Joint honours personal statement

Im thinking of applying to 'Economics and maths' degrees and i have decided on four choices. For my last choice i am deciding weather to put down a straight maths course or a maths and actuarial science course ( both offered at manchester).
My personal statement will be about maths and economics and because actuarial science contains some economics its seems that this would be the obvious choice and also i have thought about being as an actuary as a career. On the other hand i feel that a maths and actuarial degree will be too specialised and would prefer to do the straight maths degree but in my personal statement i will mention economics. Which course would you advise me to take? Has anyone had any experience of getting into a straight maths course with a mixed personal statement?

On average a student doing a Mathematics degree will spend about 12-14Hours a week in classes while an Economics student will spend about 8-10Hours a week. The 2nd degree is much more flexible and covered a wide range of topics/subjects from History to Maths.

If you do Maths maybe it will stand out in the short-term to employeers but an Economics degree will benefit you in the long-term because of the skills and expertise you have. For a Financial role you need to know what you are talking about to others and how to crunch numbers and Economics offers all this.

Also I realised if you do a Math degree, would you really want to spend a year on knowing why Differentiation works? Or would you rather spend a year looking at International Trade between different countries?

Same as me, Maths and/with Econ

I enjoy both aswell and it just wouldn't feel right to drop one but not a lot of unis offer the course (Maths & Econ)

Right now, I've got LSE, Warwick, UCL

I wanted to apply to Oxford but it would be straight Maths, (coz Econ I seem to have no chance), and I know this could be a very hard course

But In my PS, I talk about Maths first, then talk about Economics..... my advice is to try and make it slide into one another.

N.B. If you're thinking of Bristol, don't be fooled by Bristol (Econ & Math) course, they don't like further math as one of your 3 main A-levels, which is a fail seeing that the course is so mathematical

Im thinking of morse at warwick, nottingham, southampton, and then deciding between ucl(econ and stats), sheffield, york, straight maths at manchester or maths and actuarial science at manchester....
Where did you hear that information about bristol. I would love to apply there but there places to applications ratio seems extreme...

I need to speak to my teacher if it's worth it, but If I did it would only be at Oxford, the rest would probably be maths &/with economics!!

Haha Yehh. Im from Manchester by the way and I can tell you for sure...Manchester University ROCKS! The Campus' are great but shame that on Oxford Road were they all mainly are, half is dominated by Manchester University and the other half Manchester Met. Sheffield supposed to do a good Economics and Maths course?

I know sheffield is decent for maths by its ratings and its economics department seems decent enough, with regards to financial mathematics i would only do the maths and/with financial maths course but i dont think there is a need to do a degree soley based on financial maths...
