Level : Undergraduate
Course : Economics

08 entry

Cambridge (Clare College) - AA
LSE - AAA with a pass in further maths
UCL - Unsuccessful
Warwick - AABB
Bristol - ABB

Was predicted AAAA. Ended up firming and going to Clare.

Here is the statement:

Since childhood, frequent visits to China have allowed me to see how even my small home village has developed into a large vibrant town. Observing how this economic growth has impacted virtually all aspects of Chinese life sparked my interest in economics. By continuing this onto A-level studies, I have been able to discover how theories in economics shape society and fundamentally define how choices are being made. Beginning to understand the nature of firms and markets has allowed me to explore various aspects of the economic reform in China, and how this has had a significant impact on the global market. This is why I would like to study economics further, to better my appreciation of the influence economic changes have on society.

Since beginning A-level, I have enjoyed reading the Financial Times and Economax regularly, allowing me to discover how economics is applied to important current issues and events. I have read further books such as 'A Very Short Introduction to Capitalism' by J.Fulcher. This has given me an insight into the beginnings of a capitalist free market in the UK and how society has developed around this market. I especially enjoyed Legrain's 'Open World:/ The Truth About Globalisation'. This offered a powerful argument in favour of globalisation covering issues such as migration, trade, the environment and technology. Also, through reading 'The Undercover Economist' by T.Harford and 'The Armchair Economist' by S.Landsburg, I am beginning to discover how economics relates to everyday decisions, enabling me to more fully develop my reasoning skills.

I have also been keen to learn about the subject first-hand. I was lucky to gain invaluable work experience at a private equity investment firm. This was inspiring as I hope that a degree in Economics would enable me to enter this type of career. During the summer of 2007, I had a taste of working in China, auditing for China Rightson Certified Public Accountancy and working at State Grid in the finance department. The experience of working in a country in transition to a market made me realise how far China will have to change if it is to successfully adopt the ethos of a true market economy. Currently I am part of a team competing in the Target Two Point Zero challenge, assuming the role of the MPC, which is improving my analysis skills of the macro economy.

Academically, I have been awarded form prizes for four consecutive years and a prestigious King Edward Scholarship, awarded to only two people per year, for my GCSE performance. In addition, I have been awarded merit awards in both Junior and Intermediate Maths Olympiads on three occasions, and a distinction in the Senior Maths Olympiad. As a member of the National Academy of Gifted and Talented Youth, I attended a summer residential further maths course which I thoroughly enjoyed.

As a member of the school's student council in lower years, I represented my form, communicating their ideas to the council. Now, as an elected prefect, I continue this task as well as contributing to the smooth running of the school. Attending my local Chinese school each week has allowed me to become fluent in the language and has developed my understanding of Chinese history and culture. I led a team in the Envision Charity Scheme, organising events to protect the local environment; and as project manager for my Education in Engineering Scheme project, I was awarded a Gold Crest award. Additionally, I have been a maths mentor for students in local primary schools and at school maths master-classes. I am a keen guitarist, regularly playing in guitar ensembles and I have represented school and house at rugby and chess, as well as competing for Warwickshire County Badminton at U16.

I am looking forward to developing my interest in globalisation as well as furthering my analytical skills as an economist. I also hope I can continue to pursue my outside interests, contributing to the life of the university.

Hopes this helps future economists, can still remember looking on TSR for economics PS when I was applying last year.

I think there are also a few on the wiki which are currently blanked, and it's possible Kirsty has a number saved elsewhere, so might be a good idea to get in touch with her to chekc that bit out too.

Chinese Studies 2008 entry:

Cambridge: offer (1,2 German Abitur with 14/15 points in English/German/History)
SOAS(Chinese and Politics: offer (1,5 German Abitur)
SOAS(Chinese and History): offer (2,0 German Abitur)
Edinburgh(Chinese and History): offer (2,0 German Abitur)

