BSc Real Estate Entry 2017

Now that the Open Days have finished, I thought I'd start a new thread for those applying for the BSc Real Estate programme area for Sept 2017 entry. I am happy to respond to questions or advise on issues over the next 9 months as people complete their UCAS forms, receive offers, attend Visit Days (in Feb and March) and wait nervously for their exam results in August. At this stage, I wish everyone the very best of luck and encourage you all to work as hard as possible to get the best grades you can!

i have a few questions as I have applied for this course and I'm yet to hear back from Reading. How does it compare to that of Planning and real estate in Manchester and UCL as I would like to know which on of the three to hopefully firm? how long does it normally take to be offered a place for this course? does Reading send acknowledgment emails as i have not received one yet although i applied more than a week ago?

Hi,

Our central admissions team usually acknowledge applications quickly and then make offers ASAP (within a week or so, depending on information provided). I've looked at the applications submitted for our 3+1 real estate and planning programme and the first 7 apps are currenty being considered. We received the first of those on 14th Oct, so it's still early days!

With regard to your decision on firming the offers, that really comes down to your preference! I hope that you have researched each of those courses/Uni's and attended the Open days. We are very confident about our planning offer at Reading and the quality of the student experience. However, offer holders have to 'look into their souls' and make their own decision. Best of luck in that.

Joe
Hello,
For a long time I've wanted to do property development (in particulalr, regeneration) and after recently leaving a course at another uni for various reasons (partly due to not doing something I enjoyed) I want to make sure I make the right decison this time. I've been looking at various courses and uni's but finding it hard to work out which is the right one forn what I want to end up doing. From your experience do people doing the Real Estate degree end up in careers which entail property development? I also wondered how valuable the RICS accreditation was in respect to career prospects and is it useful to have in regard to a career in property development?
Harry,

Yes, property development is a 'natural' pathway for our real estate graduates. To some extent, development is a cross-over between real estate and planning. At Reading we provide for that cross-over with our 3+1 UG programme in Real Estate (x3 yrs) with MSc/Dip in Urban Planning & Development (x1 yr). This is dual qualified (RICS and RTPI) and many of our graduates from that course go to work for development companies (commercial and residential). Employers (across private and public sectors, including those working in regeneration) see the dual qualification as a real bonus. Other universities (e.g. Manchester and UCL) do similar combinations....but Reading was the first!

Hi Joe,

My name is Coree, I have received an unconditional offer to study Real Estate Bsc at Reading in September 2017. I will be 20 when I start and I completed my A-Levels back in 2015 then went to work. I have now acquired some experience with a property firm which has sparked my interest to study property. I have a few questions in regards to the BSc course at Reading and I was hoping you could help me out. Firstly does the teaching of the undergraduate course take place at the Henley Business School Whiteknights Campus? Secondly how does the 3rd year of study work in regards to the selection of a specialism & optional modules. Also I am very nervous about the prospect of eventually getting a job once I graduate due to the competitive nature of the industry. Does Reading offer help with applications? e.g. psychometric testing, interviews and CV advice. Lastly will there be any visiting days in 2017 as this was not mentioned when I received my offer e-mail. I hope I haven't asked any obvious I look forward to attending Reading come September.

Coree
Hi Coree!

Lovely to hear that you will be joining us in September.

Taking your last question first, we have Visit Days arranged for the following dates:
* Weds 8th Feb 2017
* Fri 17th Feb 2017
* Weds 8th Mar 2017.
You will be invited in to one of these in the near future.

The Visit will be hosted at the Henley Business School building at the Whiteknights Campus. All the teaching and related course activities take place at Whiteknights, although we do offer study abroad opportunities, which could take place in Malaysia, USA, Australia, Japan or in European universities.

The third year specialisms/options are decided at the end of the second year and we provide briefing materials and sessions, along with student perspectives on those choices.

