it was originally an optimistic battle cry/shout of victory (not sure how else to phrase it concisely!) it basically means 'whoever says the following will be happy: true/eternal is the great/timeless lord (god)' or something to that effect you can read a loger and better explanation on wikipedia and sikhiwiki btw where from pakistan are you from? cos my grandparents were born there!
