What does it mean if a university is NOT in UCAS Extra?

Obviously, all the 'elite' universities like Oxbridge have very few places, if any.

However, some good universities have some places such as the University of Leicester.

But, the University of Exeter does not have any places whatsoever. Does that mean they are fully over subscribed? Or have they just not updated UCAS Extra with any places they may have?

Also, say for Exeter, does this mean that you are definitely less likely to be allowed in if you miss a grade or so?
Not in Extra = no places left, that's all. Unis get oversubscribed because they're seen as 'elite', or because they're very popular, or because they are small, or because they give fewer offers per place. Exeter is in a nice place, and is a good uni, so it isn't surprising that it's popular, I suppose. Also, some unis go into Extra without having many/any places, and only make Extra offers to international students.

It could mean you're more likely to be let in, because they have fewer offers per place. Who knows? Probably best to try to get your grades!

It means that Exeter reckons that they already have enough applications to be able to make the number of offers they want to. It could be that in a few weeks, in a small number of courses, they decide they could take a few more applications, but it seems unlikely.

As to the chances of getting in if you miss your offer, this depends on the uni/course and how well other people have done. Whether or not the course was in Extra doesn't change this. If Exeter's places get filled up by people who have met their offers (don't forget there will be some people who will have Exeter as their insurance and will need to use it) then you'd be out of luck.

So the message is, don't miss your offer!