In today's cosmopolitan world, it is more important than ever to look at almost every issue from an international perspective. Immanuel Kant believed that we are all citizens of the world, and this is a view which I strongly uphold, as I identify more with mankind than a certain nationality. For this reason, I have always been keen to understand our modern and global world and how it functions, what in my opinion is impossible without the comprehension of different cultures. Therefore I have been interested in the Chinese culture for a long time, as it is so different from our western culture but still influences us in many ways. That is why I wish to study the Chinese language and culture at university.
Coming from a multicultural family, as my father is Arabic and my mother is German, I came in touch with different cultures from an early age and my interest in learning more about these arose. I think that the language of a certain culture is an important tool to understand that culture and for this reason I have always been interested in learning new languages. Therefore I took part in a special programme at my school that allowed me to learn French and Latin besides English, although it is only common to study one additional foreign language. I also represented my school at national English and Latin language competitions several times.
Having developed the desire to broaden my mind by living in a country that was totally different from the west I decided to spend 11th grade at a high school in Beijing. In order to achieve this I began to study Chinese by myself in my spare time. During my year abroad I became self-reliant and experienced the Chinese language and culture that were almost totally new to me. Learning the language was both challenging and interesting, especially in an environment where I was able to directly use it. Although I mostly stayed in Chinese classes and had to study Chinese by myself, this allowed me to achieve a level of spoken Chinese where I could communicate, as only in this way I was able to really experience and learn something about life in China: what was very important for me. While living and studying together with Chinese students I concerned myself with the differences between the lives of Chinese and western teenagers especially regarding the role of school and education.
As China itself is a manifold country I decided to leave Beijing during vacation to travel independently to the poor western part of China to look at Chinese life from another perspective. This experience combined with the fact that it was the first time living in a non-democratic country made me interested in the Chinese political system and I considered whether a democratisation of China would be possible at present. Since my time in China I have also been intrigued by Chinese history and especially by the great changes China went through during the 20th century.
After having read Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse and meeting Buddhists during my time in China I wanted to learn more about this religion that previously influenced western intellectuals and fascinates so many people in the western world today. I am keen on not only studying modern but also classical Chinese, as based on my experience with Latin texts I think that the best way to understand ancient texts is by reading the original version.
As I wanted to pass on my acquired knowledge I taught a group of younger pupils both the Chinese language and culture. I think that this improved my presentation skills but also showed me how to not only learn something but to pass it on to others. In my free time I enjoy reading novels and books about politics, philosophy and history. I have also played both violin and viola for twelve years, and am a member of our local symphony orchestra. Aspiring to an academic career I think that due to the international reputation and brilliant teaching quality I am looking forward to attending university in the UK.

Post A level Re-applicant Grades in Sig.

University of Cambridge Engineering - Unconditional
University of Southampton Mech Eng with Bio Eng - Unconditional
University of Bath - Mech Eng 5 yr Sandwich with German - Unconditional
University of Manchester - Chemical Engineering - Unconditional
Imperial College London - Chemical Engineering - Unconditional

As a young boy, I have often been told that curiosity killed the cat, but although curiosity never got me killed, it sure did get me into quite a lot of trouble. I used to always fiddle with things, rare artifacts that my father used to bring home, and as one would expect, such fiddling usually ended with something broken; my usual excuse was I just wanted to see how it works.
This curiosity has developed and now manifests itself in my desire to read engineering. I had always considered engineering to be a science that studies the functioning of systems and to improve them by coming up with clever ideas, but it was not until I picked up Henry Petroski's books "Remaking the world" and "To engineer is human" that I realized that engineering covers a much wider range of abilities, that there is much more to engineering than just sitting in a dark room trying to come up with ingenious and clever ideas.
I'd never thought about the human side to engineering; how correcting human failures is the most important lesson to be learnt; how too much confidence causes accidents but worry prevents them; how engineering doesn't exist "for its own sake but for society's sake". These findings did not scare me away from engineering; in fact, I was even more attracted to it.
Whilst reading through the books I also came across a very interesting phrase: "standing on the shoulders of giants". At first I didn't quite capture its full meaning, however when I read how our modern day internal combustion engine evolved from the primitive Greek steam engine, it finally clicked. The reason we are able to see this far today is due to all those achievements in the past and my aim in engineering is to see farther thus allowing tomorrow's engineers to see farthest.
Last summer I spent three weeks doing voluntary work on board a tanker that sailed along the west coast of Africa. It was an enlightening experience that had significant impact in my respect for all professions, as well as giving me an opportunity to observe the functioning and the maintenance duties involved with the ship's engine. This summer however, I topped up my organizational and leadership skills and headed a backpacking expedition of 16 people around Europe. Much teamwork was involved in finding accommodation and train tickets for such a large group on such short notice, but nevertheless the trip went as scheduled.
At first, I wished to take a gap year to gain some industrial experience in the field of study, nonetheless my nationality doesn't allow for me to work freely in many countries (e.g. the YINI scheme), thus I have decided to dedicate this year to academics. I shall be working as a support teacher at my school, helping a wide age range of pupils with their difficulties in Maths, Chemistry or Physics. The level will probably range from pre-IGCSE to AS, and the number of pupils will depend on the needs. It is also my intention, during the gap year, to do voluntary work on wildlife conservation schemes.
Regarding academics, I have completed all of my A levels and have enjoyed them greatly. Much of the work I did was outside the school's academic requirements. Such is the case of Further Mathematics, where many unlucky incidents occurred throughout its course, or my AEA Chemistry, where my school unfortunately lost my exam paper before it was sent.
Outside classroom I enjoy a variety of sports such as football, tennis, basketball, bowling, swimming, martial arts most of which I have carried up to a competing level (tennis, basketball, swimming) but never reached a professional level, although I still actively enjoy them as hobbies. Only last year, I also started playing the guitar with the help of a friend and have performed twice already in school concerts.
My readings around the history of engineering through Petroski's books have taught me much about the journey I'm about to embark on. Science has taught what is; now I'd like to use this knowledge to create what never was.

