I got a Merit 125/150. I was really happy with it  Teory I got 82/100- also Merit, which was a miracle because I slaved over that thing and hadn't a clue what I was doing.

Yeah, I kinda thought the same. Until I reached the holidays and don't want to do independant revision at all!

I wouldn't worry about practising singing at this point. I had 30 minutes a week for grade 5 and I probably didn't practise outside of my lesson until 2 weeks before the exam. I wouldn't advise that but 3 months is just going to leave you bored with your pieces and you actually grow blind to any mistakes, and how you can improve etc. Obviously keep singing but don't particularly concentrate on your exam pieces.

Hm I wish I was able to see the good side of the 'bad habit' we all have with practice schedules. My flute teacher made me practice my exam pieces only for an entire year cause it was my last grade, was awful. Neglect assumed its course. Still, I could play them in my sleep at the end... so for some, it might be good? Btw it's good to see you here (from intros), left this thread for almost a year... wow the time ^^

Woooo end of year 10! It's crazy how fast this year has flown by and now we only have one year left of school. Going to spend my summer sleeping and socialising before the hard work kicks in. I want to try and get some work experience but have absolutely no idea where to start since my school hasn't even discussed the idea of it. Any advice?

Woot woot!
So much has happened this year haha... I'm personally looking to civilise myself this summer and actually read some classics I bought and used to wipe the dust from my bookshelf.

For work experience I think the best thing to do is take what you can. At this age it doesn't really matter where it is. Although ofc if you have preferences and hobbies go for it. Stuff like the Summer Reading Challenge and animal shelters/ charity shops are pretty popular. So's tuition, local shops or wherever your parents work: having said this I haven't got work exp either atm ^^ decided it would be more preferable to do work placement in Y11 instead (cause I found this awesome place in Oxford, the RAL, which is a research lab that takes in students for physics/ engineering)
I'll be starting my first work experience placement tomorrow morning. I'm really excited but also a bit nervous - wish me luck!
hey there  im in yr 11 transferring to 12, in September , basically i kinda flopped my gcses because it was a really bad year for me so i want to spend one more yr retaking gcses but as you know my spec has changed can someone please thouroughly explain the changes for me, apart from the fact that your graded 1-9 what subjects have changed ? and what will the exams be like? what subjects are still the same? what subjects are offered? how does science work can i still do extension sci? thanks alot xx

Good Luck with your work experience! As long as you are proactive and enthusiastic you will enjoy your placement very much!

You will still be able to retake everything except Maths and English, on the old spec. English and Maths have changed their specs to 9-1, as kind of a test by Ofqual, I guess.

Maths

Specification covers harder topics.

If you're taking foundation, you're going to see a lot of stuff that has crept in from Higher.

If you're on Edexcel [not sure about the others], you'll now be doing 3 exams out of 80 marks, instead of 2 exams out of 100. Two calculator, 1 non-calculator.

English

No coursework.

No copy of the anthology in the poetry part of the exam.

Not sure if anything else has changed with English, wasn't too familiar with the old spec.

Yeah, I would look on Ofqual's website for more info and the exam boards.

For our year, all the subjects are the same except Maths and English.

Basically, Maths is much harder than it used to be. However, it's not really the content that gets harder, it's how the exam questions ask you to "think mathematically" rather than just "doing maths" - much more like A-Level. Also, they don't give you formulae at the front of the exam papers - you have to memorise them all yourself. There's also no more coursework.

English has also got harder but I don't find it too bad. There's no coursework for a start (which I know many people hated with GCSE English before). The main difference is that the english lit exams are all closed book - you cannot have a copy of the book, play and poetry anthology in the exams with you.

Yeah Maths is significantly harder IMO with some of the topics from A Level coming down to GCSE level which is making it more challenging and if you like, more vigorous and demanding. English isn't too bad but I'm not keen on the idea of close book.
Adding on to what JTran said, the topics that are new are:

Sketching and transforming functions.

Inequalities, maybe including quadratic inequalities.

Sketching trigonometric functions, including knowing the exact values of sin/cos/tan 30, 45, 60, 70 and [90 - cannot be calculated with tan] (fun!)

Turning points of a graph

Intercepts within a graph

If you're taking foundation, there's a lot inbound that was previously only in higher. (list)

The good side is...you have more time to um study play games Actually once I can play my pieces ok I enjoy practising them. But scales is another story....and don't even start on sight reading!
I worked out for grade 5 I had in the range of 110-130 (can't remember exactly now) different scales
I've been practising my pieces since January 2015 now but that's because my teacher thought I'd do my theory a lot quicker but because of other commitments I couldn't make the date and she thought more practise would be useful so I only passed it in March (and then I couldn't do the exam this term because of the risk of it falling over exams which hadn't been dated at that point) so I'm doing it next term.

At a veterinary hospital near me. I had a great, but tiring, day yesterday. I watched operations, x-rays, consultations and just generally helped around

Which grade are you taking? And what was your practise schedule? I mean, I have Grade 6 piano practical in November and haven't learnt even one of my pieces to a good standard yet, should I be worried? And yeah there are so many scales!!!

Same as you, grade 6 piano practical in November/December. My practise schedule is currently play them through now and again, not good I know but I really struggle to make myself do much more :frown: I haven't learnt even one of my pieces to a good standard either so if it's worrying then I'll join the club! Diminished sevenths scales will be the death of me! My pieces generally have the notes right but the rhythm is sometimes off and the speed is way too slow. I also haven't put the pedal in yet :frown: Which pieces are you doing for your A, B and C piece?
