Can anyone comment on Northwell house? The social aspect, distance to other halls, bathroom facilities, etc

Thanks

So basically I was wondering if it would be better to choose UH as 1st but risk not putting another hall down in my preferences, or hedge my bets and put MH 1st with UH 2nd, with a chance that I won't get either since they're over subscribed?

I'm in a similar position where I was looking at UH and Manor and planned on putting University first and Manor second but couldn't because Manor is restricted only to first. The price of both is pretty concerning, I've been working the last year and my year's savings are less than the price of either, seeing as Manor Hall is slightly more expensive I ended up thinking I'd just take the risk and put University first and pray that I'm definitely put in it. My number two is Northwell, which is the only other hall structure-ish one I can afford and looks pretty decent but I'd really want to be around other students even if it's in a generally more interesting area of the city than Stoke Bishop is.

I know it's not something to rely upon, but the "applications per residence" graph seems to suggest that University Hall is not overly popular. In theory everyone who put it as their first choice should have got into it.

Hi, was wondering how much effort people have put into their about me statements? I'm stressing out about it!

You don't have to write one if you don't want. I took about five minutes to write mine though.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed previously or not but I just got my results and I found out that I am going to Bristol! It was my insurance choice so I wasn't able to choose accommodation. I was wondering if anyone knew what halls people usually get placed into if Bristol is their insurance? Do we still get to pick preferences or do we just get placed into them? Thanks

Apparently we are in the same boat! But I just tried to hit "apply for undergraduate accommodation and it actually let me choose my preference.
Now I don't know which one to go for so I've come here looking for some answers. I'd say you try it in your VIP page if you haven't.

Hi, if I already have a confirmed place should I expect to get an offer for accommodation earlier? Thanks

If you're undergraduate then no, we all find out at the same time... On results day I think it's the 28th August

Time for the most important questions:

What are the internet speeds like?

Which rooms have wired ethernet?

What's the web filtering like?

I'm looking for modern, catered accommodation, hopefully fairly close to the CompSci buildings. Any recommendations?

For anyone who's already applied, do we have to put down a 3rd choice? I'm hoping to go for self-catered ensuite and all of them are either 1st or 2nd preference, so not sure what to keep as a 3rd choice.

Depends where you are, resnet was good - 100mb up and down.

Which rooms have wired ethernet?
Think all of them do, mine did.

What's the web filtering like?
For resnet they made you download and install a program before giving you access which was shady. Didn't want to 'test' their filters.

Hi, does anyone know about the courtrooms? How big/small are the rooms? How close is it to grocery shops and the city centre? Does it get noisy? Is it in Clifton or Stoke Bishop, although I don't know anything about that to be honest. I'm really interested in New Bridewell, but I can't find a second option to it, my just take it as my 2nd. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi amy102,

You can arrange a viewing via Skype here if you can't get down to us!

Thanks,

I don't think you HAVE to put down a 3rd choice, but you might as well pick the residence you most prefer as an alternative, just in case you don't get the 1st or 2nd choice

Internet speeds vary across accommodation. University accommodation has resnet or eduroam depending on which one you are in - I believe both aren't too bad and provide decent enough speeds. If you end up in a Unite one, most of them have Student Com, which I think on paper is a little slower than most of the other residences (about 20mb, you can pay for 40mb too), however it's still pretty reliable. I had Student Com and didn't have any major issues, it was reasonably reliable. Definitely good enough for any gaming or whatever you want with it. The Courtrooms I believe has the fastest though (I think about 100mb), so might be worth looking into.

I'm yet to see a room without wired Ethernet so you should be good on that front.

They don't really have much/any web filtering tbh. If there is anything they do filter, it's nothing you can't solve with the help of a proxy.

The only catered residence near the computer science building is Clifton Hill House and it's anything but modern. If you want something close I'd personally advice picking something self catered - you'll probably end up needing to cook for yourself second year anyway. I've lived at one of the riverside residences for the last year (waverly) and that's only about a 10 walk (if your in a hurry) or at most a 20 min walk to the CS building. There are also nicer and newer accommodations even closer, like orchard heights. If you really need modern and catered then perhaps try Stoke Bishop residences, it's anything but close but you get a free bus pass so it's not like you'd be walking it.

