hey does anybody know what the hours are like on an average day doing the orthoptics course at sheffield ...i desperately need to know

hey i was wondering whether you guys could tell me whether or not i can do orthoptics at either university with a BTEC in Medical and Applied Science?

Hi there, apologies for the slow reply, I've not checked back onto this for a while. If you look on the UCAS site I'm sure it lists accepted qualifications. If still in doubt, you can contact the admissions tutors for Sheffield and Liverpool.
Their email addresses are on the BIOS website.
http://www.orthoptics.org.uk/making_application

Also, just thought I'd say as a little aside, BIOS is the British and Irish Orthoptic Association, its who we need to be registered with to practice and to learn. There are a few brief details listed on the website, so it's worth having a little look on there aswell if you've asked something on here and haven't got a reply.

Good luck to you all who are getting your results this week (I think it's this week anyway! ) Look forward to seeing those of you who have planned to go to Liverpool in September.

Reply 127
With my university they didnt actually give me the forms to apply for the nhs bursary untill the first week i had been there, so i woudnt worry to much at all. My bursary went in on time and everything was ok. If your really worried, you could ring your iuniversity and ask if they can give you any information that could help.

But if you havent filled in the forms, id defo just give the university a ring. Im sure it will be fine though.
Are we supposed to get the nhs bursary payment before we go to uni or in the first week at uni?

You should google NHS student bursary and go on the website. It provides all the information you need there. It also says:
Which application form should I download?
Please note: Once you have been accepted on a NHS funded course you will receive a letter from us containing your unique student reference number. Please do not submit an application without this number as it cannot be processed.

Thats the site, it has a bursary calculator so you can work out an approximate amount. When you applied for your student loan did you tell them you where getting an NHS Bursary? Because I think it can effect the amount you get?
Anyway, all the forms are on there, depends if you have that letter or not as to whether you can apply yet.
Hope this helps?

You get your bursary on the third Friday of every month. Starting in September. So you shouldn't have had it yet

A lot of people apply for Optometry as their other choices, assuming they're very similar, but they actually aren't.
I applied for Orthoptics at Liverpool and Sheffield, having Liverpool as my firm choice, despite it having lower requirements (which my college went mad at) and I only wanted to make those two options, but college went mad at that too, so they forced me to apply for Manc for Optom. Which was stupid, especially seeing as I didn't even mention it in my personal statement. Have you looked at Optometry? The grades are higher so it tends to be that Orthoptics is a back up for people wanting to optometry but it's worth having a look at.
Another common thing people look at are the other degrees classed as the allied health professions, because they're in health care and most (I think) are funded by the NHS. The only thing is, all the degrees are quite different so it is difficult to get a personal statement right for all of the subjects you've chosen to do.
A few of the allied health professions are: (off the top of my head)
Occupational Therapy
Radiography
Speech and Language Therapy
Audiology (I think, not definitely sure)
Physiotherapy
There's probably a few more, but I can't remember.
To be honest, it all depends on what interests you about Orthoptics, and how far you're really willing to broaden your application. Are you interested in healthcare generally? That sort of thing?
Don't let me influence your decision though! Just trying to give you some options. Have you visited an orthoptics department yet?

Also, can I just say, can everyone quote people when they reply to them? IT makes it easier to see whos talking to who.

ED: Also, I'm going to start an Orthoptics Applicants 2012 thread, and will link back to it here when I'm done. Will make it easier for those who are thinking of applying to talk about things amongst themselves

ED2: Here is the link for the new thread. It's took me ages so those of you that are applying, I hope you appreciate it! :p: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?p=33859725

Thank you so much for all the info :top: Yes I'm trying to get into optom but only putting 3 down so orthoptics is my other 2. I've tried at a few hospitals but none wil give me any work experience :frown: Just wondering where you did yours because I think that will be my downfall quite a bit even if i get the grades.

Hi David,
to answer your question, no, to pursue a career in Orthoptics you would need to undertake an Orthoptics degree at either Liverpool, Sheffield or Glasgow Caledonian University. Ophthalmi Dispensing leads to a career as a dispensing optician - a specialist trained to dispense and fit ophthalmic lenses and spectacle frames. An Orthoptist typically works within the eye department of a hospital/clinic and diagnoses/treats ocular motility disorders.
For further info visit the NHS careers website or University of Liverpool Orthoptics page.
