Paramedic Practice/Science-2012 Entry

Good Afternoon All,

Just wondered how everyone is getting on / getting ready for this years application for Paramedics. I applied to LJMU, Coventry, Staffordshire and UWE last year and received an interview at each. I also applied to SHU and didn't get an interview. Sadly I got no offers last year but plenty of feedback to help me this year.

I am applying this year to:

Liverpool John Moores
Coventry
UWE
Birmingham City University
Oxford Brookes University

Swansea (Not through UCAS so an additional choice)

How about you?

I am also considering Paramedic Science for 2012 entry. However the universities which you say you're applying for..... I guess you're planning on doing the foundation degree, yeah? I would only want to do the full BSc degree I think?

What work experience have you got?

I think you need to remember that regardless of whether you're doing a BSc or FdSc course there's no difference in employment between the two. Upon completion you're eligible for registration with the HPC as a qualified paramedic (the exact same level). I believe that after completing the FdSc course at some universities they give you the option of topping it up to BSc.

Yeah that's true, you can top it up after you've done the FdSc. However, you are a lot more likely to get employment if you have got the full degree. For example, if two newly qualified paramedics go for a job, one with a FdSc and one with BSc, who is more likely to be employed?!

Have you managed to get any work experience? Also what are you doing at college at the moment?

I'm not fussy what level I get to be honest. I will be more than happy to do either BSc or FdSc, and if it was an FdSc I would be more than happy to top it up. As mentioned you can still register with the HPC after course which is either FdSc or BSc.

As for work experiance I have been in St John Ambulance since the age of 5. I am now running a Badger Sett and also assisting within a Cadet Division. Have undertook a number of operational duties including the London Marathon. I have also undertook a work placement at a local disabilities school where I undertook 2 years worth of care work, specialising in Occupational Therapy. At the moment I am applying at a number of hospitals for Nursing Auxiallary work.

Wooow sounds like you have got a lot of experience lined up then :-).
I see where you're coming from, I guess either the FdSc or BSc are successful. I am unsure where to apply as well!

I am also a member of St John Ambulance. I have also undertaken work experience in a minor injuries unit for a week and also an elderly peoples ward at a hospital.

Are you doing A Levels? If so, what subjects?

There are advantages and disadvantages for both FdSc and BSc, an employer won't rule out a candidate just because of the type of degree they hold - if you are registered with the HPC as a paramedic, then you're fully qualified and as academically employable as any other newly qualified paramedic.

I got an offer to study paramedic science starting this September, my experiences included volunteering on a ward, observing in theatre, reading mentor for children with learning difficulties, St John Ambulance amongst other things.

If you need any help or any questions then feel free to PM me

Oh I see, that's great!
I've just found out BCU is not doing applications through UCAS this year. So that means I get seven choices! So the final ones are...

Liverpool John Moores
Coventry
UWE
Worcester
Oxford Brookes University

Birmingham City University (Not through UCAS so an additional choice)
Swansea (Not through UCAS so an additional choice)

The one that impresses at interview and the one with the best practice evaluations , i.e. the one who is going to be the least 'risk' out on the road ... and isn't going to plunge into situations feet first full of book smarts and short on 'street' medic ability ...

If you were talking about a team leader role or a CTE/ FBA role it's going to be the one with most recent study - a 'stale' pre -reg Bachelors is going to be less favourably viewed that a fresh bachelors as top -up including supporting learners in practice or that 'stale' bachelors with a Supporting learners in practice or someone with the FdSc/ DipHE and a fresh Supporting learners in practice award ...

How do you apply when not applying through UCAS?

You need to contact the university and relevant faculty and ask for an application form.

Hi all!

I'll be applying to study Paramedic Science at:

BCU
Staffs
Coventry

(Only 3 choices because I have recently bought a house, so am limited to where I can travel etc)

I've got my place to study Access to HE Health & Social Care at college in September. Am really looking forward to it!

As far as experience goes...
I've only just started at St John, but am really enjoying it! I'm also currently an RAFVR(T) Pilot Officer in the Air Training Corps, been doing that for 10 years now. I've started to work with the first aid officer for the region recently, so am developing training programmes etc. I've also done some mountain leadership type qualifications, which were pretty emergency first aid / care in places. I was also a door supervisor at a gig venue in Birmingham for a couple of years, which was... interesting!

Right now (only for 20 more working days!!) I'm a European Quality manager for a global telecoms company. I can do it, but I find it extremely dull, hence the reason for my complete life change!

Just started my fitness training recently, so that hopefully when it comes to uni fitness tests, it'll be a walk in the park! Here's hoping...

Thankyou! (Though I'm female... but hey ho!)

I'll be finishing my personal statement (only about 100 drafts so far!!) in the next few weeks, but God knows if I'm supposed to apply to Birmingham via application or UCAS. I guess doing both couldn't hurt...!

Went to my college enrollment day yesterday, it's all becoming very real now. That and the fact I'm leaving my well paid job in 4 days!

WannabeParamedic - how far are you along the process?
