The highest earning hedge fund manager received $3.9 billion last year... holy s**t

Wow just read this article on the highest paid fund managers - im not sure what i can think about this other than holy s**t 3.5 BILLION dollars... BILLION - i am jealous hehe :P although a lot of time and effort no doubt goes into the running of a huge fund it would seem to me when you have 120 billion to invest in markets the amount of money you 'invest' would shift market prices up due to the simply huge numbers involved - either way amazing

It's the ultimate form of trickle-up economics. They do a better job of redistributing wealth from poor to rich than casinos do. They bet on commodities like grain which affect poor Africans and farmers in third world countries as the price of food fluctuates drastically and people starve but they do it anyway because they make billions doing it.

I didn't really follow the news when that was in the news and I still heard quite a bit about it.
3.9 billion won't save the fella from being an absolute prick.

Then you should pay more attention, because he was all over the news.

And fellow Jew Jon Stewart ripped him one or two new ones IIRC.

I've always been interested in what hedge funds do? I know it's on Wikipedia, but could you give me a brief, simple outline of what they do? Or is what you've stated above the core? They bet on commodities to go up or down, and make fortunes/losses on that?

they invest?

they take people's money, put it all together, then invest using their strategy. They make profit, charge a percentage to the clients, rest is clients' profit.
thats how it works (or i think)

Yeah, This kinds of profit within hedge fund businesses aren't really unheard of. They make obscene amount of money relative to their work.

Wonder how much of that money came from short selling companies??

Are you joking? LOL. Every news channel spoke about him almost every day for years, and he still pops up occasionally. Not only that but there were at least half a dozen special programs where they went around and interviewed everyone he conned.

Here is just one:
