History Applicants 2016

Just make sure you really read the course descriptions carefully for each Uni - they will all be different - and are clear about the sort of specialist areas that are on offer. Do they interest you? Look in particular at the optional units available in the 2nd/3rd year of the course. Do these genuinely interest you - if you had to choose now, what would you pick? Also, think about any extras on offer like study abroad, or options to take units in other subjects.

Did you go to Open Days or Offer Days at these Unis? If not, you can always just go for a walk around the campus (no one will challenge you for student id) to get a feel of the place, or you could look at the Open Day films on You Tube - what is each Uni trying to 'sell' you about their Uni or course? Think about the reality of living in each city - seaside at Exeter, historical city at York, expense of living in London/Kent. Etc etc.

Remember you have *months* to decide your Firm and Insurance - its better to wait and make a 'good' decision rather than panic and make the wrong one. Remember that once you have chosen, it is practically impossible to change your mind.

Has anyone else who applied to UCL been set a short essay to do? I have to do one answering 'How do Historians prove their arguments?'

Nope, you?

I have now! Got it a while ago and have firmed it - my offer is 3 As
I applied 2 hours before the deadline, it was absolutely horrible. I'm an international student, having a gap year... from a small non-academic school, small city, with no referee - I was, hands down, about to cry when going through this application process! My choices were Exeter, Nottingham, York, Queen Mary's and Kent. I should have gone lower due the problems with my personal statement, but it's too late now. Probably not getting any offers :frown:

My History was A (6), Social politics A (6), Finnish A (6) and English A (6). That's AAB converted to UK system.

My marks are all A* and I have done well participating in activities such as debating team.

I think what is going to push me under the bus is my lousy personal statement and the fact my referee hadn't written a reference before. He sent it 3 days after the deadline!

How long do you think it'll take the unis to get back to me, and if I got any chance to actually get in?

I was a late applicant for History with a Foundation year at Durham, Goldsmiths, Sheffield, Keele and Derby.
Got an interview with Sheffield later this month and offers from Keele and Derby. Really hoping to get into Durham though.
