Football/sport at Leicester Uni

Does anybody know anything about the football arrangements at the uni? This seems to be one of the factors not mentioned very heavily on the open day/in the booklets and I was just wondering if anyone knows more about this than me. I'm hoping to get back into playing on a regular basis and getting my fitness up, plus a footy team will be good banter/nightlife thus good for socialising with folk not in my house!

For eg, does the uni have its own team (which is usually quite a good standard and too good for average plodders like me!) and then separate teams for each different house (a JF team, a GMS team etc) where the ones who are rubbish but still want to play can show off their sub-standard ability!

I'm guessing a 2nd/3rd year would be best placed to help here but anyone who knows anything do shout up!

Thanks in advance.

Don't know for sure but i would put money on it you will find a team.

There is a uni wide team, well a few teams, there is also often faculty teams, as for halls teams i dunno i would imagine there is somethign like that even if its 5 a side.

There is a football team that have quite a few different teams within it. There are teams from first team to about 5th team I think! There is also a freshers team. It depends about the halls JCR but last year they did try and arrange inter-hall football matchs. Hope that helps.

Apparently there are 32 sports on offer according to the Student's Union website, but it's a bit brokeded at the mo. I can't seem to get any comprehensive list of them all.

However I do remember seeing mentions of a Hockey society, a Fell-walking society, a Cricket society [or at least a Cricket team as part of a larger society] and a Badminton society, and I remember someone at the open day confirming that there was a swimming society. I also kind of recall a Rugby Union society, but I have no idea where I've seen it.

I'll definitely give fell-walking a go. Got to get to used to hiking for physical geography . . .

Thanks alot mate. Might give American football a blast. Bit dissapointing with the lack of combat sports though, would of liked some boxing or muay thai or even wrestling. Already go to mma/sub wrestlign classes down at leicester shoot, but would be nice to have summit to do.

See they have karate, taekwon do and jujutsu but TMA dont really tickle my fancy other than judo which isnt listed.

Rugby seems popular but never played it before and i'd get put int hte 3rd team rejects lol

^^ Would love a (kick)boxing club as well.

Do we have to buy a sportscard from the university for £50, plus pay the membership fee for the individual club?

They can't afford or don't want to afford the insurance for full on contact, which i don't really get, atleast thats what i heard.

Years insurance at the mma gym i go to (leicester shootfighters) is only 15 quid, seems abit stupid if thats the reason. The uk education system is just lame when it comes to full contact sports
UK education system is lame when it comes to just about anything.

Yeah exactly, i didn't think it was that high and i would expect it could be covered by members but what ever, academics are pussies.

Mens lacrosse is a hard full contact sport, search lacrosse on youtube and the first result will give you an idea about what the game is like. I just made the fb group today (thats why there's only 11 people so far) there are more of us I promise! lol
lol not the first 30 secs of that vid though
