AS Chemistry doubt

Exams are around the corner and I was flicking through the Chemistry AS revision guide when I came across this:

When electrons are shared, the situation is more stable than when there are two separate atoms (four attractive forces between positive nuclei and negative electrons instead of two).

I'm afraid I didn't quite understand that statement. I may come off as thick but I'd rather be made to look foolish for a few minutes than live in foolish ignorance. So, can anybody clarify what these four/two attractive forces are? I'll be very grateful.

Thanks in advance!

I think it's reffering to Covalent bonding, but I'm not the biggest chem whiz that's ever existed. So I'm not 100% sure.

You're actually pathetic. Grow up.

As for the question asked, I think it's reffering to Covalent bonding, but I'm not the biggest chem whiz that's ever existed. So I'm not 100% sure.

It is indeed referring to covalent bonding but what are the four/two forces it refers to? That's what's got me stumped. Anyways, thank you for getting back to me, it's the third time I'm posting this question.

it may be referring to various intermolecular forces such as van der waals, dipole dipole:confused:

Doubtful but thank you for that.
At least now I have some ideas to play with!
Perhaps it is pointing towards atoms that have two electrons on it's outermost shell, and going covalent with something that may need those makes it more stable? Just a guess, but an idea.

You have never talked to me?

Is that even a stereotype?
Anyways, do you have an answer to the question?
I'm too lazy to rack my brains for one at the moment, Physics has got me preoccupied.

Sorry, I am Sri Lankan too.
But as for your question...I reckon it's covalent bonds and maybe intermolecular forces..can't take me word for it though.
Are you doing AS?
Or its referring to a double bond.

That does seem to be bordering on veritable, let me see if I can figure it out.
A friend of mine suggested that it referred to attractions between each of the bonded nuclei and the shared pair of electrons.
I'll have to try and put the best of both together.

I guessed as much.
It is referring to covalent bonding, no doubt about that.
I found the conundrum under the heading 'Reasons for covalent bonding' or something along those lines at least.
Intermolecular forces don't sound quite right though.
Help is appreciated and yes, I'm doing AS.

Ah ok.
Hmm..I am not really sure.
What other subjects? What u wanna do for medicine?

I'm taking Biology and Mathematics apart from the aforementioned Chemistry and Physics.
What about you?
AS levels as well?

Thank you, I'm flattered!
Rest assured, if you know where to look, Abu Dhabi can be a great place to receive your education.
Where may I ask, do you reside?
Oh and what board are you following?
I'm doing Edexcel.

I live in England. I am doing Edexcel for Maths and Biology! How are you revising for the Unit 1 and unit 2?

I'm done with C1 and Unit 1 Biology, finished those in the January session.
Registered to sit Unit 2 & 3B for the sciences along with C2 and M1 this May.
Are those all the subjects you take or do you study others via a different board?

As of now, revision is making slow progress.
I have yet to finish the Chemistry, Physics and M1 syllabus, hope to have them over by Saturday.
Biology and C2 I've already dealt with.
Just need to flick through the core practicals.

How'd you do in C1 and Biology?
Ah ok, yeah I am taking chemistry and physics on different boards.

Hmmm, what are you learning for the core practicals

Managed to score 100 UMS in C1 and a high A in Biology.
I take you haven't finished either C1 or Unit 1 Biology, or have you?
My core practical knowledge is simply fueled by Mr. Biology's notes.
Not in the least perfect but they will have to do.

Ahh well done mate!
I took C1 and C2 last year..but not Unit 1 Biology. Was Biology hard?
Guessing you want to do medicine

I guess your talking about unit 2 edexcel chemistry which I will take the exam also.

I got confused in this aswell, I believe this is not required. You just need to know this.

Have you done physics unit 1 btw?

Biology?
Hard?
Not in the least, just be prepared and you'll have easy sailing ahead.
I would very much like to go into medicine but I need to be able to produce exceptional grades to do so.