Don't stress, they just use it to try and put you with people you'll get on with. The only people that see it are you and the accommodation office. Just put generally what sort of person you are, they aren't going to spend a huge amount of time reading it so don't waste too much time on it.

It's worth putting a 3rd choice down - it doesn't mean you'll be any more likely to get your 1st/2nd. It's best to have a 3rd otherwise beyond your second choice they will be able to put you pretty much anywhere they have space.
Thought a bit more about what I'd like & I like the look of Churchill, Wills, Goldney & Hiatt Baker (self-catered) best.*

*Amongst those, which one is (subjectively) 'the best' and why?

The reasons I've picked those:
1. Decent & modern showers / en-suites & rooms (Goldneys comes last for facilities)
2. Room sizes & storage
3. Seem to have a strong sense of community
4. Have things like debate clubs, balls/garden parties, formals, concerts, etc. to get involved in.
5. Nice grounds.

4 is important to me as in an older student. I'm quite sociable and have lots of 18-22 yo friends, so want somewhere that's sociable & easy to meet lots of people, but also don't want to be in small self-contained flats in case I only get on with 2 out of 8 of my flat mates. *

If I could pick anywhere, I would pick Churchill's The Holmes as it is PERFECT! Looks nice + rooms, kitchens and en-suites are big and modern.

Also, what's with some of the halls being known as "edgy", "hipster" and lots of drug use?*

What are people there writing on their "about me" statements that they're l being rounded up in the same place?

Don't want to go somewhere where hard drugs is the norm. :/*

It's more to do with the price of the hall and the sort of people it attracts. Your statement only affects who you live with (your flat/floor/roommate etc) not the hall your allocated. If you don't like drugs avoid Hiatt Baker and Badock Halls. Although maybe consider some of the student house properties if you would prefer somewhere quiet.

Don't pick Hiatt Baker self catered, it's a flat/townhouse layout as opposed to a traditional hall layout. Not what your looking for. Churchill is a rah paradise (so is Wills to some extent). I'm not making a judgement here, it's just that might make the halls more or less appealing to you. Decent communities if you manage to fit in.Goldney has nice grounds, but is not in Stoke Bishop. I'd recommend S/B to you because you prioritise point 4 so much. Goldney may/may not work for you.

The more you let us know about yourself and what your looking for the better really, but all those residences (bar Hiatt Baker) sound ideal for you.

Thanks - I didn't think much of Hiatt Baker being in flats, as I saw that Goldney is too, so that's really helpful! I like the look of the student house properties, but not their location/lack of socialising and I don't want dead quiet.

Goldney is being offered only as 1st preference, with Wills and Churchill as 2nd. I think I might go for Goldney as first and either Wills or Churchill rather than Wills AND Churchill, but can't really decide between the latter two. :/ Any differences other than Friday formals & the Quad style architecture?

I also don't mind the rah thing - I've been at both private and state schools and got on fine.

Bristol's accommodation is on par with London prices, but the maintenance loan isn't as high. Also, the standard/quality of facilities is really poor, when for example, a nice en-suite room in St Anne's College, Oxford - see pics here http://www.st-annes.ox.ac.uk/vt/ - is £3641.75 per year compared to Goldney's £5,880.00. Is renting privately in 2nd & 3rd years equally expensive? I really don't want to be broke. :/

Wills is fabulous. Can't beat the old quad, and the amazingness of friday formals. Wouldn't have gone anywhere else.

2nd/3rd years depend on who you live with and where, but typically my share of rent each year was ~£130-140 PW which is fairly standard. Then bills, and food. Halls aren't really that expensive when you compare.

''I really don't want to be broke'' :frown: Expensive accommodation is part of the University there's not really much way to avoid it. 2nd/3rd year can be cheaper if you get enough people together to house share with. Private halls are even more expensive (although you get what you pay for). I have to work 15-25 a hours a week to cover rent and give myself enough money to live comfortable on. The size of the maintenance loan is hilarious . I'm sure you'll find a way to manage though. Choose Wills, Churchill is a place to go if you can't make it into Wills as a first preference etc. Unless you're activity seeking a quite life, ignore the student houses and go live in a hall.
