The Student Room Group
The best thing to look at is The Times online university guide as this has various scores based on the universities academic side etc. Regarding the student life side and accomodation the best thing to do would be to visit the student union websites of them both and also to visit the universities themselves to see the accomodation. Regarding what is the better university this can be subjective depending on what you are looking for.

The worst thing would be to look at a league table given how personal something like History is to study.

Essex has a fantastic history department which is often overlooked. Goldsmiths is good, slightly more cultural approach to their historical studies but the added benefit is that you'd be a student of the University of London and the relevant libraries, plus inter-collegiate teaching.
