Can u please help(International STudent)

Hi Im An international student from Pakistan
Until yesterday it was sure that im going to Loughborugh for Management Sciences i got unconditional offer from lboro but just today got an unconditional from Nottingham for Finance Accounting N management
As an international student i dont know much abt the universities else wat i get from prospectus, league tables n forums like this i cant visit the place cant meet current students so its becoming very difficult for me to choose between these two.
I like the course at Loughborough but Loughborough BUsiness School (Business Studies) rankings has gone down to 18 from 9 im worried abt this but is it anything to worry abt? loughborugh's overall ranking has gone down too.
On the other hand nottingham's rankings has moved up both overall n BUsiness studies.
The thing attracts me most at loughborough is Sandwich program coz it gives u experience plus its a paid placement so it will b easy for me to pay final year fee as it is alot for international students
on the other hand nottinghams degrees r BA not BSc does it matter? how do u differentiate a Bsc n BA degree?
Im worried most abt where i will be standing after the completion of my degree which uni has more to offer n ofcourse which has better reputation generally n ofcourse among employers ofcourse grades r most important but for the time being putting grades aside which one is a better option n why?

Hey Nitsbox is from Dubai and he's coming to Notts to do Accounting, Finance and Management - maybe he can help you? He's cool  Sounds like you two will be doing the same course if you come to Notts lol!

I dunno for Buisness, but for science anyway, employers prefer BSc cus it's harder and more people have BAs in general. This is for Sciences, not Business, though, cus I'm in for a science course lol.

I've never been to Loughborough, but Nottingham anyway have always sounded like a lovely uni and when I went I quite liked the spaciousness and the green of it all  I don't think it truly matters which uni you're from, especially when there isn't much difference between Notts and Loughborough anyway - employers are more concerned with experience, and what you come out with - like, a first or a 2i. There're teachers from my school that ranges from APU and De Monfort to Cambridge and Southampton - the one from APU is actually our head of sixth form as well. So yeh, I'm not sure unis reputation makes that much difference unless you're talking huge differences like, between Cambridge and APU, or Loughborough and Trent, etc.

What's making you wanna choose Nottingham, apart from the reputation? It's more important that you enjoy your course. It's no good if you hate the course structure and the place even if it's ranked top you know. I think personally I might go for Loughborough tbh - the sandwich year is quite valuable. Experience is always an invaluable thing, better than the degree, really.

Tbh you probably know which one you wanna go for - you just don't wanna decide. It's almost always the case with most people. Just go with the one that feels right  If the two were exactly the same, which one would you go for? That way, there's nothing to regret once you graduate.

Thanks for the reply.
if both were same i would have gone for Loughborough coz i like the course structure alot its also good at notts but not as good as at lboro.
secondly the experience advantage at lboro. infact i love everything abt lboro
But as i told u as an international students its the reputation that comes in my mind just again n again that perhaps i will be in a better position after graduating from notts this is where notts is above lboro though not much i guess.
the following things r imporant for me.
wat i learn from my uni n wat it has to offer.
experince n value of the degree.
where i stand after graduation n the career prospects of my course.
Im not much into night life n things like that.

I mean at the moment its all confusion in my mind just dont know wat to do which one to choose.

If you love everything at Loughborough - go for Loughborough. Seriously reputation doesn't mean that much when you get employed - it's experience and how good your degree is they really want.

You planning on going back to Pakastan after graudation? How would they know over there how good the unis are over here anyway? - unless it's Oxbridge and Imperial, I doubt they know the difference between Nottingham and Loughborough. Besides it's such a minor difference it's not worth choosing Notts for if it's Loughborough you really love. The difference between the two is too small for it to worth choosing Notts for - and the sandwich year - I like sandwich years. Like, at Nottingham, for the Neuroscience course anyway, the professor told me they do not take PhD students without industrial placement in their first degree - goes to show how valuable the sandwich year is really. What Loughborough does not offer in reputation, it probably offers in the sandwich year. It'll give you a head start to experience, even though you'll get experience eventually anyway regardless.

Seriously, whichever way you look at it, Loughborough - I say Loughborough for you. Although obviously I'm more in love with Notts seeing as I'm going there and never applied to Loughborough lol!

