What worries me more than anything is that in your initial post, you mentioned "self-harming". Your friend should seek help via his GP asap on a voluntary basis - he doesn't want to run the risk of letting self-harming spiral out of control and thereby risking a "section" order, which could adversely affect his uni prospects.

a record of your problem will remain on your medical notes.

I agree, I don't think he has a mental health issue, as such.

As for his self-harming, I can't see it spiralling out of control any time soon, but I'm keeping a close eye on him to make sure that he's OK.

I stand corrected.

Though if it was me I'd rather talk it through anonomously with a councilor rather than my GP anyway.