My Personal Statement for 2009-10 entry

Cambridge (History): Unsuccessful
LSE (International Relations): Offer - AAB excl. Further Maths - Firm
Warwick (Economics, Politics and International Studies): Offer - AAB and B in AS - Insurance
Bristol (Economics and Politics): Offer - AAA including Maths - Declined
Birmingham (Economics): Offer - ABB - Declined

It may sound exaggerated, but I genuinely love History, and it has become a part of my life for over four years. As contemporary political events have increasingly become my main concern in recent years, Politics and Economics are also my favourite subjects. Therefore, I decided to take them as A-level subjects - "a powerful combination" as the Director of Studies commented - along with Further Maths which could develop my logical thinking.

I learnt to read very early, and that has contributed to my early interest in History. Besides playing the piano and reading news, it is my habit to pore over every history document coming to hand and talk about them excitingly when asked. As an imaginative person, History with me is not cold remote facts as most people consider, but successive events relating closely to each other, which can be redrawn vividly in my mind. For that reason, modern history is my favourite due to the incredibly dynamic nature of its events, with various factors to evaluate. Liveliness is what I can also find in A-level books, and my most-read is "Weimar and Nazi Germany" which provides information on many aspects of life in the two regimes and compares them through good analysis and lots of illustrations.

My political awareness and concern about global affairs has developed since childhood through reading newspapers and watching news frequently. Studying modern history led me to frequently asked questions of our time: why there are conflicts and tensions between peoples, what their causes are and how they can be resolved. To answer them, I have been building up my political knowledge through studying books as well as political articles and analyses from newspapers. Discussing politics with my father is one of my habits. For me, political theories and international relations are very interesting topics that I cannot stop thinking about, and studying in the UK gives me a broad approach to different, including Western, political views and concepts.

Economics surprised me with its diversity of theories and interpretations of human economic activities. It provided me a brand new approach to political and social processes, as well as historical events, and helped me evaluate them from economists' perspectives. Knowledge of macroeconomic concepts is important for me to assess important social events; however, the study of microeconomics has helped me understand how an economy functions every day and how human beings' complex minds affect economic factors. I think Economics is a very important subject as my knowledge can be useful in developing our country's infant free market as well as avoiding negative impacts resulting from it.

People often assume that, with such academic concerns, I am a bookworm, but the truth is more interesting. Eight years of my education in Vietnam were spent on an experimental programme, which was different from the rigid, unimaginative rote learning in most schools. Thanks to it, I always consider my favourite subjects "friends" in a true sense; they have "walked out" from lectures and libraries to follow me step by step. Having few self-made pressures from studying, I am eager to socialise, and my friends in Vietnam still remember me as a confident speaker in the high school Student Council, the provider of ideas for the school charitable programmes, or a key member of the Dreams and Teams Club. Last year in the UK, despite a demanding timetable, I still managed to participate in the school choir where I could satisfy my music interests and met many friends, and weekly trips to the local Sports Centre helped refresh my mind to enjoy a busy school life.

Together, History, Politics and Economics have built up in my mind a comprehensive approach to human beings' processes past and present, and with a relevant degree at university I hope I
can see the right way to the future and answer unsolved questions of our time.

Ok here is mine I'm currently a first year undergrad.

Personal Statement for Law

A levels- AAAABb (Maths, English, Geography, General Studies, Further Maths, Politics- in that order)

Received 5 Offers, all conditional-
Uni of Nottingham AAA (where I currently am)
Uni of Manchester AAA
Uni of Leeds AAA (inc GS)
Uni of Edinburgh BBB
Uni of Oxford AAA (although rejected after interview.)

Please don't rip it to shreds too much -

Without the law, society will cease to exist as we know it. It is of vital importance, and protects individuals from the major power of corporations and the Government. Law is constantly evolving in order to adapt to an ever changing world. It is for these reasons that I believe I should study such an important subject.

