Which university should I firm and use as insurance.

I'm a medicine reject.
I've got offers from :
St.George, London Biomedical sci. ABB
KCL, London Biomedical sci. AAB
Bradford Clinical sci. 200 UCAS points

I've never been to the London universities (cost of travelling there just for a look was too much).

St. George gives me an opportunity to transfer to the third year of medicine after the biomed sci. degree and up to 15 people out of 120 manage to do it (assuming you pass the academic criteria and interview). If I do not manage to transfer I always have a good chance with the post grad route as it is a good university.

KCL does not have an opportunity to transfer to medicine but is a good university if I decide to do post grad.

Bradford gives you the opportunity to transfer to the first year of medicine at Leeds (again assuming you pass the academic criteria and interview) and up to 20 out of 120 manage to transfer. But I the problem with Bradford is I hated the university and the city and people seemed really unfriendly.

Chances are I'm going to get 3A's+ and reapply but on the off chance I do not I have no idea what university to firm and use as insurance.

Unlucky on not getting any offers, a lot of us have been in your position, it's pretty standard.

I'd definitely re-apply once you get your AAA, but in relation to your question- I'd go for Kings. Problem with the clinical switch over to Leeds programme is Bradford. From what I hear it's not a great area to live in.

Also with SGUL even though it's a pretty decent bio-med course, the fact you're surrounded by medics rubs salt into the wounds of not getting in.

Have your main focus on gettin your grades & forget about those options. All the best man.

The problem with KCL is the post-grad route is even more competitive.

I have a few friends at SGUL studying medicine & they say that the bio-meds who look to transfer are pure machines. If you're willing to put the work in & I mean **** loads of work in then go for SGUL.

Post-grad anywhere is much more competitive than the undergrad route. If you're alright with being surrounded by medics then definitely go for SGUL, at least you'll have a shot to transfer. With KCL - yeah there are medics but it's not as concentrated at SGUL.

I would definitely forget Bradford though, if you don't make the transfer -you're pretty much trapped.

It's the foundation year at Bradford so if I don't manage to transfer I am not stuck at the university. If Bradford is a one year course would it be possible to apply via UCAS whilst on the course for medicine?
At the moment I'm thinking SGUL as my firm and Bradford as insurance.

Ignoring you want to apply to medicine, what is your reasoning for choosing a 1-year Bradford degree over a 3-year degree at SGUL/King's? It doesn't make sense if you look at it like that - I bet the chances of transferring at Bradford are tiny.

dont 'forget' bradford at all, it depends how desperate you are to get into medicine, if you work really really hard at bradford you could get the transfer to leeds (I know a few people who got into med like this)
Promlem with biomed is the chances of a transfer are very low. At the end of the day your main aim is medicine, you will feel like a med reject for the whole 3 years..imo go for bradford! And also apply to other universities whilst you are there, some medical schools are fine with that eg peninsula.
Good luck!

The chances of transferring are similar if not slightly higher than SGULs.
Up to 20 out of about 100-120 get to transfer at Bradford.
Up to 15 out of about 100-120 get to transfer at SGUL.

This is what I'm thinking of doing but I never really liked Bradford so it will be difficult staying there for a year.

Come on, its 1 year, and yes its not the nicest place in Britain but hey as I said all depends on how much you are willing to sacrifice..

 I’ll have you know, that I’m a very friendly person! :huff:

Inside the uni, most of the people are okay, but I think you’ll find it difficult adjusting to the people outside of uni, who are mainly drop outs of school.

The bradfordians exterior, may seem rough and bitchy. Especially towards someone ‘different’ (since it’s such a close-knit community), but they’re much nicer once you get to know them, Trust!

Regarding the clinical science. In the open day, they said that they’re the only uni in norf to have specialized new equipment for courses like Clinical science, biochemistry and shiz. Plus it’s been known that, they give more ‘support’ to their students with their assignments, compared to other uni’s, because of the students ‘background’. So all that will help to ‘better’ the grades. So they say!

And to all those people saying ‘forget bradford’ you’re only saying that cos you’ve ‘heard’ it’s bad, and it’s only one bludy ****ing year, it’ll go in a flyyy trust! Bradford is really beneficial for those who come from a working class background, since they can help you more, and they ‘understand’ you better, which is really important. Whereas a standard uni, will just treat you like any other person, which we are not!

And and and! Bare halal places to eat.

PS I’m not helping you, I’m just setting the record straight about some of the ‘labels’ Bradford has.

When I went I never found it a close knit community, I felt as though people kept themselves to their own kind nobody mixed, I felt it was very similar to my town where it is segregated. I found it similar outside as well. I managed to get lost on my way back to the train station and some guy randomly approached me asking me to tie a tie for him which I did, then when I tried to ask him for directions he ignored me and walked away.

