[*]1 iPad - very good for storing PDF books instead of buying them (uni books are a rip-off)

Yeah but why not just buy the books instead of the Ipad?

What was wrong with this list? Why is it being negged so much?

This thread seems to be the usual TSR thing - admit you have some nice things - blazing negs. Claim you can do it all for a fiver plus Tesco points - pos'ed.

It's all about the context. Most people here are the "traditional skint student" so rolling up saying that its essential for every student to have a £1000 macbook and £500 iPhone and other expensive things is a bit of a kick in the teeth.
I love all the Apple haters.

Breaking down the market, the iPad has literally no decent competition. The integration they provide to other devices is unparalleled, and they provide useful, efficient apps that you just can't find elsewhere. Android tablets for me have been laggy, unresponsive and usually have imitation apps.

The iPhone has more competition, but there's no denying it was the first and best, and still remains the best. You can say other phones on Android have better specs like the Samsung, but Android apps have to be built so the slowest phone can run them, so super specs hardly help at all.

The Mac line is just a huge waste of money. Run a Windows or Linux laptop at a fraction of the price with twice the functionality.

Whilst I agree on what you said about the iPad (though other manufacturers are catching up fast) I have to disagree with what you said about the iPhone. It is not the best smartphone any more, the Samsung Galaxies are now clearly better. Better specs, coequal display, supports SD cards and the superiority of Apple apps is just a myth - the iPhone has a better build quality though, on the other side it's heavier. Major German technology magazine CHIP ranks the SGS2 way above the iPhone 4s, other magazines share this view. And btw - the SGS2 is waaay cheaper than the iPhone.

This kind of thing obviously varies from college to college. Nearly everyone at my Uni seems to have at minimum an iPad, a Macbook or an iPhone. Or more than one. Maybe I'm wrong though and just noticing them.

Maybe there needs to be a "we love Apple" zone on TSR where those people can get together and drool, uninterrupted by negging.

Probably a Laoptop that is cheap, silent and resilient.
Nothing else really.
I don't really need a £500 phone as a £10 phone from Tesco serves me just as well.

Yeah, you're right that it's lighter. You have to consider the glass and aluminium, as opposed to the light, cheap plastic of the SGS2. It's because of the better build quality you get additional weight. When I'm out and about (goin out for a night), I prefer a feeling being there, so I know it hasn't been stolen straight out of my pocket

And with services like iCloud, Dropbox and WiFi sync, the era of needing an SD card for your phone has come and gone. With storage capacities of up to 64GB, needing more space on a phone is a bit extreme. I suppose the SGS3 and the iPhone 5 are game-changers in their own ways. And the apps are better. I have Android devices and Apple devices at home and the Android apps are very almost nearly imitations, or released freely on the market with advertising because they know they can't get paid download sales on that particular OS.

I suppose it comes down to opinion, but I feel the iPhone is sleeker, more responsive, more innovative, and altogether, big enough and powerful enough to run what I need it to run. You pay the premium for all this.

A little off topic, but it's nice to have a discussion rather than a OMFG ANDROID R WELL BTTR argument

A lighter, even if you do not smoke it can make you a few friends, from people randomly asking for a light.
A rape alarm.

No doubt the iPhone's overall build quality is better (except for the screen, which is equal), but it comes along with more weight and a greater thickness. And the SGS2 is by no means of a bad build quality. Personally I prefer not recognizing the phone in my pocket, especially on warm summer days when I run around in shorts.

I highly doubt the SD era is gone. There are a lot of people who don't want to trust companies to store their private data, I don't see how I will ever use cloud services and data protection specialists are very critical about clouds. Plus, who wants to pay +200€ for 64GB instead of 16GB?

I don't really see how many Android Apps are supposed to be "imitations" - most apps are issued by independent developers that release them for both, iOS as well as Android. The whole system of apps was started by Apple and many famous apps have only been available for iOS for some time, the fact that they get available for Android doesn't mean it's an imitation, but simply that the developers started to release it for another OS. My mother has the 4S, I have an SGS2 and we can't really see major differences between apps for both. Who cares about adverts, I don't see the point in constantly paying for things on my phone (except for music etc.).

I can't really agree with that, due to it's high specs the SGS2 runs perfectly smooth, the screen responds very well. Just get a SGS2 for a minute and pull down the status bar on top - pull it up and down fast, slowly etc. - it reacts within fractions of seconds, no matter how fast you change direction, no visible delay.

Something which would really bother me is the lack of a "back" button/option in the iPhone and my mother constantly complains about it. You always have to navigate back through the menus whilst the SGS2 has a dedicated software button.

Another point about the 4S I cannot understand is Bluetooth - it won't connect to non-Apple devices, including my SGS2. How stupid is that?

Yep, as soon as ideology comes in the way discussions become ridiculous

P.S. Features the iPhone posseses which I consider superior are the camera (doesn't bother me too much, I prefer my DSLR anyway), Siri (so funny to insult or flatter her, the responses are hilarious ) and the automatic correction when you're writing. On the other hand people who prefer keeping a phone for a couple of years will appreciate the fact that the SGS2's battery is exchangeable
