There will be lots of drinking going on at all Freshers weeks up and down the country. It's not peculiar to Exeter nor a special problem in Exeter. You can see the details of the student who died in this Guardian article following the inquest, harsh as it may seem the difficult truth is that he was an adult who poisoned himself with alcohol and died as a result of his own poor judgement and stupidity. He did not die during Freshers week.

Anyone who feels pressured to drink to the extent that they drink more than they want to needs to question a) their self-control and b) the suitability of their friendship group. However a few really good hangovers will do that job for you.

And the answer to your implied question is: yes, you can have a social life with consuming alcohol to excess. At the very least, drink coke and say its vodka and coke and act more drunk than you are.

I must admit, it's not the drinking itself that bothers me, it's the fact that loads of young 'uns will be outlasting me and I, no doubt, will "bravely" try to keep up....

Not in halls. The guild is MUCH tighter on initiation ceremonies and health and safety on society nights out, that's all. You have resident tutors (read, wardens) living in your halls to keep order if things get super rowdy at an unacceptable hour.

Oh, for the record, here's what to do on each day if your fancy going out.

Sunday: Most people's first day. Most places have nights on but I wouldn't recommend clubbing. Stay in and drink/socialise with your new best friends.

Monday: Go to arena. Tickets usually sell out in advance but the welcome week team might have some spares/be selling them.

Tues: Arena again is good if a little cheesy. Mosaic (although a bit of a shoebox) does good tuesdays too and is great for rah spotting (they love it in there).

Weds: Timepiece (the biggest club here) does sports night on weds. Go only if you like bolting drinks/playrugby/you row/you thiink rugby players/rowers are fit.

Thurs: ROCOCOS. This is the night that freshers go for most. If you're one for going out this will become a staple for you. Second years + tend to go to arena on thurs though.

Friday: Timepiece's best night. It's an "Indie" night but that just means the usual music interspersed with Journey and MGMT.

Sat: Town's full of marines so don't bother. You could do the lemmy (lemon grove) but it manages to be both expensive and bad all at once.

I wouldn't go out on the sun. You'll lectures the next day and you should all start as you mean to go on.

I hope that helps, pick and choose those nights as you wish.
So how do you get tickets in advance for those nights/how expensive are they?

Marines sound fine to me hahah!!!

You say that now...

The clubs usually emply students to sell tickets for them as reps. they get £1 commission per ticket they sell so it's thats your thing it's not a bad way to make a little money. Tickets are rarely ever more than £3 with your unicard (you'll get info on what to do about that if/when you get your confirmed place). I think Rococo's is £4 on the door which might be an exception. Prices double on saturday night wherever you go in town.

I'm @work atm, but I will come back later and post a list of cool places to go which aren't clubs. The main one is the Old Firehouse, though.
I've just looked at the Events booklet; is it me or was I expecting a whole lot more different societies? :s-smilie:

Ah okay, is there a list of societies I can look at?

Also, where are the societies located in Welcome Week, are they in a big hall with their own tables or something?

There's a list here - dunno if it's a complete list; the Guild seem to have changed their website again.

Bit more info here - basically all the societies and whatnot set up on the Sunday at the end of Welcome Week. It always used to be in a big hall (the Great Hall, no less) but you can't get to that at the minute 'cos of the forum building site so I think this year it's a bit more spread out.

This was for people who are. Sorry dude, I did say at the start.

Nice pubs/more chilled hangout spots include:

The Old Firehouse. £1 entry but they do the best selection of drinks/wines/anything liquid in town. They're open until after the clubs shut and do massive pizzas which are great value. Really relaxed and rustic on the inside and just super chilled out in general. Sometimes puts on bands as well, usually chilled out ones though.

The Ram. This is the student bar on campus. It's pretty cheap as it's a little subsidised but it's a good meeting places. Has a good pub quiz on a monday night too which is usually really well attended.

The Imperial. Exeter's main Wetherspoons. Yeah, it's a 'spoons but it's both massive and really impressive to look at inside and out. Great meeting place and they usually show most sporting events there. Huge beer garden too so you can sample the best summers England has to offer.

I hope that goes some way towards satisfying you. Don't be mistaken, there is WAY more to exeter than it's selection of small (and on the whole fairly ordinary) clubs.
Drinking games ARE banned in halls, at least catered ones...

Just don't get caught, kids.
Also, is the rumour true that Arena society cards aren't making a comeback next year? (Not that it affects me, mind, I'm abroad) but the card gets you discounted entry on Monday (I went once I think?) and free entry on Tuesdays and Thursdays (the best nights, and not full of annoying Freshers).

They are you mahoosive rumor spreader!

I got an email a few weeks ago about them from Arena, so kids go to the squash and join up to the cheapest club you can find to get your Arena card!
