OCR Sociology G671 Pre Release May 2012

Thought i'd start a thread regarding the pre release for the g671 exam this coming may. Got the prerelease last week, Nayaks research in Displaced Masculinities in Newcastle. I'm think its going to be on participant observation? what are peoples thoughts? this is my third attempt at it haha so i need to nail it, struggling to get past a D and both times I've copied my teachers model answer word for word and it seems I'm not getting very far, he's a bit crap

ahhh sounds a pain. I haven't done a model answer on it but i've got a load of stuff i reckon needs to go in, providing the question is about participant observation. Which is basically where the researcher just analyses the subjects from a distance and has no direct contact. This is basically what i have so far
- Aim and Rationale - just a brief para on what Nayak did and state his aim
- Fitness for purpose - was his research fit for Nayaks aim and what he wanted to achieve, in this case he had to use methological plurasm as he had to use a variety of methods
- Gatekeepers - who did he have to seek permission from? Headteachers, Parents etc.
- Qualative date - explain what it is, Nayak looked at views and opinions of his subjects rather than using questionaries which would be quantative.
- Interpretevist Approach - Arguments for and against using Qualative data, mention ecological validity as the research was done in their own environment.
- Micro Approach - small group of people, potentially not the most reliable sample
- Operationalised - the questions were easy to understand before he decided to opt for participant observation
- Covert observation - Unethical?
- Going Native - Always bumps into his subjects not necessarily on purpose
- Lots of observation needed as the charger kids were never in school so research could not be gathered
- Piloted - iron out any problems before his undertaking his research
- Ethical Approach - how was it ethical and how wasn't it
- 'Vestenien' - Waberian word, means looking at the research from their point of view.
- Reflectivity - He is observing but his data is reflective of his own perceptions of what he is seeing, so it might be bias.
- Conclusion - Just state what Nayak found.
Hope this helps, just what i've got so far.
Anyone else got any ideas, anything i might of missed worth mentioning?

I think the Q4 is about analysis Ethnographies in researching the experiences of young working class men.
Oh well not "I think". It's from my teacher's Easter homework for us.

Hey,

This is how my teacher said we should structure question 4:

- Methods
- Theories
- Strengths
- Weaknesses
- Justifications
- Alternatives
- Conclusion

If you need any more detail on any of these then I can help
Did you take this exam in January then? I did and got a D so I'm retaking :/

Yeah I think AO1 is the same but A02 changes depending on the question. I haven't done much work on the new pre-release so I'm not really sure

Hi,

You would write about:

- What was the theoretical viewpoint in the study used? Positivism/Interpretivism
- Describe this theoretical viewpoint in detail
- What are this theories main concerns with research methods?
- Why does this theory like the method used?