I had a horrible time deciding between Nottingham and Cardiff to study architecture. It was a bit like your case, I felt a tiny bit more inclined towards Cardiff in terms of what they have to offer in the course but I end up choosing Nottingham, partly because of it's (much) higher reputation.

The point is, I take reputation into consideration and I don't think the course structure should be the sole determinant. You can't really jude how the teaching/learning process is done until youre actually enrolled into the school. Like you said Janealams, where you stand after graduation is still an important factor.

Come to Nottingham!

Lol. Well it all depends on just how much difference there is. In your case, Notts was MUCH higher than Cardiff, as you said - whereas Loughborough isn't that far behind from Nottingham. And in the end - it's University - half of it is gonna be self-study - the teaching wouldn't affect much and if you're good at the subject, you're likely to be able to do it by self-study anyway.

If she were deciding between a course at Cambridge and the same course at Nottingham Trent - there'll hardly be any question it'll obviously be Cambridge. But Loughborough and Nottingham there isn't a huge difference at all!

I dont know whether i will come to Pakistan or not thats too early to say i wanna do MBA may be in between my 1st degree n MBA i work in UK just to get the valuable work experience n that is where i think alot which uni employers prefer in uk notts or lboro especial when ur an international student n u know its hell of a job to get one if ur an intl student.
but definately after MBA will come back to Pakistan. but even talking abt MBA is too early even if i come back after my 1st degree i will get good enough job hopefully
I agree to the fact that there is not much difference in repuation infact just looking again at the points too there is just 5 or 6 points margin which is not big a guess.
why u didnt apply to notts:biggrin: coz of the course or u dont like it.
btw wat do u think abt generally putting my case aside

True. It doesn't mean that if you graduated from Loughborough, youre not going to be employed!

10% of my decision of coming to Nottingham is based on the fact that it's a campus. Campus is a nice place to be in, y'know. Think ALOT about the environment between the two universities. Is Loughborough a campus university?

ya i did read ur thread but i guess repuation is not everything. experience n course structure hold importance too. plus the teaching standard of lboro r second only to cambride the employement record of lboro business students is good too as i said the only thing i think abt notts is repu:biggrin:

Ya lboro is a campus uni i heard its the biggest campus in europe SU is too one of the biggest in the country n that was also one of the reason of choosing lboro.

I think coming from either Notts of Loughborough you'll get a good enough job anyway  and people are gonna have higher regards for your MBA anyway.

Lol if it's just the reputation - seriously - I repeat - go to Loughborough!

What I think of Nottingham? Well I've only ever been there once on an open day lol! When I went I didn't like the fact that you have to go on the bus everywhere, or walk 10min  but I figure once I get used to the place, it'll be fine. I liked the spaciousness and the green. I chose it on the degree - it was between Bristol and Nottingham, MSci Pharmaoclogy at Bristol or MSci Neuroscience at Nottingham. Both asks for BBB and Notts was and still is only behind Bristol by two unis. I decided in the end I wanted to do Neuroscience and not Pharmacology, which decided for me really cus I'd only applied for 1 Neuroscience. But I dunno, Nottingham just feels right  It really does. And it's medical centre is so well-known it's great for Neuroscience, which is a medical science, obviously. It's not too crowded like London is. I dunno - it's just always gonna be Nottingham. My original was Cambridge but they rejected me - and Nottingham was always gonna be second to Cam - and now I'm really glad Cam rejected me cus I've realised how right Nottingham is for me  especially the course - it being Neuroscience, rather than Natural Science (which allows you to specialise only in your 3rd year).

So yeh, that's why I chose Nottingham - there weren't really any obviously reasons - it's just always gonna be Nottingham. I can see that now on hindsight - it was always gonna be Notts!

Remember that in the 3/4 years you're at uni the league tables may change. Also league table rankings differ - i personally don't think they're very reliable. I think that if you love everything about Loughborough you should go where you are happiest. xx

my criteria for choosing uni's, were initally based on the quality of the website. i hated reading at first. then grew to love it quickly. as the deadline for accepting offers grew closer i decided nottingham was going to be a worthy insurance.. then i saw their full website.. the accomodation.. and realised sherwood was in notts and not near bristol as i thot it was.. within days i discovered this notts forum on TSR, and that made me change my mind from reading to notts.

something about this uni just clicks with what i expect out of my future.
