Americamp 2012!! :)

Yeah I agree with you there, a person definitely needs to hold some independence if they're going to take on a position that basically relies on you being independent...

And placed at CECBR for Summer 2012! As a specialist counselor for video classes!

Awesome, CEBCR is amazing - I was climbing staff last year, general counsellor this year, can't wait for camp (And the road trip after!)

Heya, i'm thinking of doing Americamp next year and wondered how people found them when it comes to support? i've looked at Bunac and Americamp and the only thing that's putting me off Americamp slightly is the arrange your own flights (I did read this thread and saw the comments about being independant and booking your own flights :colondollar: ) I'd be travelling by myself and Bunac say that they sort flights for you and put you on flights with other people also travelling so you get to meet up and fly to America together which i think would be quite nice.
With Americamp do they arrange for you to meet up with other people before you go or is it just a case of they give you the dates and info for what camp you're at and you book your tickets and go? and do they help you with any problems you might have when it comes to booking tickets etc?
I know that as you get to sort your own flights people will be going to different airports or whatever but i'd like the opportunity to try and meet people who are also going out
Sorry for the big essay,i know i'm not planning til next year but every bit of info helps!!

Hey,

Americamp is incredibly useful with support I've found, if I've ever got a problem I can either Facebook, Skype or Call them and get a response almost instantly.

Although Americamp don't get involved with the booking of flights you'll meet other Americampers at the orientation day they offer and can arrange with others to book flights together (You'll also most likely find a FB Group for your camp where people often try and book flights together)

Overall, it's not really a huge issue if you can't get on the same flights as others, I've flown in / out of America quite a few times on my own due to studying abroad & Americamp and never had any issues. (It's best to try and sleep on the plane anyway to counter jetlag imo)

I went through Americamp for this summer, I have been placed in Connecticut at Camp Awosting... Americamp were very good and helpful, no complaints at all! They also charge a lot less than other agencies! The next cheapest is a good £250-300 more!
Anyone else in Connecticut this summer???? Also, is anyone travelling after camp?

Hi I was wondering if anyone had some advice for me on how this works because I'm quite confused!!! I only applied yesterday (late I know) but have had a skype 'interview' with Chris from Americamp, he asked me a few questions, gave me some tips on adding stuff to my CV and that was basically it. I was just wondering does this count as your formal interview and should I just sit tight and wait to hear if they have sent my application to camps to look at? Also, would you say it is necessary to do the youtube video or will I be ok without one? I am proper stressing out cos now I have applied and really thought about it I want to go sooooooo bad! and I will be a qualified teacher next year so this is kind of my last chance :frown:.

Any advice and words of support much appreciated
Hey there! Sorry haven't checked this in a while... Anyway it's slightly confusing the way Americamp works. But it's roughly in this order:
1.Interview
2. Americamp sends out your details to camps in America, then theres a chance one might get back to them and they in turn will get back to you
3. They'll hold one of their virtual fairs (I think they're roughly in monthly intervals or so - so roughly one every month or so) and you'll be invited to attend, you might want read a few posts back on this thread and there should be an explanation that I've written of what the fairs actually are.
4. Providing you attend the fair you might be shortlisted, placed or contacted by Americamp or directly by a camp.

Hope that roughly helps! Unfortunately it's just a waiting game

Woohoo just got a placement via email . How long do I have before I accept/reject their employment?
Awesome congrats, where have you been placed? I basically accepted immediately, after you accept you have like a week or so to pay Americamp the £179 or whatever it is!

Eagle springs - so excited! Yeah in the email I received it says I need to pay within 7 days. Actually I think I may get a tenner off because of the screw up at the virtual fair.

Basically the start date clashes with a maths exam I have, so I'm wondering how flexible they'll be if I want to arrive a few days late...
Oh wow just looked it up, it's a special needs camp right? Anyway I got a tenner off when I paid, Jonny or someone will probably ring you up to confirm all the details and then he'll be like you've gotta pay the £179 fee' or something and you just say 'aren't I supposed to get a tenner off' - just to remind them.

Oh and my suggestion for the dates is to speak directly to the camp, have you been in direct contact with them already (through email etc)? I'd just drop them an email if I were you and explain to them because at the end of the day, they make the decisions about dates not Americamp.

Yeah haha. Which camp are you going to?

Ijust spoke called Americamp and they said they'll ask the camp directly if they can push back my enrollment day by a few days - if they come back with bad news I'll ask the camp myself!
I'm going to Camp Equinunk & Blue Ridge (it's a "brother&sister" camp) in PA, good luck with getting your dates pushed back a few days, I'm sure they'll be fine with it, you'll probs just miss a few days of the orientation.

Yeah I just called them about 5 minutes ago and they were completely fine with it - she just said that I'd have a very 'condensed' orientation.

Woooohooooooooooo!
Awesome! What are you gonna be teaching when youre there?

Just a general camp counsellor, you?
I'll be teaching video! Btw if you've got any questions about the visa process and CRB feel free to ask, although I think the deal with the criminal check might be slightly different for your visa application because they changed the system just after I'd got my visa so I wasn't affected.. but anyway, any questions i'll try to answer!

Oh and are you gonna be going to an Americamp orientation soon?
