The Student Room Group

Why Are Louboutins So Grossly Overhyped?

These shoes are down there with Lacoste shirts (Primark/BHS cast offs with a croc stuck on) and Pauls Boutique coats (trench coats for the fashion challenged 15 year old) so will someone (especially someone who has blown 75% of their student loan on a pair) tell me whats so special about this toot that without the red sole, would not look out of place in a Clarks bargin bucket or a car boot sale :s-smilie:

Examples:

I'm sorry, but girls, how do these say "I've made it in life daaarlings" more than say.........a Louis Vuitton bag or a used Audi TT. I don't get it. Why the hype around such a mediocre product??? :lolwut:

From a boys point of view, these are a major turn-one, I really don't know why though, especially the black ones with the red sole, damn... :u:
bitches be crazy
They are some of the most comfortable heels ever made. Louboutin specializes in making sky scraping heels that do not break your feet. Also the quality of them - if treated well, they will last forever.

I know they cost a lot, but not nearly as much as some other designer shoes. These deserve the price tag they have.

they all have red soles...
thats their thing...

firstly there's the craftsmanship. they will not fall apart the second you wear them as ones from primark would. in fact they will last a very long time. Also the quality of the materials is incredibly high. as someone else has said he specialises in making high heeled shoes comfortable. so the materials used are supple and do not rub or irritate the skin. nor do they tear or wear away all that quickly/easily.

they are always perfectly shaped. the lines are always fluid and feminine. even the wedges are elegant instead of clonky and square. whereas shoes from clarks are almost always hideous

you've chosen like the plainest ones out there plain black shoes il get from office/zara/etc for a decent price
but there are others that you wouldnt be able to get elsewhere.
the amount of work that will ave gone into making a single pair is enourmous. it's like walking around in lil pieces of art.

its like asking why someone would choose a ferrari over a miata or a rolex over some run of the mill watch out of an argos catalogue...

as well as that. owning something that costs that much often indicates you've achieved something. It's obviously not the case some people. but for me they would symbolise hard work. to own a pair i will have to get the job i want, and then the ideal pay bracket which would require a few promotions, and get the necessary costs out of the way (i.e. car/house/pension fund/etc) and then save up (get rid of mortgage etc). they'd be a symbol of success.

different people want different things in their lives. some want enormous country houses, some want city penthouses, some want ridiculously expensive cars, some want vip sports season tickets, so what if i want a pair of red soled shoes? why is that any worse than my uncle paying all that money for a vintage alpha only to keep it in his garage and clean it? i'd be paying less and using them more

Anywhere from £400 for the standard black court ones up to £2,500 for the diamond ones.

Overrated and hideous imo.

I buy designer shoes, but not Loubs. The red sole is becoming too common. I don't want all my designer items to scream "designer", I just want them to look elegant, well made and smart. I'd prefer something classic and less in your face.

And no, they aren't comfortable.

he specialises in making high heeled shoes comfortable.

I read an interview in the daily mail with him and he said himself they're not meant to be comfortable, women are meant to suffer in the name of fashion. To me, at least, he came across a total misogynist.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1369014/I-HATE-concept-comfort--Christian-Louboutin-wearing-flat-shoes-like-bad-relationship.html

Mr Louboutin went on to describe how his footwear is designed more for men than it is for women - one of the purposes of his signature red lacquer sole.
'The core of my work is dedicated not to pleasing women, but to pleasing men,' he explained.

Very interesting post. Do you own a pair out of interest?

People can like and desire what they want but other than the bespoke one off versions, the quality and desirability of Louboutins simply doesn't jump out at me like they do with Rolexs, Ferraris or Louis Vuitton products.

no... unfortunately they are considerably out of my price range

thats fair enough. and i guess you've just proved my point haha!
im not interested in any of those three things you listed (not that i'd say no to a ferrari...), especially not louis vuitton (no offence).
everyones different
i dont think louboutins over hyped, or if they are only as much as rolexs/ferraris/louis vuitton
it's just that their popular
but even popular things wont be liked by everyone

I don't own a pair though I have worn some for a job before, I was left in absolute agony but then again I have quite wide feet whereas these ones were made quite narrow. They were gorgeous and could probably have been more comfy if i'd been able to get a wide version, but I don't think I could justify their price tag. They are fantastic quality though.

I'd rather own Louboutins than Gianmarco Lorenzis, much as the magpie in me adores these, Louboutins are considerably more practical:

Those shoes are beautiful!!!!

Alas I cannot afford designer heels. They never look comfortable and I'd end up breaking my neck after falling over :frown:.

Work has helped me become pretty much immune to deadly high heels - it took plenty of practice but i think i'm capable of walking in just about anything and its got to the point where I find walking in heels more natural than in flats!

I would have to say though i've never spent more than £100 on a pair of shoes, my favourite killer heels are a gold pair i got in the sale from Next this time last year, £20, 6.25in high, gold and a tad on the tight side, but they look like they came via the Victoria's Secret show!

I own a pair of Louboutins. I love them. I have not worn them yet, I got them as a present on Sunday for my 21st birthday. They cost €550

423356_2703195862200_1325837666_32142572_1943142709_n.jpg

I deliberately bought them as very plain, classic ones. I very nearly got another, much more out-there pair. They were absolutely gorgeous shoes, don't get me wrong, but they were going-out shoes and I cannot justify spending that much money on something that I will only wear going out, with certain outfits. But I personally think it makes much more sense to buy something classy that will go with absolutely everything. These are a beautiful shade of nude, they look beautiful on my skin, and although I own several pair of nude heels, there is absolutely no way that they compare to these.

Do I love other brands of heels? Yes, but I think that this particular pair of heels are incredibly classic that I will be able to wear going out (with pretty much every outfit), but also that I can wear to work when I start working in some kind of a business environment.

That said, I'm not justifying going out there and buying dozens of pairs of Louboutins, as a university student. These were a present for my 21st birthday, and while I'm very thankful for them, it's definitely a luxury and not something I plan on buying for myself until I'm working on a full time basis and can afford it.

EDIT: Also, I do not like most of the pairs in the opening post, those pink suede ones are horrific. I do like the black patent ones, though. I'm pretty sure every designer will have something you will not like. I don't think anyone is saying they'd go out there and buy a pair of Louboutins without actually loving the shoes themselves.
