Hey, sorry for taking so long to get back to you, totally new to TSR, I wish they emailed you when you get quoted - though that'd just give me more reasons to jump when I get emails, thinking it's UCAS :')

Good luck with your application too! Sheffield technically do 'English Language and Linguistics' but I went to the open day and it is literally pure Linguistics, the difference is in name only, the modules are the same I've seen everywhere else. Results-wise, I've been very lucky, I got 9 A*s and a short-course A at GCSE and 5 As at AS  I'm just freaking out over the SAQ right now! How's your application going?

hey yeah same thing, didnt check tsr for a while
wow your results are amazing!
i sent ucas off on friday! final choices are - edinburgh, leeds, ucl, york and manchester
i wish more places did linguistics, i dont even want to go to ucl/york/manchester but had to apply because next to nowhere does it :frown:
anywayyy, good luck and keep us up to date on your application status! i'm sooo nervousss!!!!

Just sent my application off for linguistics (and variations thereon).

Really hoping for a QMUL offer!

birmingham do linguistics?!?!?!?!?!

I applied for three pure Linguistics courses because I'm sure that I want to go into further study after my degree. The other two are German/Linguistics, so if I don't get where I want to, I suppose I'll end up a bit more useful. :P

I mean I totally agree with you, just because I still haven't sent off my application and therefore it is still possible for me to change my current choices. Have you sent yours off yet? I got an AAA prediction, do you think UCL and Lancaster are slightly impossible for me to get in?

Not in name, no. They do English Language, but a lot of modules are those that you'd do in a linguistics degree (E.G Phonology, lexis, grammar, discourse, linguistic features and theories, and research studies). Obviously you wouldn't study the bilingual side or the language in other cultures, but I've never been to bothered about those.

I found that a lot of universities either offered English Language OR Linguistics but rarely both, unless it was a joint degree, because the courses are so similar. Manchester is the only anomaly that I could find, so I applied to both English Language and Linguistics as separate courses there, because it's such a lovely uni

I sent mine off a couple of weeks ago (Cambridge :frown:). I think UCL would carefully consider your application even if it were only for your grades! It states that this year their standard offers are between AAA-ABB, and you're at the high end of that. I'd definitely apply there if I were you. (I did )

I know someone who does English Literature & Linguistics at Leeds and she absolutely loves the Linguistics side! She almost changed to pure Ling. Apparently the teaching is amazing. Good luck with your application

I can apply to two more universities this year, but I'm not sure where I want to go... do you guys have any suggestions/opinions?

Basically I'd like to do a pure Linguistics degree, but with the option to switch in second year to another related course if I'm not too fond of they way it is structured. So I was looking at York -- the linguistics-and-languages options sound really good! -- and SOAS, as well as Newcastle. What are your thoughts on these universities? SOAS in particular has an incredible number of language options, but I don't know if I am suited to that kind of environment, and York only offers European languages not from scratch, and I'm not keen on continuing with French. (which is a problem, as most of these language+linguistics degrees only accept post-A Level students...) Newcastle has interesting options as well.

I guess that my question is mostly... what made you choose the universities you picked?

Have you been to ling talks at open days for these unis? I found it really helped in narrowing it down

Here are some biased opinions (!) :
I had not originally planned to apply to York, but I went to the open day and really liked it! For me, it looks great there! The linguistics course seems to have a great mixture of things and the head of the department was really really friendly! Also, they have an amazing extra-language learning programme - they offer a lot of other languages that you can take as part of your degree or just extra-curricularly from ab initio up to a high level, it's called "Languages for all" and it sold York to me basically! http://www.york.ac.uk/inst/ltc/lfa/

I loved Newcastle as a city however the linguistics course seemed a bit too Englang-y for me, but I could be completely wrong. I've also heard some people saying there is a bit of a drinking culture there, moreso than other unis, but that may suit some people! Also, their pastoral care is not rated highly by my head of sixth form. But these are just opinions and rumours, so I wouldn't take them too seriously. Newcastle have amazing extra-language facilities also, with a big centre where they have a lot of facilities like foreign tv channels, various courses etc.

For me, I didn't want to be in London for uni (annoyingly as the UCL course looks better than sliced bread!) but that isn't a consideration for you:smile: SOAS do have amazing languages on offer and it seems like an amazingly quirky uni. That's all I have to say as I haven't really looked into SOAS enough, so it would just be guessing.

What course would you think of changing onto as that might narrow it down?

Don't listen to me though! I don't want to influence you in the wrong direction, these are just my personal feelings.

Oh, thank you so much, that was so incredibly helpful! I'm glad you told me about Newcastle's drinking culture, because I really wouldn't like that; I'm not suited to that kind of undergrad experience. I am kind of at loss-- I think that I'll enjoy it anywhere, I think, but I can't decide-- online prospecti are only helpful to a certain point, you know? And I can't go to any open days, as I do not live in the UK. :frown: So I'm grateful that you spoke a bit about your opinions. I like the look of York! I didn't think I'd want to study at a very large university, and that's why I crossed off Manchester, but what do you think about it? I'm glad you got an offer from them! And, just to know, was your PS pretty focused on French as well as linguistics, or did you get an offer with a linguistics-focused PS...? /at a loss

I applied to Homerton College, Cambridge, UCL, Newcastle, QMUL, and Southampton. And just this morning I received a questionnaire from UCL! It looks great. It asks some questions about your take on the study of language and then gives you some grammar exercises. Fun stuff.

But other than completing the SAQ for Cambridge and recently getting that questionnaire, I also got a little postcard saying 'thank you for applying' from Southampton. Cute

Is it really? It's quite difficult word well! But the opportunity to go off on one about why I love language is not to be missed. It's fun to show what you're capable of, you know?

And, re. your second post: my application was sent off by my school almost three weeks ago! NO OFFERS YET. I want to die. I'm so impatient. :colondollar:
Heya!
Just found this post! So good to have so many linguistics applicants in one place!

Oh and I just received the questionnaire from UCL - the first part is alright but the grammar exercise is impossible!

yeah, i'd love to speak more about why i love language! so what exactly is the structure of this questionnaire? is it like a general knowledge section, then actual grammar exercises?? i'm so scared! i don't do english language at a-level so i'm worried i'll be disadvantaged :'(

well the questionnaire is one step closer to an offer! I'M SO SCARED. arghhhhhhhhhhhh.:crossedf:
