Surds: Dividing by Negative Numbers

Scroll to see replies

21+6=2(16)(1+6)(16)\frac{2}{1+\sqrt6}=\frac{2(1-\sqrt6)}{(1+\sqrt6)(1-\sqrt6)}

Now expand the brackets.

That's wrong anyway.

You should have:

2265\frac{2-2\sqrt6}{-5}

I suspect you are not rationalising the denominator correctly as you did not recognise what steve told you earlier.

That is what he has ... he just doesn't know where to put brackets

That's the same thing. I just hadn't expanded.

Ok, if you are not sure, shove in extra brackets for clarity.

Better still, learn LaTex.
So

2265=2625\frac{2-2\sqrt6}{-5} = \frac{2\sqrt6-2}{5}
What level of maths are you studying?
In conclusion something like:

437=4+37\frac{4-\sqrt{3}}{-7}=\frac{-4 +\sqrt{3}}{7}

Just change the signs top and bottom.

Okay, I get it now... You just needed to tell me that if there's a negative number, multiply it all by -1. Could've said it one post lol, but thanks anyway.

Well, I must admit, those explanations were rather vague without much clarity, and you seem very assured of yourselves. What did you get at GCSE?

Dinosaurs didn't study GCSEs.

Ran out of rep but you'd have been negged for your ungrateful attitude if I had any left.

Wasn't ever unhappy. TenOfThem and I are maths teachers - GCSEs had not been invented when we were at school if that explains the dinosaur reference.
