Hi

I'm doing the MRes in Clinical Psychology, although I know as little as you about the psychology department. I chose Birmingham mostly for the unique course, and while i know the psych department is well ranked, I don't know anything about what it is like to be a part of it. Will be watching this thread with interest!

I think the difference between an MRes and an MPhil is teaching. an MRes is a taught (or at least partially taught) degree, where as i think an MPhil is basically like a first year of a PhD, and so it is basically going off and doing your research, with your supervisor keeping tabs on you.

If anyone currently does the MRes in Clinical, or knows anything about the department, some views would be very welcome!

Haha, it does seem a little quiet doesn't it? . I am originally from Surrey, but I did my undergrad in Psychology at St Andrews. What about you?

Yes, please do! I would love to meet someone else on the course! I have those first year nerves of not knowing anybody, so it would be great to know someone else on the course! For accommodation I am looking at Metchley and Maison.

Not much to say really. About to Graduate from St Andrews with a BSc in Psychology. I have a particular interest in Autistic Spectrum Disorders, and have done some extra work on that subject academically and in clinical practice.

Out of academia I used to do a lot of technical production - sound/light/DJing for events. Hoping to try some new hobbies and sports at Uni. Maybe find some new ways to meet people (something I have always been terrible at!)

Psychology dept is really good here... although I would say that it has the lead researcher in diabetes and coeliac and those are my interests! The clinical Mres is headed by the diabetic researcher i work for, he is lovely! Makes you work very hard though. I know a couple of people on the clinical mres and both seem to really enjoy it. I think you get to do a term of research within the department and then you move into a more practical area... like a hospital. But it sounds like fun to me... Not really sure what questions you want answering haha, any particular ones about the department?

It's a well balanced department. Very much so, as long as you get the work done and do it to a good standard, the lecturers will want to have fun with you and treat you like a person - not just a student. I don't know anything about that course but the lecturers are good for it. Although, a lot of them are french who specialise in that area - so listen when they say their name! I always hear complaints from them about how their students can't pronounce their names right! Useful tip to get off to a good start

I'm in my third year of psych undergrad, but going straight onto a phd at birmingham in september.

From what I understand, the Msci involves you creating a project idea with the help of your supervisor and doing it... The guy I know is working with Suzanne Higgs looking and appetite and he says his week consists of conducting research and meetings with suzanne. He then has to write it all up and give various presentations throughout his degree.

In comparison, the clinical Mres allows you to do research in a hospital setting as well as a university setting in the 2nd term. So you get to make links within the hospital and do some work with patients.

I can't remember which accommodation post grads can apply for... but if you have all the options I'd either choose Elgar court - quite a few post grads were there when I lived there, or Victoria Halls just because it's so near the psych department! But if you are looking for a house then you want the Selly Oak area... post grads tend to avoid dawlish road! It's too noisy!

Not really sure about the Mphil though!

Hey Binna

Haha, join the club! I am so nervous - i'm always terrible at meeting people. I'm doing the MRes in Clinical Psych, but I imagine I will see you at the psych post grad induction thingy  . Where are you staying?

As for enrollment, I have heard of several people having problems. I got an e-mail ages ago asking me to go online with my student ID number to register, upload a photo for my ID etc (http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/welcome/registration/index.aspx). A few weeks later I got my ID card in the post. Maybe this is what you are looking for?

See you in a few weeks!

Hi! Did anyone have to go through the interview process? Could someone be kind enough to elaborate how it went (types of questions asked, and so on)?
I have mine soon and I'm very nervous!
Please help!
Thanks
