3 New Cities Announced

It's either us or Reading who's the biggest town, don't remember which.

All the locals who're like "We're a town and we should always be a town!" annoy me. So what? It's ****.

Northampton is the 3rd largest town.

It goes Reading, Dudley (where the hell is that?) and then Northampton.

Shame, it can't even claim to be the largest town which was the only thing going for it.

If they keep announcing new cities then there won't be any towns or villages left within 20 years

The only places that should be counted as cities are

London
Glasgow
Edinburgh
Manchester
Liverpool
Newcastle
Birmingham
Leeds
Belfast
Cardiff
Londonderry
Aberdeen
Swansea
Dundee
Sheffield

Out of interest, why those 15 places for cities?

I've never heard of a place called Dudley in England until today.

IIRC there's a few benefits like extra funding.

You don't remember correctly as there is zero extra funding.

Northampton has a cathedral? I have lived in Northamptonshire for the last 15 years and I didn't know that.

It's on Barrack Road. Not a big cathedral by any means, but a cathedral none-the-less.

Dudley's bigger than Northampton? It's getting worse. :frown:

I thought Reading would get it.

Mate is from Chelmsford, he is pretty excited.. for some reason.

I wanted reading to get it to, would have been fun to be in a city at last!

and I can kind of understand why your friend is excited to be in a "new city", although i don't know why....

According to wikipedia, St Aspah has a population less than my village :lolwut:

What the heck is St Asaph???

Cities just seem much shinier and more pleasant than towns in my experience.*

*My experience of towns tends to mean Northampton and Wellingborough, which are neither shiny nor pleasant in the slightest.

Four or five years ago there was an earthquake in the UK which centred in Dudley. I live down south but still felt the ground shake a bit. I remember reading in the paper afterwards that most people hadn't heard of Dudley before the earthquake happened  Apparently Lenny Henry was born there too, though I might be remembering wrong.

What are your criteria for inclusion on the list?

Also, isn't Scotland massively over represented when the population of Scotland is about 5 5 million and the England about 50 million? Shouldn't your list be more representative of that?

Also, why exclude places like Nottingham, Bristol and Leicester?

I think us here in Doncaster (and Goole) knew that we wouldn't get it, but it's a little disappointing. I thought Reading would get it too

For those complaining about St Asaph, they chose one from Scotland, England and Wales, and so there wasn't much other competition for the Welsh one, although i'm not sure what else was on the list.

Why not Exeter, Bristol, Plymouth, Nottingham, Cambridge, Oxford, York, Coventry, Swindon etc???

How about city status for Swindon? Almost 200,000 people. This is an absolute joke.

Southampton and Brighton and Hove should be added too.
