I applied for the Foundation Year on 25 February and I haven't received an acknowledgement email. Should I be worried?

Hey, I applied on 24th Feb and received a letter about an interview today. No need to worry, it's not been that long since you applied.

Anyone have any advice on interview preparations and what it's going to be like?

Okay, so I'm not actually applying this year, but I'm hoping to apply for 2013 entry. I have a question for you. what A levels (or equivalent) did you do? because i'm currently doing a BTEC in (don't laugh) Art and Design. I know, ridiculous, BUT I did start A levels in Chemistry, Maths, Biology and psychology in 2009 (as I wanted to apply for medicine at that time). I had to leave further education in february though to look after my dad, as I was a young carer and he was pretty ill at the time. I've just returned to education in sept 2011 but doing the course has realised i don't want a career in the arts. I'm still going to complete the course to get the UCAS points, but I feel like they're going to brush me aside at first glance because I don't have even remotely relevent qualifications, and I don't want to have to put out the whole 'sob story' to get me in. Do any of you guys think i have a chance? :frown:

The point in a foundation year is to catch people up to the level of those who had done A levels in the subject and acquired good enough grades, so the applicant had either done badly previously or hadn't done the relevant subjects, so not doing the relevant subjects isn't going to make them turn you down. You'll have a strong chance as long as your PS & Reference are good.

Hey, I've got an interview next week for a science foundation year. I'm wondering what the interviews are like if anyone's had them? Do you have to take anything or answer anything in specific etc...

Thanks ^^

i had an engineering one, they generally don't ask too much, they just want to meet you, and to discuss your grades... if they are lower than what they want, bring a sign of improvement

although what the other person said was true i'm pretty certain Manchester don't accept BTEC's even for foundation courses, even if your circumstances were exceptional, the lowest they accept with relevant subjects is 3 C's which is 240 UCAS or BBB with non relevant 300 UCAS, additional to a good PS and reference, worth a shot i guess, but other places may be more forgiving, queens belfast do CC offers brunel CCD city uni london do a singlular C +180 ucas, greenwich you could get a place, but without good solid qual's i'd semi rule out the red bricks...

What would be a sign of improvement? I finished A levels 2 years ago, I did badly because I had no real focus in my life; I didn't know what I wanted to do after A levels and didn't put the effort in which is something I regret. Since then I started a degree in Architecture but left because it was not for me, I took a risk applying for a design subject to see if I'd enjoy it but I much prefer science.
anyone picking this subject in 2013????????????????

hmm then i have literally no clue, explain to them what you think you will do differently perhaps abit of background reading wouldn't go amiss, have a clear target to aim for...

Well I'm not applying for a foundation year in Engineering. I'm applying for a foundation year in science, thought it would be best to ask here though. I've applied this year, got an interview on wednesday.

Aww *******s :frown: well thanks for getting me to be realistic before i apply for all these places. i checked up on the ones i'm looking to apply for; manchester, cardiff and possibly nottingham (my other two choices will be for architecture, just in case i get outright rejected for all of the engineering foundation year courses).

manchester:
Advanced/Progression Diploma: The University of Manchester welcomes the introduction of the level 3 specialised diplomas. We look forward to providing guidance regarding progression opportunities and subject and grade requirements when further details on equivalences are published

cardiff:
For instance, if you have a GCSE pass in Mathematics and good A level passes in subjects that are not recognised for direct entry to our degree schemes, (eg. no Maths A level), the Foundation Year would be an ideal route for you to enter engineering. Likewise, if you have a BTEC or a similar vocational qualification in a non-engineering subject, an overseas Baccalaureate or School Leaving Certificate that is not recognised for direct entry, then why not consider the Foundation Year?

nottingham
We will consider any A-level (or equivalent, eg: BTEC, IB etc) subjects but in addition you should hold a GCSE Mathematics and a relevant Science subject at grade B, plus GCSE English at grade C.

they all CLAIM that they'll take BTEC's, but I doubt they've seen many people apply with one in Art in Design :/ do you think i should maybe ring them in september before applying?

Edit; oh wait, i've just been silly, advanced diploma is different, i thought it said extended diploma  i guess i'll keep looking.

deavinj, it would be best to ring up to be honest. That's the best way to get a clear answer on the subject.

Thanks. Here's hoping it all goes well and I do get an offer, I'd love nothing more than to go to Manchester in September

Don't be too nervous.. From what I have observed in the last months, u are almost guaranteed to have a place as long as u are more intelligent than a vegetable..