This year I had the privilege of being appointed Head Girl by members of staff and voted form captain by my peers. These roles give me extra responsibilities and challenges to face, including chairing both the student council and the sixth form committee, and I look forward to these. With regards to my chosen subjects for A level, I wanted to study a diverse range of subjects so to acquire a variety of skills, which I believe are necessary in the study of law. As well as A Levels, this year I took on the extra commitment of Young Enterprise. Forming a business with my peers showed me that compromise is needed in order to work as a team. We rose to every challenge we were faced with and ended up winning the ‘best product’ prize on the Isle of Man. Hard work and dedication were essential to run a successful Young Enterprise company, and I believe the same qualities are necessary for a Law degree.

Recently some of my free time has been spent in the Isle of Man Courts of Justice observing the courts in session. I found it fascinating how much responsibility a barrister has, and I feel that I am mature enough to cope with these demands. One of the more high profile cases that I observed was even reported on in the Manx newspapers, which reminded me of how much focus is on law. Since the age of 14, I have had a part time job. I currently work at the bookshop ‘Waterstone’s’. This has developed my maturity and independence. I enjoy working, and feel at a loss in the holidays if I don’t have anything to do. Working at Waterstone’s has also fuelled my love of reading fiction novels, which I find helps me to relax.

In October last year I travelled to Liuyang China with a group of students from my 6th form. Here, we visited a school for a week, teaching students English and giving them an insight into Western culture. This trip was an amazing experience, and left me with the desire to help others less fortunate than myself. I believe studying Law will enable me to do this, as lawyers give a voice to those who may otherwise not be aware of their rights and I would like to be involved in legal aid work. After our trip, I participated in a fund raising effort to sponsor a few of the less privileged chinese students to enable them to visit the Isle of Man and London. This was a huge success, giving them an invaluable opportunity to improve their English, as well as the experience to view life in the Western World as they had never left China.

A long term interest of mine is dancing. Since the age of 5 I have learnt ballet and tap dancing, passing exams up to grade 6 in both. My commitment to dancing helps me to relax, but at the same time I have to be focused to remember all the routines. As well as dancing I enjoy playing netball for my school team. I find this helps me to work effectively as a team. In the past I have both swam and played badminton for the respective island teams. Due to differing legislation on the Isle of Man, I was able to pass my driving test first time at the age of 16. This acquired skill allows me to go on long drives in the Manx countryside, a pastime which I find very enjoyable.

Studying Law will be a challenge that I will relish. I very much look forward to embarking into Higher Education.

Hi, This is the personal statement that I used in the 09-10 entry. I applied for only LSE in the 08-09 cycle with a slightly longer personal statement for economics and was rejected by default by 4th May 08. After editing my personal statement, I tried my luck again this year.

Personal Statement for Economics

Singapore GCE 'A' Levels - AAAA (Physics,Chemistry, Economics and Mathematics)

Received 3 offers from the 3 universities I applied to this year
LSE (Economics) - Unconditional - Firm
UCL (Economics) - Unconditional
Warwick (Economics) - Conditional (Hand in Academic Reference and english qualification)

Deleted for now. Will repost when i enter LSE this October.

I thought I share my personal statement as there are not many LSE personal statement in the PS Library.

UCAS Personal Statement

My interest in studying Business and Management comes from initially discussing with my father about his experiences and working part time in the company he runs. This has led me to become more conscious of organisational behaviour and to believe that excellent communication, innovation, decision making and enthusiasm are all essential for effective business management.

During my time in the sixth form I have developed my management skills through a variety of projects with set deadlines. This required me to plan and organise my workload efficiently, as well as being able to identify and resolve problems.
Studying Business Studies allowed me to learn key features and strategies necessary to succeed, and then research and question how these are applied to real life circumstances. This has led me to develop skills of analysis and the capacity to work independently, as well as part of a group. My understanding of business activities was greatly enhanced through a field trip to Cyprus, where a number of businesses, including the tourism board and an aluminium manufacturing plant, were visited. These visits put into perspective and utilised the knowledge I had previously acquired in lessons and helped me to develop personal skills by listening attentively and asking in-depth questions.
I have developed an academic and mathematical foundation through studying Statistics. This allows me to apply skills of numeracy to situations, through collecting, analysing and interpreting data and then making informed decisions in areas such as finance, marketing and research. For a business to be successful, I feel that it is important that Statistics are understood to assess performance, so that corrective action can be taken if required.
Gaining knowledge of ICT enabled me to view the importance of technology in business. This was supported by a field trip to EDF Energy’s southern office, where there were a number of management based activities focusing on how businesses gain the competitive edge.
Through analysing several case studies based upon international business, globalisation and climate change, Geography has helped me to understand how businesses function in a global context, shaped by social, economical, political and environmental factors.
Living in Singapore for two years helped me to understand and accept other cultures and religions, which helped me to realise the importance of ethics in effective global business management.

