The policies are unnecessary? So suggest an alternative method of solving the drugs crisis.

Again, how is he meant to clear out government corruption without first breaking the power of those funding the corruption? You're talking as though it would be an easy matter to remove the corrupt politicians, policeman and the rest.

Not every SEA country with a population that hates drugs has a big drug problem.

That's a pretty silly thing to say. It's pretty well known that the CIA was involved in drug trafficking during the most furtive periods of the U.S's "War on Drugs". I can certainly imagine Duterte being very duplicitous.

Eradicate the masses of corruption.

Their power isn't entirely secured by the drugs trade. If he managed to destroy every drug dealer the country would still be corrupt.

But every SEA country with a big drug problem hate drugs. And I dare say they'd know better than any of us, the effect it's had on their countries.

Duterte has essentially raised a militia against the drugs trade. If this is a ploy, he's either the most stupid person in the world or so far ahead of the rest of us he's going to take over the world.

Ah yes. Eradicate corruption. Why didn't anyone else think of that?

Their power is almost entirely secured by the drugs trade. You seem completely oblivious to quite how powerful the drug barons are in the Philippines, and how much of a vice they have the country in.
