What you wish you were told about the uni of manchester before coming

Basically, i saw a really useful one for another uni and i couldnt find one for manchester, so...here it is!

What are the good and bad points? and what would you advice all new freshers? ie what you wish you were told about the uni of manchester before coming.

Any prospective students who also has a question to ask is welcome to of course

That grosvenor place is a very international hall. Just found it hard to make friends and plus its corridors rather than flats so very loud! Suppose it's my own fault for not looking around tbh!

Before picking accommodation visit Fallowfield, I always snubbed it and couldn't be bothered to look and now spend majority of my time there anyway.

Oak House and Owens Park are pretty sociable. The Tower (part of OP) is definitely a party hall - although it has a 35% failure rate to match.

Interesting figure. Where did you get that from?

Can't say that I can back it up massively, but it's the general figure that is bandied about round here.

That said, it is believable given how much of a party hall Tower is. Ever heard of the Tower Challenge? It involves downing a shot of 40% spirits on each of the 18 floors of the Tower.

...that there's an annoying receptionist at the Michael Smith building.

Omg she's bloody awful.

Owens Park (- tree court) was ok (this was a couple of years back) and definitely party halls. People like banging on your bedroom door in the early hours of the morning, nick your food from the communal fridges and if you keep a mini fridge in your bedroom they can turn off the electricity to your room so everything goes off anyway. The fire alarm went off almost every night as well, though you learn to sleep through it.

Despite that if your a sociable person you are in a good position to find friends everywhere. I made close friends with people from Owens but ended up living with people that were based in Wilmslow halls. If I was to live in halls again would definitely pick Richmond though, always seemed to have the best atmosphere.

Whitworth Park

but yeah OP, in terms of sociability in halls, owens park and oak house will probably give you the best social life, but that's mainly due to the fact that so many people live there ( I think it's 1000+ for each.)
Don't disregard all the other places though, wherever you end up you will find people who you get on with. I was worried when I first moved into Whitworth as all the reviews said it was quiet, full of internationals and everyone had the mentality that if you didn't live in Fallowfield your social life was doomed, but it really was not the case! I've spoken to other people in city halls and they all love it too. Can't comment on victoria park though.

Tower Challenge is a legendary way to start any night where you want to be able to write a script eligible for a Hangover style movie though..

None surprisingly, I am down Whitworth quite a lot too!
My halls are social even though I'm in the city OP, I just choose to not socialise with them.

It's not difficult - you walk up to the tower and tailgate someone in. That said, if you try and do it on a friday / saturday night and you go as a group all clutching bottles of vodka, then security are liable to stop you.