Academically I have become a strong and motivated person. My dedication to school work has resulted in recent examination success and being invited to join the ‘National Academy For Gifted And Talented Youth’.
I have been involved in a number of extra curricular activities including going to the gym, playing the saxophone, badminton and football. I have also attended university lectures on Business Studies and Geography, and was a delegate at the ‘Model United Nations General Assembly’, where I acted as a representative for North Korea and had to speak about challenging world issues to a large audience. This required diplomatic skills and confidence, in having to express a large number of controversial opinions. These activities have all resulted in teamwork skills and leadership qualities, enabling me to cooperate and communicate well with others.

Through my experience in a variety of part time employment with Woolworths, Dynalite and Tesco, I have been able to understand diverse business cultures and to develop knowledge in various departments, such as sales and customer service, administration and logistics, computer aided design and human resources.

This degree will equip me well for my career in business, and from my experience and ambition, I am confident that I have the required self motivation, ability and commitment to succeed.

Statement

I find a constant source of pleasure in conceptualising unfamiliar ideas as well as thinking logically and analytically to arrive at satisfying and often beautiful proofs. I am fascinated by the ubiquity of maths and the way that it underpins everything around us. I encountered binary maths at the age of five and since then have found numbers and logic bewitching.

I have had many opportunities to apply my maths skills over the years. In year 7, I obtained a gold award in the UK Mathematical Challenge which gained me a place on a series of mathematics master-classes. These classes covered topics ranging from relativity to John Conway's Perpetual Calendar and showed me a more mature mathematical way of thinking. Reading books such as 'Fermat's Last Theorem' and attending various maths and science lectures also fuelled and deepened my interest. I regularly attend a maths club in Cardiff University, tackling problems independently then discussing solutions with other keen mathematicians. I completed a national engineering scheme where our team undertook a project to save water. We did extensive research to develop solutions for the company's challenge then produced a report on our findings and delivered an extended presentation to a panel. For the project to succeed we had to apply a wide range of skills for example ICT, problem solving, communication and application of number. I have enjoyed learning more about the way the world works through chemistry and physics lessons while the many unfamiliar and abstract ideas in maths have been fascinating.
I thrive on independent study, yet enjoy collaboration. My tutoring of students for their GCSE maths was a fascinating experience which also helped me analyse and develop my own studies and mathematical skills. Over the last six months I have volunteered for over 100 hours in an after-school, play-care facility. I also run a book club and a contemporary dance club at my school where I have learned how to prepare suitable yet challenging work for the students then apply my preparation into practice. I subscribe to National Geographic and read the New Scientist regularly.

I am 'full of life', confident and at ease in new situations. I enjoy the unknown. I am determined and committed to everything I decide to do and like to arrive at my own conclusions through discussion and debate.
Dance is a passion for me as a creative and practical activity. I do over 7 hours a week of ballet and contemporary dance training which has given me a high-level technique and skill base with a growing sense of artistry. I am a member of the national dance company of Wales' associates' scheme and am studying advanced grades in ballet. I travel widely, recently visiting places such as India, Morocco and Vietnam - all of which have increased my sense of independence and search for new experiences. I represent my County in cross-country races, which offers me physical and mental challenges which I face with eager enthusiasm.

The increased pace of Further Maths has suited me and I have succeeded in gaining 100% in four of my maths and physics modules in year 12. The far-reaching applicability and connections between different fields in mathematics gives me a thirst for knowledge across a broad spectrum of pure and applied mathematics. By tackling and discussing challenging maths problems and extending my knowledge in a variety of ways, I have found my passion for maths increasing greatly this year. I want this to continue in my university life through the intensity of the maths course and I want to gain a depth of knowledge in mathematics. I know this will lead me along fascinating avenues and I look forward to finding out about new and exciting areas of mathematics as I make the transition from school to university.

Am I right in thinking that your PS's are personal statements that has been used for this years entry? If this is the case we tend not to put them up on the wiki until you have actually started.

If you could let me know the situation that would be great

They others have been put up now

Probably still best to wait until you've actually started and you know that you will no longer require it again. We can put it up in September/October time
