Re: Aeronautical Engineering at University of SouthamptonHi, no im not a fresher ... yet! I will be applying this year and i loved Southampton when i went there. I reli want to get into Southampton as well! I was just wondering what GCSES and AS grades you got? And also if i could read your personal statement? I have done my PS roughly but i want to know what a Soton man has put in his lol! Was this your first choice? Where else did you apply too?(Original post by The-Mongrel)
I'm in on that course too, woo! Just having got in that is. Not sure how much help I can be with your questions but hey. Are you about to be a fresher too?
I always hear people saying that Southampton is a **** hole but i didnt think so! I don't know why people say that!
Finally does Southampton have an interview(which will decide if you get in), a formal one (i think that is what im talking about)
Sorry about allllllll these questionsssss but i am curious lol
i hope you enjoy your time at southampton btw!! -
Re: Aeronautical Engineering at University of Southampton
All right
So far as grades are concerned I got a few A*s a couple A's and a couple of B's for GCSE. For AS levels I did maths, further maths, physics and chemistry. AS grades were a's generally with I think a couple of b's. Apart from chemistry they were OK (ffs don't forget to go to any of *your* exams).
This January is really when you need to make your exams count though, make things as easy as possible for yourself in the summer by roger-ing the ums scores into submission.
As for applications, I applied to southampton, imperial, manchester, bristol and sheffield. Southampton and imperial wanted 3 A's the others wanted AAB. The plan was to have either soton or imperial (preferably soton) as the high offer and another as the low offer Southampton did not interview me. The only other ones that had a real proper interview were bristol and imperial. So southampton were my firm with bristol as insurance.
Congratulations for doing a PS allready! I took a bit of a last minute balls-out approach on that one, I'd send it over too but I had all that kind of thing on the school network so it'll be resting in peace now. Basically I just wrote a bit of a poncy first paragraph about inspiration for doing the course and stuff, then went into detail on my subjects and how they were relevant, then extra curriccular and how they were relevant, then hobbies and interests and a poncy closing sentence, in that order.
lol i hope its not a **** hole, seemed ok when I went for the open day. There is a large city there and cities aren't exactly attractive, but there's a fair bit of green space too, especially around the main campus of the university itself. The halls are quite tree'y as well. The staff and students seemed quite nice too.
Best of luck with the application though! (send it in as soon as ucas opens)
If you have any other questions i'll be happy to try and answer them -
Re: Aeronautical Engineering at University of Southampton
Thank you for your help!
I want Bristol as my insurance too!
Why did you choose Southampton over Imperial??
My PS is a bit similar! About my inspiration etc lol
Yeh i reli loved Southampton Uni it just seemed so cosy! And the accomodation looked great as well.
I will hopefully send my ucas form as soon as i can but my school tend to do the oxbridge and medicine people first and forget about the rest
Thank you so much! -
Re: Aeronautical Engineering at University of Southampton
No problem. Just preferred southampton really, quite liked the sound of transferring onto spacecraft systems engineering, which I'm told I can probably do sometime in the first year since the first years of the courses are almost identical. Also once I got the offer from southampton I didn't fancy the drive down to imperial for an interview that probably wouldn't be successful when I allready had an offer from my favorite place (I live in leicestershire so it's a fair distance), just called them and said circumstances had changed and wouldn't be coming for an interview. Needless to say I didn't recieve an offer there lol.
Perhaps i'll see you a year and a bit from now! -
Re: Aeronautical Engineering at University of Southampton
I am quite interested in the spacecraft systems engineering course as well! Yeh i live in leicestershire as well (loughborough) and it is a long drive to Southampton too and the train prices are high too!!
Yeh hopefully a year from now! Fingers crossed -
Re: Aeronautical Engineering at University of SouthamptonI know its a bit late but feel free to ask me(Original post by Ram92)

Re: Aeronautical Engineering at University of SouthamptonHi i was just wondering when did you send your application off and when did you receive an offer? It is just that i sent mine off on Friday and i am already feeling the nerves!(Original post by MrGreedy)
I know its a bit late but feel free to ask me
! The wait is argghh even though it has been two days!
.
Also how are you finding the course and Southampton? Hope it is all good!
Finally can "The Mongrel" answer to please. I would be grateful to hear both your opinions.
Thank you. -

I sent my application in October and I think i got an offer from them in January/February. Then they invited me for an open day, where they give you a lot more other details about the course, you look around the laboratories, talk to a member of staff, remember this is not an interview but just a friendly chat and they will answer any questions you may have.
I am in the first semester of my second year now, and it said to be the most hardest semester throughout your entire couse. So it is one that you cant afford to do bad in. Apart from that the course is good, only bad thing is that the lectures are not in one place but throughout the entire highfield campus. -
Re: Aeronautical Engineering at University of SouthamptonIm torn between accepting an offer from imperial and southampton... im sure the course isd better at imperial but the student life much better at southampton.(Original post by The-Mongrel)

how much difference would it make graduating from these two universities?
what would your view be? if you had the chance would you have gone for imperial over southampton? if you had the offer? -
Re: Aeronautical Engineering at University of SouthamptonHi. Im in a similar situation ryt now...confused between southampton and imperial. what did u finally pick? and why? pls help. thanks(Original post by DJ_2_B)

Re: Aeronautical Engineering at University of SouthamptonI chose Imperial eventually. It was not an easy choice!(Original post by unr)
Hi. Im in a similar situation ryt now...confused between southampton and imperial. what did u finally pick? and why? pls help. thanks
Here are the main facts to consider:
Imperial will give you a better degree, but you will be worked (much) harder. Keeping up with the workload is very hard and a few people dropped out at thestart of the year cos they couldnt handle it. For people who disagree that imperial's degree is better, it's hard to compare degrees really but as a statistic, 40% of the mclaren F1 aerodynamics team are imperial graduates.
You have to like the city life. Imperial is right in the centre of london, and while that may sound exciting and fun, some people find it hard to handle. personally i think it's great here but you will want to see it yourself first! One thing you might not be aware of is the guy/girl ratio at imperial is 2:1 (its an engineering university - make friends with some medics and you will be fine!). There is also a large proportion of international students (not a bad thing, takes some getting used to though!) London is also expensive.
I can't compare it to southampton really, i can only give you the facts about imperial! I think ultimately it comes down to whether you want to be worked really hard and get a really impressive degree or be worked less hard, have more fun and have a good degree! Just remember you will be spending 4 years of your life (possible longer!) where you choose so make it the right one!
Have you had your offers yet? what grades do you have so far?
(a tip for if you choose imperial - apply for the cheaper halls - they have a better social life! I would suggest garden weeks or fisher! )
! Dont worry it is not an interrogation. Thank you!
