Dentistry -rejected

hey I recently got my last rejection and therefore hold no offers for dentistry but 2 for biomedical sciences.
The reason I think for being rejected is my AS grades (ABBC) which I have re-took and are currently pending.
I still am adamant to read dentistry and want to know any future course of route I could take.

I know you can apply as a postgrad from biomedical but any more detail on this from anyone with advice or experience is appreciated.
Furthermore, If I got my grades and they were exceptional could I apply through clearing?
Or even just re-apply next year?

Thanks!

I'm not an expert on graduate entry into dentistry but from what I've heard its really really competitive! Even more so than getting in through the undergraduate route.

If I were you, I would do my best to get the 3A's or more this year, take a gap year and reapply. In the gap year, get loads more experience and try and get involved in youth groups/other extracurricular activities to add to your involvement in the community.

Places in clearing are really rare, but they do come up sometimes (very rarely)

Good luck
What I said to someone in your position earlier....

sorry to hear

On the plus side, there is a lot you can do in a gap year...

Firstly, don't let the rejections put your spirits down - competition is really tough so just because you didn't get in does NOT in any way mean you are not good enough. When I got rejections last year it was a really difficult time, so I can completely understand how you feel. Don't worry, you're not the only one. Continue to work hard, and get AAA if not more, then re-apply.

Some of my friends wanting to do med took a gap year, and they all have med offers now.

Do more work experience, go travelling (my friends went to places like China and Fiji), and have fun. Do more voluntary work and improve your application. Practice more for the UKCAT (yes, that stupid test again.. but if you do well, you'll be in a good position).

There's plenty of people who take gap years ... in fact, someone I spoke to from Kings said most of his classmates are gap year students.

Postgrad is harder and more competitive, so in my opinion it's best to take a gap year.

Also, I highly doubt there will be any dentistry places in clearing.

Good luck

Thank guys really appreciate the advice.
it is heard of though of some people switching after there first year of biomedical sciences into medicine or dentistry though? (despite universities insisting it isn't)
Where did you apply? I have got worse AS results than you and got an interview from cardiff and rejections from dundee and newcastle still waiting on sheffield.

They should rename Biomedical Science as "Access to Medicine/Dentistry" as absolutely no-one does it because they generally like Biomedical Science and wants to be a Biomedical Scientist (whatever they may do) but because they are medicine/dentistry rejects who want another way in.

Well that is definitely the most ignorant thing I have seen posted on the Dentistry forum for quite some time! Well done my friend.

I looked at your profile and I see that you are a Biomedical Science grad who is applying for Dentistry. So your whole life has just backed up what I said. I think it's highly unlikely that you just thought "hey i'm bored of biomed lets give dentistry a try" but rather you wanted to be a dentist all along but didn't get the grades/got rejected so did biomed to get in. Don't lie.

So? What is your problem with it?

Your original comment was unfounded as practically every university inEngland has a biomedical programme. Therefore to assume all these students want to go into medicine or dentistry is an ignorant thing to say. Realistically most biomed graduates want a career in science or the NHS, but do not know what specialism.

What's wrong with doing Biomedical Science as a back up? I think that you should concentrate on your Chemistry and not get so wound up about Biomedical Science. If someone chooses to do Biomedical Science with the intention of wanting to do Dentistry, and still wishes to do it after 3 years of UG study, that shows commitment and some universities prefer those types of students e.g. Newcastle.

Moose Biscuit actually did a BSc in Biology and MSc in Biomedical Science (look up the difference) and spent 8 years working as a Biomedical Scientist. She probably fancied a career change, not that it's any of your business.

Having done a Biomedical Science degree myself, I can safely say that your original post in this thread is a load of poo. Approximately 15-20% (from a cohort of 150) applied for Medicine and Dentistry, the remaining chunk have gone on to specialise in a field of interest on a Masters or PhD programme, whilst others have gone into teaching, clinical trials, banking, medical sales, HR etc.

Most employers have any degree as a requirement these days anyway.

Are you actually trying to sound more idiotic with every post? If you look properly at my profile, you will see that my age is 30. I graduated over 8yrs ago, and with a degree in BIOLOGY not biomed. I actually went to the effort of doing an MSc so that I could work as a Biomedical Scientist. Up until now, I have been working in the NHS as a Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology, and have loved every minute.
So, anything else to add? I'd really love to see if you can make yourself seem to be any more unintelligent and ignorant.