You are correct about the current job situation. Many real estate companies are feeling very uncertain about the future and are being cautious about recruitment. This may ease as we move forward through the year: life will probably continue and firms will need to staff their teams to cover the workloads. Of course, if you join the programme in September, you won't be seeking employment until 2020 or 2021, depending on your course choice....so things will hopefully have 'settled' somewhat by then.

The (very!) good news for you is that we have a very sophisticated infrastructure to support our students on careers, industry networking and work experience. We run a full programme of company talks, visits, mentoring, internships, mock assessment days and 1-to-1 career counselling. That support is reflected in our employability rates which are regularly in the 95-98% zone.

We look forward to seeing you at one of the visit days. This will give you the chance to learn a bit more about the course and other aspects like the careers support and the work of the Reading Real Estate Foundation. Offer holders go for lunch with our current students whilst guests have lunch with staff. We do a walking tour of the campus and finish-up with a Q&A session with some third year students who have experienced the whole programme. The overall objective is to give you and any guests you want to bring along a clear idea of the course and our wider offer and (from our point of view) to secure firm acceptances to our offers.

Have a good Christmas and see you soon!

Joe

PS Shame about your choice of football team: I'm a Spurs fan!
Thank you for answering my questions Joe, I now can't wait to visit the campus and to eventually start in September!

Shame about your choice of football team but I guess someone has to support Tottenham. Have Christmas & New Year.

Hi Joe,
I am a international student and would like to study BSc in Real Estate in Reading in Sep. 2017. Do I have to submit UCAS before 15 Jan as other UK students? Are there any quota reserved for international students and will my UCAS application still be considered after 15 Jan?
What is the secured offer based on Hong Kong DSE examination grades? Thanks for your help.

I could make a stab at most of these questions, but I think it's best if you seek answers from 'the horses mouth' by contacting our UG Admissions Team at [email protected]

The one issue I'm most confident on is the 'quota' for overseas entrants: my indicative target is x20 for 2017 Entry, but this is not cast in stone. We could recruit more or less than this, based on the quality of the applicants.

Hope this helps a bit.

We are having a series of Visit Days this month for offer-holders. Here are some photos of our people giving talks on the UG Real Estate programmes and the range of support provided by the Department, Henley Careers and the Reading Real Estate Foundation. They also met REP staff and students, undertook a taster project session and received presentations from the support services provided by the University and the Student Union. Look forward to seeing everyone again in September....depending on your A-level results!

If you know any Year 12 students who might want to find out about property as a course/career, then please refer them to our forthcoming residential summer school. Deadline for applications is end of May. It is targeted at state school students who don't come from a real estate background. Details are here: http://www.henley.ac.uk/rref/rref-what-we-do/Pathway_to_Property/rref_pathways_to_property_summer_school_2017.aspx

Thought I'd refresh this thread in order to check if anyone has any further queries about the BSc Real Estate programmes or the admissions process over the summer. We're moving into the new recruitment cycle for 2018 entry now (doesn't time fly!) but don't want to forget about all you lovely people waiting for your exam results in the summer! Post if you need advice, information or wild predictions for the new football season....Reading to get automatic promotion and Spurs to win the triple!

'Thought I'd just tie-up this thread by saying that I've just stood down from my role as UG Admissions Tutor for REP@reading. As a leaving present to the wonderful people joining The Student Room looking for info on life experiences at the University of Reading / Henley Business School / Dept Real Estate & Planning I'm posting this recent interview I did with one of our marketing team. The last word is: make sure the choices you make are your choices....follow your dreams!

Hi,

I am currently applying to study Real Estate at Reading (2018 entry ) and hoping to submit my ucas form in the next 2 weeks . I was wondering when the University will start making offers for this course ?

Kindest Regards,
Shilan
Hi Shilan,
Offers will start after application is received. There can be a bit of a wait...but normally within a couple of weeks.
Joe
Thank you for your help . Greatly appreciated.
Is there usually an interview / applicant day . When will they take place ?

Regards,

Shilan
We do three 'Visit Days' in Feb and March for offer-holders and their guests. Only do interviews for marginal or special cases. Good luck Shilan!
