Im 17 and iv just found out im pregnant from one of those tests, i think im probably about eight weeks and im going to the doctors next week to get a proper test and to get reffered for an abortion, does anyone know what an abortion at this stage will involve? also how easy will this be to keep from my parents will i get letters through the post or anything cause my parents always ask what there about? and what do i tell them when i have to go to the abortion clinic i really dont want them to find out

Not a nice situation to be in. There is a lot of information on the internet if you just google abortion 8 weeks. By the look of it its not something that will be easy to keep from yuor parents.

If it's a later abortion and you have to give birth to the baby then I assume it's a horrific thing to go through.

If you have pills (sounds like you will) then I think it's just like a normal miscarriage.
So it probably depends on how squemish you are, and it's not meant to be very painful or anything and you're looked after.

I couldn't imagine what you must be feeling right now.
But I know I'd carry it to full term and give it up for adoption, but I'm still sort of prochoice.

OP, you're making a brave decision and I respect you very much for this. It won't be that bad - you'll have lots of support and since its still quite early, you have to go through any major procedures. Bring a friend with you and if you're in a relationship, make sure your boyfriend is 100% supportive.

You will most likely just take two pills (see the link someone posted above). It is basically an induced miscarriage so there will be bleeding and clots, like a heavy period. You may have cramps, feel very emotional etc. basically just PMT type symptoms.

Please do not pay any attention to the unpleasant and unhelpful comments that some people have made on this thread. You need to make the right decision for you and that is all that matters in the end.

If you think you are about 8 weeks pregnant you need to make an appointment ASAP, as the pill method of termination is only used up to approx. 9 weeks. Phone up your surgery tomorrow and ask for an emergency appointment. You do not need to tell them what is wrong but tell them that it is very urgent, they should be able to give you an appointment. You then need to insist that they refer you immediately. From 9 weeks onwards the method is a little more invasive as a suction method is used to remove the foetus from the uterus.

You can usually go home on the same day, but if not you may want to confide in a close friend and then tell your parents that you are going for a sleepover to that friend's house.

At my school in philosophy and ethics we watched a video all about abortion, the procedures etc. It wasnt the best thing as it was very much aimed at telling us abortion was not the way forward. I did change a lot of girls opinions on the subject.

I agree more information really should be given.

hello i got the pill one at 6 weeks which is probably what you will get?
you can get the pill one up to like 10 weeks i think??
the other type is where they suck it out of you, thats the only one u can have after 10 weeks i think. i can't remember lol but you have to remember you may think the pill one is the easy option and it's NOT.
the pill one's not very nice i'm afraid but none of them are...
my parents never knew... basically u have to go in twice, one day after the other.
the first day they give u like 2 pills i think and u go home, nothing happens.
the next day you get 4 pills and u have to keep them in your mouth till they dissolve. DO NOT make the mistake i made!!
i got the bus home- bad mistake... they start working immediately. if you have to get a bus, get a taxi... i promise u wont regret it or get someone to drive you. i had to walk to the bus stop, 20 min bus journey and 10 min walk home. i was like OMG I WISH SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME NOT TO DO THIS!!!
i was with a friend but it was still bad, just like a really really heavy horrible period, massive cramps and stuff. i felt sick and my tummy hurt and my mouth hurt. sorry to tell u this but i wish someone had told me!! when u leave the place they tell u to wear a pad- WEAR LIKE 8!! there is ALOT of blood... sorry!! then you bleed like for 2 weeks after.
i dunno, when u get home just get yourself a hot water bottle and loads of painkillers and watch a movie or go to bed. tell your parents you are ill. try and have a friend with u, my friend had to go home like an hour after we got back to my house
the place i went to (marie stopes) they only do the appointments on weekdays lucky for me i booked them for halfterm, they were both in the morning so i told my mum i had to meed friends or something lol she was suspicious i was leaving early. if you are at college then skive or take sick days??

Ah that's interesting, can I ask did you go to a Catholic school? Just wondering why they showed you and if that's normal because I hadn't heard of that happening?

I don't think the videos should be biased, they should just show the facts, but surely it's good that your class were educated about the harsh reality of abortion? I mean, I'd prefer that girls saw what actually happens and decided they were against it than if they didn't know what the actual facts are and decided they were for it.

I agree it would have been better if the video was less biased. Its always good to get both sides of the argument.
We did it as part of the ethic side of our philosophy and ethics GCSE. The whole what do different religions make of abortion thing.
