Do you know anything about the English Literature course? It's just that it looks like I'll probably end up at Sheffield (I'm waiting for a reply from Cambridge atm, but I don't have much faith in receiving an offer) and I'm not entirely sure whether, academically, it's the place for me: I'm pretty sure that it is in regards to the rest of uni life. It would be interesting to know the views of anyone you know who's studying it, as I don't want to firm a course that's poorly taught or anything like that :/ (Basically, I want insider information!)

By the way, this is a really useful thread - thank you! I'll have to think up some more questions to ask

Congrats. Yeah, don't rush into any decisions and think "CAMBRIDGE IS THE BEST!" until you've visited both and feel something for one of them. It could be right for you, since you've got the grades to apply, but if you feel it isn't then don't.

I know one person who is doing it and she loves it. She said that she did it at A-Level, and that it's just more detailed from that really. She told me that it was hard work (as is any degree!), but that you won't really get bored of it.
Also, like I said, until the end of the third week of lectures, you can change courses here, so don't worry if you secretly hate it if you come here, you can change! I know people who've dramatically changed from Philosophy to Law!
I've not heard any criticism from teaching, and if you do, the university do termly evaluations, so you can basically fill out an online evaluation (anonymous), and fill out what you love/hate, and they change things and so on accordingly.

Thanks  When I went for interview I was a little shocked by how stereotypically "snobbish" some of the professors were, and that did put me off a bit at the time. The students were all utterly lovely, though, but I guess I'll just have to see whether I get an offer or not from Cambridge now.

That sounds really good! I've already thoroughly researched the course but that's really helpful. I like the idea of termly evaluations as well.

This is completely unrelated to my last question, but I'm sure I've heard that, at Sheffield, you're given a questionnaire when you apply to live in halls so that you'll have some things in common with your flatmates. Is this true?

I think that's the same in most universities. Some professors are more conservative and ask you to call them 'Professor', whilst some just accept you calling them by their first names. (:
Yes, it is nice here, I'd definitely visit and give it a chance. It is a top 10 university for a lot of subjects, so don't knock it completely!

That is not true at all. You fill out some things in your preference e.g. Whether you want to live in a place with boys and girls or just your sex, and other things, but nothing like "Do you like ___?"

I thought that'd be a good idea, but it really wouldn't as I discovered lately. I mean, my flatmates and I are so different, e.g. we like different music, but we tell eachother about new bands, get eachother into new music, and just get along so well. If all goes pear-shaped, you can move to a new room if one is available.
I wasn't that close with my flatmates until about week 8/9. We spoke, went out etc, but now we're really good friends, so just give it a go.

My dad earns 67k a year and my mum earns 32k :frown:

Yeah, you still get funding.
You should get the £9000 automatically, and I'm not sure accommodation works this year, but for our year, the minimum you could apply for was £3500ish, so accommodation was still available in the university. I'm fortunate enough for my parents to be paying a bit, and myself the rest, hence why I went for a different room type.

No worries! I was stressed about finance. In fact, I haven't got my loan yet, delightful. Issues with finance evidence etc, because my parents can't prove they are divorcing without getting the divorce, but it's in the process of being done, drama!
Don't worry about it, although my advice would be to start saving now. Want a car for your birthday? Don't ask for one, ask for money. Cars in Sheffield are almost useless, as everything is within walking distance, and they are in most other universities. It's often cheaper to get the train, and with money, you could put it towards university accommodation/food etc (eating etc is a lot more expensive than you think), and with excess money, buy a car. If your parents don't mind, ask instead if they'll pay for some of your fees for the first year as a Christmas present. Honestly, it is stressful, but (AND TAKE NOTE ALL READING THIS LOOKING FOR ADVICE!)

PUT MONEY ASIDE. DON'T JUST RELY ON YOUR LOAN TO COVER EVERYTHING, BECAUSE IT WON'T!

Eating, going out, laundry, trains home, commuting, shopping, joining some societies etc, is all expensive when it adds up, so just have a spare account for any money you save. Even if you just save £100, that will help a lot. Next time you go out and have a spare £5 change, put it away and don't use it. If you're being asked to the cinema, don't get popcorn and save the money. It sounds ridiculous, but you really will be thankful you did it when in university! Good luck!

Woah, that writing was too big, my bad guys.

But to anyone reading this, I'd definitely recommend starting university with extra money. You can never have too much spare money really, and when times get hard and you can't afford to go out with friends, the best thing to do is dip into a spare fund rather than miss out!

best night out for each day of the week?

I'm a fresher too but just wondering what you think the best nights out are :P

Loving Sheffield though, so many opportunities to try new things. And our library (IC) is awesome, open 24/7 (which means they serve mochas with unlimited marsh mellows all night).

Oh and avoid the casinos :frown:

But Amyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. ):
I forget who everyone is on here, but I am guessing you're Amy as in my bummit buddy.
If not, woah, I just embarrassed myself.

NB: Bummit is a charity organisation in Sheffield, not a strange club of some sort. (':

That's meeeee :P

Wednesday nights, without a doubt. Either Roar if you're in a sports soc or Corp, can't beat it!

I've been out once, because I have no loan! :frown:
Tragic times.

This is why saving money is so important!
The only place I went to was Plug, and that was just awful. 4 odd hours of the same 'music' with no actual words, wooo.
I've heard that Corp is good and my flatmate likes Leadmills.
My other flatmates also said Carver street was amazing, so I'm definitely trying that when my money comes through in a few weeks.
Population is supposed to be good on a Monday, and I've heard ROAR on a Wednesday is fun. Can't be sure of the other days though, since I have no money and cannot go to them. ¬¬

I'll make up for it after exams. What are you studying?

I did not know they sold drinks 24/7, I am intrigued! Must spend an all-nighter there soon.
I have not been to the casinos either, maybe that's where I need to make some money, haha. Why ever not? Did you lose all of your money?

EatWithUS cards can be bought separately for people who are self-catered, and they are great, because you can put say £100 per year on it, and use it like a debit card throughout the year. It's cool because you can end up getting a few free meals from them (based on points) - like you get free spending with boots cards etc.
I don't have one yet, because I am low on money, but it is definitely a good idea. I always use the sandwich reward thing when buying lunch in the shop, it's a great way to save money.

Beer? Well, cider where I am from can be as expensive as £2.90/pint, but in a local restaurant in Sheffield, it was £2.09 for a pint, impressive! The same goes for beer I think, here it was £2.70ish, but there it's about £2.

I FINISHED UL LAW. Literally couldn't be happier. Well, I could, because it's an awful piece, but that aside, 3000 words and it contains a lot of what we were asked to include! Curse them for not allowing me to do Supreme court judgement, I had so much on it (1000 words odd) and had to delete it all yesterday when I realised it wasn't allowed. :frown:

My friend is a Biochemistry student! Anything you want to know in particular? I know that he has exams in the summer and not over Christmas, and that labs and coursework are part of the assessments. The teaching is good, he enjoys the subject, and the depth of the subject is a lot, more so than medicine in most areas.
At the end of the degree, you can do a transfer to Medicine that lasts a few years, and be a qualified doctor, as you will have covered most of the Medical stuff in BioChem.

Anything else?

When you say transfer, do you mean apply for a graduate entry program that would cover all of the medicine degree that isn't basic science (like clinical medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynaecology, paediatrics, general practice and all the rest) over the remaining four years?

I don't think so, I think you can at the end of the course. you may have to enquiry about it with somebody who knows more about it.
Don't mean to hijack the thread but I can also offer some advice  I'm a second-year Politics student. Feel free to ask things about social lives, the Politics department, general living stuff etc.
