Hi everyone.
I am having difficulties with choosing A LEVELS.
I am 100% sure I am going to do Business Studies and also thinking of choosing maths
Can anyone tell me the different between Mathematics and Further Mathematics and can I
do them both at the same time?

Thank You )

I see, so you can get a single degree for PPE? Is it three times the work?

Nope. Same amount of work, just from three different subjects. You can specialise in different ones though.

Philosophy, politics and economics. It's a really popular course at Oxford and similar universities. Never mind, your A levels just looked like you would want to apply for it because you had pretty much all of those, bar politics; although History suffices for that.

Reason why is because a lot of people usually take those subjects specifically aimed at PPE, when you in fact don't need them. I.e., for PPE philosophy, economics or politics A level is definately not required, but most people have atleast one of them. I would have economics but History is seen as being more important, and has more applications than econ. Particularly when I don't want to study straight econ and don't have further maths (to atleast AS for top unis)) for that anyway lol.

Sounds interesting, I am relatively interested in politics (not sure if I would want to take it for A-Level though) so that could be a good direction to look towards.

Replace History with Economics and we would be identical :biggrin:

I was going to take economics at a different sixth form that I applied to but I got rejected - they give priority to 'in-area' applicants and I was out of area. :frown: My school doesn't do economics so history was the next best.

Thanks, this is really useful, especially as I'm doing AQA :smile: I've bought a copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in French - its sitting on my bookshelf waiting for the exam season to be over so I can find time to read it :colondollar:

That's the one I started with! (Looking back I don't quite know why? I think I just picked it up in a Paris bookshop)

Drop business studies and choose a proper subject like physics or chemistry. Further maths is just more maths, it's generally considered harder for most people. Yes you can do both at the same time. Honestly, we can't give you advice if you don't tell us what you want to do at uni.

Well I am not really good at science, the only one that I find easy is probably chemistry, but in physics and biology I hardly get a C, had to work a lot towards it

In future I want to do Accountancy or Actuary ..either one of those however till I finish my A Levels I could change my mind..
I definitely want my future job to involve maths, because I enjoy it..
So I was thinking of choosing Mathematics,Further Mathematics and Business Studies
So can you advise what A Levels to do , which will help me in my future
Would be very appreciated for any help ))

Doesn't sound like a great language college tbh mate. My school's just a normal school and it offers japanese, chinese, polish, russian, swahili, spanish, french, german, italian, latin, greek, arabic and something else I can't quite remember...

edit: oh, portugese.

yeah I am aware that it is not great.... :frown: really wanted to study an "exotic" language to A level but wasn't even allowed to continue Chinese past GCSE level :frown:

The difference between maths and further maths is that further maths is more advanced, covering more content than normal maths. They are two separate A levels and can both be done at the same time, however most schools teach the whole maths A level in Year 12 then further maths in Year 13, so if you pick further expect a fast pace and a heavy weighting of exams in maths (6 in the Year 12, another 6 in Year 13). By no means let that put you off, further is very interesting and rewarding.
Doing Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Biology and Geography.

But I've done my AS maths this year, and got an A in C1, just done C2 and S1 and hoping to get an A overall so I can do A2 next year :smile:

I've done ICT AS this year as well, but I hated it, got a D in one unit in January. Ooops. XD

I'm thinking of doing History, English Lit, Economics and Chemistry/Politics. Might try and self teach myself Psychology if the syllabus is quite easy.
Seems like Maths is a very popular subject throughout TSR.
I absolutely suck at Maths and had to work my ass off at GCSE to even try and scrape an A. I want to study Law at KCL or Nottingham and I heard essay subjects are good hench English Lit and History. PLUS I love the subject. So win-win for me.

You can do Maths and Further Maths at the same time, I myself will be doing it in September. Therefore 10 lessons of Maths per week. Most colleges/sixth forms arrange the modules so you do the regular Maths in the first year, then further maths in the second. So basically;

January = AS Maths
June = A2 Maths
2nd Year January = AS Further Maths
2nd Year June = A2 Further Maths

The difference between Maths and Further Maths is the modules you do. You can do Mechanics & Statistics & Further Pure etc. With Further you do more modules obviously. Hence why you need a higher GCSE Maths grade to do Further than the regular Maths.

I believe Further Maths is massivley beneficial if you wish to do Physics (like myself) or planning on dong Maths at Uni. With regular Maths I heard you do the Statistics Modules instead of Mechanics Modules if you have not taken Physics. I could be wrong but that's what my college said. Obviously you do both in Further Maths.
