At a Mechanics tutorial today I was way ahead of my other peers and got to the last question pretty fast. It was a hard question. I spent like half the tutorial on it and I asked the professor repeatedly to get tips on how to proceed once I got stuck (it was a question about proofs). I did a simple mistake in my proof which he found out, which pissed him off so much he hit the table, shouted "bloody hell, if you dont learn that you can say goodbye to first year" and then he left the classroom 5 mins after that never to return. Now I feel so bad

If it's something that was entirely new to you ignore it, don't worry, and move on. If you were supposed to already know this, or if you've had a lecture on it before, make sure you learn it NOW and apologise next time you see him.

Quite a lot of academics are alcoholics or have other serious problems in their lives. I wouldn't blame yourself, he may just have been having a really bad day.

Oh that feeling, makes you feel like crap and doesn't really get you anywhere, hopefully you can rectify the situation with your teacher. Maybe he had a bad day? I remember getting sent to the headteacher for my handwriting and being made to work on my own because of it and rewrite all my class books.

Don't feel bad. Everyone makes easy mistakes sometimes (I'm assuming you mean you overlooked a mistake in the numbers, rather than did something the wrong way? But if it's something you need to make sure you learn, just go away and make sure you know it, if it was something else, just forget about it)

But why didn't he just point it out to you to fix? Personally, I think he's the one that should apologise, not you. There was no need for that reaction, at all.

I think your professor's reaction was WAY over the top, but I think you should apologise to him anyway, just to smooth things over. And learn the proof!

Maybe he was annoyed that you kept asking questions? I don't know. I hate teachers like that though, why even bother becoming one if you are just going to shout at people? I guess it's because they're too weak for the army.

My first year tutor used to be a bit like that. To be honest it's unlikely to be worth apologising next time cause he'll probably have forgotten by then.

Did he give you help after you asked him for it?

He doesn't sound like a very good professor if he didn't give you any help and then got mad at you for making a mistake, something he could have rectified

On topic though, I had a bit of a fallout with my Sociology tutor, mainly because the class hadn't read any of the reading for seminar, you just put a bit more effort in next time, though he majorly overreacted, considering you seem to have coped fine in the other questions. Its his job to answer questions you're unsure about, though there are some uni's with staff who seem to be more interested in their research than teaching students soo..

Not anymore. The OP has alternated between having very small amounts of pos and small amounts of neg. Two greens is barely any rep at all and although I'm not suggesting the OP is trolling (as there's no reason to suspect this and a discussion of whether or not a member is a troll just leads to off topic discussion) you can still be a member with a few hundred (or even many thousand) posts and even have positive rep and still troll or tell lies. Just because someone has made a few posts on a website doesn't mean they're filled with virtue and a completely honest person.

I pissed off my teachers virtually every day for the banter and i still got the grades that i wanted. Chin up out and ignore him, its up to you to do well anyway.
