Re: Oxford application for geography. What do i need to do?English (and I would say Literature more than the Language) is a perfectly good A-level subject to take with view of applying for an Oxbridge Geography course. Being able to critically analyse and situate texts is a good skill to have, particularly if you are looking to specialise in Human Geography. Moreover, most of your assessments at university will be in the form of reports and essay exam questions. Doing a subject that helps you develop critical writing skills will certainly be beneficial.(Original post by OrmondDrone)
I'd drop English at A-level. It won't help your geography application and you don't seem that strong in the subject. -
Re: Oxford application for geography. What do i need to do?
I absolutely agree. In fact, having done English, Maths and Geog at A Level, and now graduated from Geography at Oxford, I would definitely say that English turned out to be more valuable.
Geography is a broad subject, with as many sides as there are A level subjects. I definitely dont think there is a any set of A levels that will stand you above the rest. In fact, I find the recent press about the value of Media Studies quite sad, especially coming from the Tories. Much of my degree, including a major piece of coursework was about geopolitical representation and the media; a vibrant discourse in Geographical literature attracting some of the biggest names in the world at the moment. -
Re: Oxford application for geography. What do i need to do?I'm in the same position as you, I got the same number and grades ar GCSEs (bar one grade). Mind if I ask if your still applying for geog and where? thanks(Original post by morrisajm)
Just donr my gcse's and got A*A*AAAABBB dont know if these are good enough for a competitive course at oxford however i know that oxford ranks around 7 for geography which incidently is my favourite subject. One of my A*'s was in geography do i still have a chance of getting a place on the course. What else to do with geography can i be doing to improve my application that is course related.
Thanks

Re: Oxford application for geography. What do i need to do?english would be useful there's a surprising amount of essays in geography and keeping up the practice is important.(Original post by OrmondDrone)
How are we supposed to know about your PS? You've not posted anything about what you've put in it so we can't make any suggestions on how to improve it.
Your A level choices are weak for a top uni - best A-levels for a degree in geography are Geography, Maths and a third subject (economics is okay or a science) and you should take chemistry to AS or maths if you haven't got it as a full A level.
I'd drop English at A-level. It won't help your geography application and you don't seem that strong in the subject.
