I'm finally coming to the end of my contract with orange , and I'm looking to get a blackberry 8900 on contract with t-mobile. But I'm a complete newbie so just need some help!
Basically... would I be able to just use wifi for all normal web browsing i.e. facebook, uni portal/email, yahoo email, google, tsr etc etc, without having to pay for a blackberry internet add on and not have to worry about data allowances and all that?

t-mobile is a truly dreadful network.
The coverage is average but I found that I was losing all service for a day at a time almost once a week.
the only answer t-mobile had was "we might be doing maintenance... have you tried factory resetting your handset?"
I'm not sure about your original question OP but i'f agree with the first post. Tmobile sucks, i ordered a blackberry with a new contract and it took 2 weeks to come so i cancelled it went on O2 and got it the next day. Tmobile are to big for their boots.
edit: actually OP to your original question you can. But obviously you need the WEP Key good luck

you'd also need to be in a wifi zone.. constantly - not the most convenient thing if your on a train... or just out...
definitely worth getting a data plan and the o2 looks really good. might go for it myself if I thought I'd EVER get used to a qwerty with my thumbs

btw if you call them and tell them your cancelling they usually out you through to retentions department which can offer better deals than sales in order to keep you as a customer. may work out cheaper

I have just aquired a blackberry, my contract has just been activated. But I'm having trouble with it, i can only browse via Wi-fi and not via my network GPRS/UMTS or whatever - which i pay an extra £5 for (to have unlimited). Do I have to register my blackberry or something?
Its not been a big issue so far cos I've just got it recently and havent started using it properly.. any advice?

If the £5 unlimited internet bolt-on has been added and confirmed and what not then you should be able to use the browser, you don't need to register anything as far as i'm aware. Maybe ring them so they can explain better.

you usually have to send for an install data settings. my Sony phone wasn't browsing at all because I'd managed to screw this part up. what network are you with?

I managed to find a fix.
You have to go Option --> Advanced Options --> Host Routing Table
Press the options button/wheel click and choose 'register now'
wait 10 secs, you will recieve a message saying your phone is registered.
Don't go T-Mobile, my friend is with them no matter where he is (he works all over the Leeds area), he never has signal the call always drops, breaks up or it says his phone is off, avoid at all costs.
600 mins 500 hundred texts and unlimited data allowance £30 per month PLUS £100 auto-cashback or a good redemption deal.

The reason why I wasn't going to bother with the data thing was because the phone doesn't have 3g so thought it would be really slow, but after all the advice think it might be worth it.
I know when I first get it I'm going to be so confused lol but hopefully I'l get used to it.

I would ring Orange first.
Depending on how much you've used your phone over the last 18 months they might be able to do you a good deal.
