this is the website for the application:http://www.readmedicine.com/

im thinking of applying if i dont get an offer in any english insituation due to me retaking my 2nd year. i believe the entry isn't as difficult as long as you get the grades in the country of origin.
all i want to know is what the difference in teaching is in europe compared to britain. the pros and cons of studying abroad. the fees are very similar to england however no loans are available.

i would like someone on tsr who has/is studying in europe to share the opinions please thank you.

PS:are you going to apply for 2012 entry

im in the same situation as you (im resitting some exams)

seen the unis shown on that website ... the problem for me is the fees - so flippin high!

mate its £9000 in uk compared to £10,000 approx in some european university's. however i believe living costs are less in europe, however traveling costs are higher.

in conclusion the money is worth it the cost of not takin another gap year.

depends on your opinion to be honest, i am considering because i dont want to waste another year. and all prices are increasing rather than decreasing every year.

btw what universitys are you applying for as an reapplicant and whats all your academic grades gcse and a/levels

PS: to be have an better chance of been offered an place if we achieve our grades by march by doing the exams in jan 2012, what do you think??

to your have any idea when the next dental schools in the UK is going to open, the compertion is ridicolous

In Europe, are the fees not up-front? Who helps you with finance?

the fees are upfront.
i dont mind taking a loan to pay the fees if i get an excellent degree at the end. loan from an family member i mean
the only disadvantage so far is that you might have to learn some sort of european language in the 4th year/clinical years to be able to communicate with patients.
however if that is not that case in some uni's that is an great advantage.

Wow you're family must be loaded! And also rather generous, considering there is still a risk of you failing! So telling "Bright.Inspiration." that it makes financial sense isn't really true (unless she too has a rich family).

Anyway, any uni offering dentistry will be in or near a city and while their are probably many locations around Europe with a fairly large number of english-speaking residents, by no means all of them will and that's enough for a uni to demand that you learn the language.

lol exactly
- the one in spain is asking for £17,000 per year !
thats like almost double the uk cost
its the only one i would consider going to since spanish is much easier than other languages in my opinion... but the cost is really putting me off
we have to fund it all privately - and no, i am not rich
taking a loan for such a massive amount of money is such a huge risk

i'm definitely not rich as i was receiving EMA lol, however looking at the state of the economy dentistry pretty much offers an guaranteed job with an secure future. i would much rather spend £17,000 in spain than spend £9000 in the uk studying biomedicine or pharmacy or any other medical related course then applying for dentistry as an post graduate where you will have to pay the tuition fees up front costing (3x£3000 or £9000) + (5x£9000) + other costs invloved
therefore not wasting as many years of your life where you can be earning money to pay of the loan.

i believe we are very fortunate to be able to study in europe and i certaintly believe i wont be getting into dentistry this year in my gap year so pharmacy will have to do

Fair enough. But you must have a rich family! The only family members I have with that much money will need it fairly soon and couldn't afford to wait for me for me to pay it back in such small amounts over a such a long period. Also, the repayment terms for the £9k fees in the UK are actually quite reasonable. Although of course it would be bad if you had to go for grad-entry, but at least that's 4 years not 5.

yeh 4 years not 5, my bad.
btw i personally believe education is worth the investment in the long term. especially for courses such as medicine and dentistry.

yeah, 2012 entry!
Even if you don't get the entry grades for it, some have exams that you can take in place of them.
I know of one person, who doesn't happen to be very helpful :|..... But anyway, she studied in Prague, the teaching and all was in English (y), People were alright (y), I think she came out with good grades? I mean, she is practicing in London so I can only imagine? I've read opinions on here of people knowing people who didnt know a word in their host countrys languages but liked it. It won't be quite the learning experience you have here but its the degree afterall. Also, some say that Eastern Europe is just as forward in their science and all that but??
Which country would be your first choice?

im looking for someone on tsr who actually has been to an european dental schools or is maybe studying there now to now the true reality abroad.

I know a few people studying at CEU this year. They love it. Teaching is much more tailored to you as an Individual ( I have heard they come out with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery) not a Bachelor as per the UK.
Their degree is recognised in the Staltes DDS. however you still need to sit state boards etc in the US.
The students in Spain are settling in and having a lovely time, They enjoy the beaches, clubs, night life and weather.
It is only a little over two hours to fly home.
There are around 30 UK students there at the moment and I have heard that 600 have applied this year for 50 places.
My best friends brother is there that is how I know!
The uni is modern and well equipped. The only drawback is if you are seriously considering moving there brush up on your Spanish, it is needed. Also the Uni is about 20 mins away from the city centre but it is well connected with Metro link. Living is much cheaper out there and really really nice compared to UK student digs. He said that they are a little disorganised though and they find that really frustrating sometimes.
But they are in general embracing a new culture, made loads of friends and it is very safe. Girls can walk out at 3 or 4 am in Moncada and it is safe. Hope that helps. They may have an open day in April. If anyone is thinking of going here go to the open day and chat with current students. Also m n d are out to make a lot of money. However, they are throwing you a life line in that if you do not secure a place here, you may get one over there but be warned...it is just as competitive:smile: and the standards are high. Exams are hard and ongoing. I know two dentists here who prefer Spanish trained dentists over English because they have said the standard of their work is FAR superior to Uk students. My friends brother and his family did a lot of research on this uni before they took the place up, because like you said it is not cheap, but then hey...do you really want to be doing biomed for four years and incurring debt only to wish you were doing dentistry? Go to the open day and make your mind up then. The students will tell you the good and bad stuff I am sure. Good Luck

+repped
You didnt mention the source of that figure "600" and "50" applied
Wondered if by any chance I could email your friend (the one who is actually doing the dental course in spain) . Good description also it sounds fun studying by the beach

What I would be very interested to know if the degree you get in spain or other uni abroad ( in europe ) is acceptable or/and not a disadvantage if you want to extend your degree in uk universities (as a specialist!) :ahee:

I am signed up to go to UCV in Valencia for dentistry. I didn't know about UEM at the time I applied. Is there anyone on here going to UCV? I spoke to them this morning about UEM and all they told me is that the university has not yet had any graduates in dentistry, in English or in Spanish, whereas UCV has already five years of Spanish graduates.

Wouldn't want to study in Spain at the mo. Too risky with it being at the epicentre of a Eurozone melt down. You might find yourself without a course / university 2 years in.

Strikes me Spanish unis must be really cash strapped if they have to pay people to recruit. Eh dnvo2020, azcar121, azcar121?
Give it up guys, your phoney posts are getting pretty tedious.