I know I have just gained a snapshot of Bradford and I may have just got the wrong end of the stick but the vibe wasn't very nice.

About the specialised equipment in the north bit that is a bit irrelevant to me as my other options are down south. But you do raise a good point about the extra help bit which may be beneficial.

The halal bit is also pretty important as I need my protein (I don't like protein powders). I don't really want to be taking chicken cross country (I'm from the north) every couple of weeks.

If you mean by ethnic groups, then yes that is segregated. Like if you’re a gangster Pakistani, they’ll instantly accept you, but wary of any other ‘type’. But I’ve learnt to deal with that.

Aww bless looool, that is kinda weird tho…you don’t do it you jowkaaa …you just say nahh I’m busy! Yeah like when I went there, bare weird guys doing random stuff to me :wtf:
But I felt safe, since I had ma m8s. But I’m going alone to uni (everyone else is staying a year behind)..have no idea how I can ‘fend’ myself, when these weirdo guys keep approaching. :s-smilie:

Nah, you probably got the right snapshot. But obviously it’s such a different place, that’s why you’re finding ‘change’ very unlikeable. The place is very close-minded, but like I said, once you get to know the people, they’re okay individuals.

Bruv attends uni of leeds. He said it’s difficult to find a time to make an appointment with the tutor to get help with work, because they’re always so busy. And when they do, it’s like at 8am for only 1hr, and they don’t give you direct instruction, just ‘advice’. Whereas in Bradford, they sit down for a good time, and make changes for ya! Same with Leeds Met (which another sibling attends to). So I’m going by with peoples experiences, cos I’ve asked around a lot as well.

Yeah soo many uk fried chicken places trust! Looool, no you don’t want to be doing that, but if you DO, tiffin is the way to go, I swear however mangi it sounds, keeps everything fresh!

Do you attend Bradford university?

In a way I find it pretty sad how people cannot get along with other ethnic groups but then again it is understandable I mean similar ethnic groups will probably have a higher chance of having similar interests.

Anyway I'm going off topic. To be honest I'm looking for a change Bradford seems very similar to my town I'm looking for something different and the fast pace of London seems very appealing even if I parents are not too happy about me going there.

Not fried chicken, don't want it deep fried in fat :yuck:
Normal grilled chicken with no oil so halal butchers is what I am really looking for.

I would go with St.Georges to be honest...even if your not guaranteed to move onto Medicine, their rep should help during postgrad medicine....Bradford 1st year program is good, but chances of not getting in and then getting stuck at a uni and area you don't like isn't worth it.

Also I got a few guys I know at KCL for biomed.

It's not the Bradford first year programme it is the foundation year so only one year long course.

Oh well, I'm sure other uni's do something similar........but wouldn't recommend the area surrounding Bradford.

Diss that to ma manz here, they'll deck ya brav no hesitation! :gangster:
Brav up here we don't take pens to uni, we be taking knuckle dusters trust!

Exactly, hence why he shouldn't go.......dont tell me ur from bradford :/

Well why else do you think i'm posting here?! hmmm.
Please stop talking about it like asif it's some deathly place you kamini.
Plus no I don't live in posh places like cambridge like you, it's all about the thuggg lifeeeeeee.

Look end of the day bro, we got halal kfc here, nuff said!
Raggae Raggae meallll mmmmmmmmmmm
You know you want it :colone:

and....ermm.....We have more oxygen here! yeahhh...cos like country side and that...leavess....oxygen

But seriously most of the people on TSR who are from places like Oxford, obviously gonna say no to bradford, cos of stupid stereotypes that go around. They don't know shiz. Bradford's really good for Clinical science and Biochemistry. Plus it's closer to home. Why would you goo all the way to london? bare expensive. Chicken burgers alone there are 5quid, here its £2.

bludy ell do i talk alot or wot.

I didn't no...........but seriously though that uni doesnt exactly have good rep nor does the area.
I'm from London, it's no Cambridge, but a uni's environment can affect you as well.........it's good to have nice surrounding to help you focus.

kfc is 'hfa' apporved so in my opinion that's dodgy
plus plenty of halal around King's and St.Georges......loads of chicken shops, restaurants, Indian, Pakistani, Bengali, Persian, Turkish, etc.

You can get nice areas in London with plenty of wildlife...we actually have foxes and deers in London roaming around freely

Well he wants to do Medicine, think about what if he can't get the transfer to Leeds for example...it needs to be all round.
We get 2 for 2 at Sams... 2 chicken strip burgers and 2 chips
