The Student Room Group

The Territorial Army (Brighton)

Hi everyone.

I'm looking for infomation regarding the T.A unit in Brighton.
Does any one from Brighton or Sussex uni belong to this unit.

If so, what do you think of the unit?
Is well established.
Are the CO's good leaders, what about the NCOs and the lads in general are they a good bunch, do you socialise with one another?

If their are no students in the Brighton unit, what about across the country, what has everyones impression been regarding being a student and a part-time soldier, are the two rougthly compatible?

Can anyone help?

I went to a military college before uni, and wish to continue my involvment with the services, and eventually become an a commisioned M.P.
Sussex uni only has a Navy section for officer training, so I'm considering the T.A while I study.
I just want to know what other people got form their experiences.

Your best bet is to ring them up to get any information you require about them.

I am in the OTC and have had some good times. From what i hear, there are quite a few students in the 'proper' TA (as opposed to the drinking club that is the OTC!). Now that i am finishing my degree, i am looking to transfer to my local TA unit which is A Coy 3 PWRR which has a detachment in Brighton. From what i have experienced previously, they are a good bunch.

Hope this helps!

Oh oh. Without losing the humour attached to your post, you know that statistically the gayest force of the lot is the Army. Enjoy.

Im going to brighton university, and will be looking to join the URNU. Although my priority is to become a RAF Officer, I think it will still offer valuable insights into military operations, leadership etc....

If you find that it is hard to fit the TA in with studying, might still be worth considering the URNU?

Why would it be hard to fit the TA in? I do it fine, and I do a decent degree at a decent uni.

Not saying that it will be, I was merely saying that if it was difficicult then URNU would still ofer a great way to explore being in military.

Brighton University (and Sussex University) are planning to open an outstation of the Officer Training Corps in Brighton.

One night a week in Brighton and weekends and/or camps and courses with an Officer Training Corps (probably Southampton).

Hope to see some of you there.

As said above there is a pretty firm plan for Brighton Uni to open an OTC detachment next year.

The rough idea at the moment is that it is going to be based in the local PWRR Infantry unit and students will officially belong to the PWRR. However they will be attached for training to Southampton OTC.

There are lots of details still to be worked on, but from what I have heard the rough idea is that there will be training one weekday night a week with PWRR but as a separate platoon of students, and then at weekends they will join SUOTC for the normal OTC training weekends.

For more info I would get in touch with SUOTC over the Summer who will know if all the details have been sorted and the scheme can run from this year.

Otherwise there is nothing to stop a student joing the local TA unit and many do so and have great fun. As with all TA units including OTCs how good they are to a large extent depends on who the staff are at a particular time. The best way to find out is to go along and see. If you are looking at a normal TA unit then they normally have open evening for new recruits every month and a quick phone call will get you all the details. Recruiting is on an ongoing basis with recruit courses run centrally every couple of months.

As a student you have an exemption from being mobilised- so no worries there. You will also get a bigger bounty than OTC students .

PM me for more info if you want.

Don't join Brighton, unless you like carrying lots of heavy kit acropss training areas and then not even using it when you get to the other end.

And travelling from Brighton to Soton is an absolute mission!

Hey,
Did Brighton or Sussex open an UOTC detachement? I'm going to Sussex next year and can't find info about one? Cheers

Seriously - if you drag up a nearly 5 year old answer to a nearly 6 year old question instead of finding this:

you might want to brush up on your initiative skills!

If he is in the TA how will they know he is in the military, a TA solider usually joins a unit local to where he lives and doesn't usually carry an Armed Forces ID.

Officially it is illegal for clubs and pubs to discriminate against the military already, however pubs and clubs are private property and staff can admit or refuse anyone they like with all manner of reasons that will easily hold up under any investigation.

Half the time its the unit or garrison hierarchy themselves that impose bans on selected watering holes. The places that don't typically allow squaddies in are all the more novel when we manage to worm our way in, its not that much of an issue, i just go spend my beer tokens somewhere else.

As far as I know the OTC link up in Brighton never really got off the ground. However the best thing is to get in touch with Southampton OTC and ask directly.

If there is no OTC unit then joining the local TA unit would be a good move.
