Best Sixth Forms In South London?

Don't worry if you can't go to graveney because of your circumstances, the reason people think the school is good is because a lot of smart and (richer?) people live in the area so people get better grades. The teaching is honestly not very good, few departments have any good teachers. The school only cares about your grades, not so much care of the students. Don't think I am just saying this because I don't like the school, I have been going here since 2010 and can honestly say that it is nothing special. The school is also like a million pounds in debt because they can't manage their money very well

Don't worry about telling me what you think/know about the school - actually, thank you for telling me, because I think it's extremely important that a school can provide teachers that genuinely enjoy teaching and can form positive relationships with their students, not just see them as machines that spit out grades.

I've been to a terrible secondary school from Year 7 and only managed to get out last year after they tried to hide and destroy my transfer papers and any chance of me moving schools on multiple occasions, despite the fact that I have never felt cared for by the school staff and teachers - I'd even go as far as saying that I was denigrated by them verbally and psychologically. Fortunately, the school I currently go to is amazing, and my teachers as well as my head of year feel like family to me, hence I know that I can actually learn from them because I enjoy their teaching, y'know? Because of that, I know the importance of having good teachers that actually care about the students instead of the pay, so I'm grateful for you telling me this.

To Graveney? I was merely interested in it, because all I heard from the school were positive things from other students and parents of students other than the "overrated" comment, but as always I must view each school objectively, and the criticism of the school I received is something I have to take into account. No worries though, at least there are many other schools to look for that are closer to where I live!
SE London is a large area, ranging from SE18 (Woolwich) towards the eastern part to Camberwell (SE5) and Walworth (SE17) more west. If you are able to travel to Wallington Girl's School (OK not co-ed, but if you need boys (!), there are Wilson's AND Wallington Boys nearby), it is brilliant. If you are capable of getting A*s, you should be able to pass their entrance exam.

I have advised transfer of two of my students from private schools to Wallington and they have excelled (one is now final year medical student at Brighton Uni).

Have you looked at St Thomas the Apostle Sixth form in Nunhead? It's relatively new but is getting really good results and has fantastic teaching. Teachers are great and their Oxbridge programme is really helpful at getting us into the best universities - lots of outside speakers from Kings, Oxford, Cambridge etc.

Thank you for the recommendation, it seems like a great school from your view, however I'm not interested in an all-girls' school, as I'd like to socialise with both sexes and feel more comfortable around them both, if that makes sense? Hahah, I'm not worried about relationships at the moment though; my intentions for wanting to attend a co-educational sixth form did come across as very vague, but I've already got someone special in my life so I don't have to worry about seeing other boys, fortunately. :biggrin:

I visited the website for St. Thomas the Apostle College, but it said that it was a boys' Catholic school, if I read it right. Unless it's the sixth form only that is co-educational, but I'm not certain about it. It seems like a good school though, despite the fact that I'm a bit hesitant on bursaries and scholarships. :colondollar:

That's a shame. I go to Graveney and am planning to go for sixth form. It really is a good school, and the sixth form is big and students receive a lot of help from teachers from what I've noticed. I hope you find a decent school.

I'm hearing so much about Graveney on this forum, I sort of feel as if it's a shame that I can't get there within a certain amount of time, to visit it at the very least. Many mixed opinions on the school from everyone, so I would have liked to have seen it out of curiosity.
Honestly if you're passionate about your education then you can utilise what Graveney has. But there's plenty more sixth forms that are probably just as good, so don't worry, you'll find a good school :smile:
Hm, I'm just wondering... if it takes me an estimated time of about 55 minutes to an hour and a half to get to Graveney, and it starts at 8:30 in the morning, I should leave before 7 in the morning, and perhaps wake up at around 6 in the morning then? I'm not too certain, as I'm dreadful at time management.

That sounds good. There's always student accommodation, but I understand from your original post you don't want to pay extra funds. It all depends on the courses you take. If there are places nearer you that do the courses you want, don't come to graveney because waking up at 6am every morning would be horrible. It's your call
Depends on what subjects you take at graveney, some departments are horrible.

when i went to graveney, it usually took about an hour or so and i woke up at 6, left for 7:15. it's possible, but you may find yourself regretting your decision when it gets darker.
open evenings/mornings are still going on so take a look at the school if you can; it's definitely good if you can go but it is severely overhyped (also i can't remember if they've changed this but i'm fairly sure you need to do maths if you want to do physics there)

Yeah, that's the trouble with going to a sixth form that is far away (to an extent) every day, as the days where it gets dark early are an issue, and I don't think that anyone I know will be going to Graveney or have at least applied for it, so there's the issue with no safety in numbers as well.

You are probably gonna struggle with physics if you don't do maths though, everyone who goes on to do A2 physics does maths, and the people who did well at AS level also did maths.

Yeah, I guess that's the only problem though; maybe I'll have to replace a subject I originally wanted to do with Maths, since it would be extremely helpful.
