Chemical engineering application thread 2012

Because i myself want to apply for a chemical engineering course and i was searching all over TSR for a thread, i couldnt find anything specific for chemical engineering thus i decided to create my own )

Feel free to talk about anything that has to do with chemical engineering so that we all benefit and dont have to run around and try and find information on different threads all over the place XD

haha i no longer have to search through the uni applicant threads looking for prospective chemical engineers :P
Choices: Birmingham Manchester Loughborough Newcastle UCL (All Meng and year in industry )
sending application in the next few days

thats great  i was going to apply to UCL since its my dream uni however they want an A in economics preferably ad i got a B since i already received my grades. I was predicted an A however i missed it by 3 points, sent it for a remark and now im 4 points away -_-

anyway thinking off applying to Loughborough, Birmingham, nottingham, surrey and the last one i dont know yet......please help me :P

i got ABB and in january will try and make it AAB

Also by the way, if we apply for a MEng course and dont make it, do we automatically get transfered lets say to the BEng course?

Depends on the university, but don't assume so. With applicant levels so high at many universities it is convenient for them to reject MEng applicants who miss their offers because they could likely fill the course many times over.

What MEng Chemical Engineering courses interview you and which ones don't?:-)

Hi i was wondering if i could do chemical engineering with an AS level in maths and an A level in chemistry physics and biology??

not many unis would accept that i guess...but go on ucas it should state it there

hmmm ye i will have a look i will quess i would have to drop biology instead of math there goes my back up plan of going into medcine.........

Yeah Chemical Engineering has a lot of math. Most universities would prefer maths to even to chemistry. Some universities even ask for As further maths.

I applied for Cambridge, Imperial, Birmingham, Loughborough and Surrey. All of which do interviews. Got invited to an interview at Surrey on the 16th of November and Birmingham on the 2nd. Imperial said they would let me know about my application today.

Wow that was quick, when did you sed your application? And I am sending mine Yo Birmingham, loghbrough and surrey also, do you know if tier interviews are formall towards the subject? And what type of questions to expect?

Well at Surrey I've been asked to take part in an exercise using the ideas of some of their equipment. I'd expect questions based on your personal statement, and it depends on who is interviewing you. I applied 30th September, but the college sent it off on the 13th. Apparently the interviews at Birmingham Surrey and Loughborough are partly informal chats. Imperial from what I've heard can be tough but it depends who interviews.

Most would test your thinking skills/application of scientific knowledge in a chemical field. As we haven't strictly learnt about chemical engineering. But they might expect you to have some basic knowledge. Imperial ( person who is interviewing you) and Cambridge from what I've heard expect you to have quite abit of knowledge.

I got AABB in AS, one mark of in my B in Physics. This year I am predicted A*A*Aa with a in Further Maths AS which I took up this year. Do I still have a chance at getting an offer from Imperial for Chemical Engineering. My reference was very good and people said so was my personal statement. Just worried about my AS grades. Already sent UCAS of, just getting a bit worried. All advice appreciated!

You know I'm in the exact same position here. I really hope I get into imperial. The only reason I applied to Cambridge was because my subject knowledge is better than my exam grades because my English sucks for describing scientific models. I'm predicted the exact same grades even with AS further maths. Was pissed with physics because my physics teacher was dead certain I'd get an A but I over revised my unit 2 and got a c in practical skills. So I was 3 off an A.:frown:

If I can't get in and I get A*AAa upwards I'll just apply next year and maybe do A2 further maths and A2 Biology if possible.

ABB? Is that your A2 results? Coz i got ABB in my A2s too! Im taking a gap year and im aiming to pump it up to AAA by january, i suggest you do too since its the requirement for Birmingham. Also, make sure you're predicted 3 As too.

I would suggest that you apply to either, UCL, Manchester or Leeds. Manch and leeds being redbrick are respected in the field, also pursue UCL your dream uni if you're feeling ambitious. If you get an interview and perform well, they make look over that economics trouble. Anyhow, you're retaking it, right? So it shouldn't be no biggie. On another point, i would suggest that you don't apply to sussex, just coz it's not that gd for chem eng.

Anyway Good Luck!

Well I'm a student from Cyprus, and I'm in the army so it's difficult for me to study and everything, I'm still reaching math to make my grade AAB and also I got my school leaving certificate which they accept since I'm allying as a Cypriot and inthat I got 91.13%/100% so it's good and they said they will look at both.

What do you mean about Manchester and Leeds?

Oh i see, well do the best you can. Manchester and Leeds are redbrick, meaning that they're specialists and well respected in the field of industry. Companies and firms in industry respect degrees from redbricks more than non-redbricks, so this is the advantage. Other Redbricks include sheffield, birmingham, liverpool and bristol.

Since liverpool and bristol don't do chemeng and sheffield isn't particularly good at chemeng compared to some of their other engineering courses, manchester, leeds and birmingham are three of the best out of all redbricks. However manchester ask for AAA (like birmingham), but Leeds will settle for AAB. Good Luck with your application!

This is a load of rubbish. No-one gives a damn about the colour of the bricks used to construct the building that the university is situated in.

lol , have you seen leeds? it's not red at all, it's more murky white.

Have a look at this

I know what a redbrick is. The term is based on the fact that the six main universities in it all have substantial amounts of buildings built with red bricks. Your statement that firms and industry respect degrees from these six universities more than the rest of the universities in the UK is completely false.

My friend you are largely misinformed. leeds is not good univeristy for chemical enginnering, Sheffield isnt the best but is by a country mile better for chem eng and in general. Leeds have a chem eng and nuclear course that has been running for more a year that isnt accredited. Sheffield has began a chem eng and nuclear course which is already accredited. I agree manchester is better, but it is heavily inflated in terms of grades and its studnet satisfaction is porr. Birmingham however is very good on all fronts. But please sheffield is above leeds in every league table; i dont live by the rankings but when it appears above leeds in three national, the international and in general rankings you have to take something from that.
