The Beginning

With this blog, I hope to cover as much as possible – finance, first experiences, meeting people, the course. I hope you enjoy reading about my journey or might find it helpful in some way, and if not, hopefully I will at least gain a little something by writing it!

Where to start? With just under a week before I leave, I already feel like there’s so much happening.

I am heading to UEA, which was my insurance choice. I was disappointed when I missed my grades on results day but I quickly realised that I just had to adjust to the fact that my firm was a no hoper and I have since thrown myself into preparing for life in Norwich. I live just outside Manchester so I’m travelling quite a distance (around a five hour drive from my home), but my mum grew up in the area and having been there once a year on family holidays, I know the area pretty well and like it down there.

Because of the distance, my mum and I are leaving to drive down on Friday, staying over half way down so I get there earlyish on my move in day – Saturday. She won’t actually be leaving until the Sunday but she’s booked herself in to a Travelodge and so will be giving me ‘space’ to meet everyone etc, while still be near enough to see her a couple of times over the weekend.

I’ve already done most of my shopping, including kitchen equipment, china etc, bedding, towels and lots of other things that I can’t remember – all the stuff I’ve bought is currently piled in my brother’s old room waiting to be packed into the car. I’ve just got my clothes to sort through on Thursday and Friday.

Student finance is a typical worry as I’m not yet sorted. My Change of Circumstances hasn’t been process and therefore my fees loan is currently listed to be paid to Warwick while my maintenance loan dates correspond with Warwick’s term dates, with the first payment not due to be made to me until two weeks after my actual term begins! Hopefully this will all be done in time, however. My family income means I’m not eligible for anything above the basic loan of £3564 plus the fees loan and so my parents will be paying me a certain amount of money each month (don’t get me wrong – they can’t really afford to, but even though I plan to get a job as soon as I can, I need their money to live as my loan leaves me with only £300 once I’ve paid for accommodation). My dad basically looked in to the maximum amount Student finance will give a student who is entitled to everything and is topping my loan up to that amount (paid to me monthly over nine months – I was given the option for twelve months but though I might appreciate the money now in the hope that I will get a job at some point this year that can give me some money to save for the summer next year).

As for how I feel – I’m absolutely terrified! I’m beginning to feel bored at home (my current job can only give me one day a week) so perhaps I’m ready for something to happen but I don’t quite know if this is what I want to happen. The thought of moving away from my family is pretty scary and I can’t imagine not seeing/talking to them every day. And the idea of just having to start randomly talking to people I don’t know and making friends is pretty intimidating. But I’m hoping this is all stuff that will sort itself out eventually. I kind of wish there was someone from my school going to the same uni but I guess it’s just part of the experience.

All I have left to do this week is see as many people as possible to say goodbye and write an essay that the UEA history department has set! Luckily I don’t have to hand it in, but just have a draft ready. Unfortunately, I’ve not got very far – I think I’m a little out of practice after three months!

And that’s it for the moment. I will try and update fairly regularly, as things start to happen. Any questions, or comments, feel free to post.

Cooking!

Something I forgot to mention earlier - this blog will reveal my truly terrible eating habits to you all :p

My dad has decided that I should be cooking for myself this week so that I don't starve when I have to do it for real next week (personally, I see know difference in beginning my faillure at cooking this week - and think I should actually be making the most of my last week of parent-made freedom - than next week, but at least I can hopefully get away with not buying the food this week, as I've all but run out of money already!) Yesterday, my mum and I spent half an hour in Borders reading about eight different cookbooks and eventually settled on Student Cooking for Dummies (perfect for me ) which is one of these rather sarcastic, but amusing books that actually appears really useful, and another one that I can't remember the name of but is something along the lines of Essential Student Cooking and has over 400 recipes in, including the fairly basic ones that you'd think I should know how to make but don't!

Quite a lot of it looks interesting. This evening I microwaved (I'm not going to have an oven in my flat - only a convection microwave so I figure things that require a long amount of oven time aren't so good because there'll be eight of us fighting over one microwave!) myself a haddock fillet with lemon and boiled some new potatoes and peas. Ok, so I guess technically I didn't need a recipe book for it, but the books do actually have some more adventurous/interesting stuff in. And I made a gorgeous microwave sponge cake afterwards that only took three minutes to cook, and had warm strawberry jam at the bottom.

So now, I have to find something to make tomorrow - maybe a stir-fry...

/rather boringly random update.

I think I could easily get addicted to this blogging thing.

Good luck! People keep telling me that everything happens for a reason so I'm just going to trust that obviously this is what was always meant to happen and that my insurance is where I should really be.

Saying Goodbye!

Today I saw two of my best friends, probably for the last time before christmas (due to having a sudden last minute panic about quite how much I have to do before I leave and realising I should do something else this week other than non-stop socialising!) which was really sad. One of them, I have known since I was three, and this will be the longest I have ever been without seeing her (which is really weird actually).

It's strange though because even though I know I'm not going to see them ages, I really don't feel like everything is just abotu to change forever and that it's really happening. I'm currently thinking very much in the short term and focusing on getting through this week and next, without even stopping to consider that I am beginning to embark upon the beginning of a whole new part of my life.

We had a really chilled day at my friend's house. The person whose house we were at is going to Oxford and so still has over two weeks left to wait, which must be strange for her, especially as all the rest of our friends are leaving either this week or next pretty much. We made lunch for ourselves (macaroni cheese all from scratch so we could 'practice' :p) and then spent the rest of the afternoon doing not very much at all.

I kept getting a nervous fluttery feeling everytime I thought about it and when we hugged to say goodbye it felt really weird. I guess it's not going to hit me what's happening until I'm there on Saturday.

My plan for tomorrow includes finally writing this essay I've been set (I'm clearly not ready to be getting back in to work!) and starting to organise everything. Time is slowly moving on and I've got so much to do!

Leaving/Packing

Just a quick one before I go! My mum and I are about to depart to Peterborough where we'll be staying the night.

I've managed to pack everything into a variety of suitcases, boxes and plastic boxes and it went into my mum's car with surprisingly little hassle (it's a Picasso and the back seats were down which might explain it - plus I got my dad to it and as he said - it's a man's job! I'm pretty certain I'll have forgotten something but I've got the vitally important things and I've done a document check.

I've been feeling quite emotional today - when I've not been doing anything I've been in danger of bursting in to tears. I took my younger brother to his Saxaphone lesson so I could say goodbye to his teacher, who taught me clarinet for nine years and suddenly out of nowhere I was crying! As was she after we'd hugged a couple of times.

I've also got to say goodbye to my dad (who can't fit in the car!) which is going to be tough!

Anyway, I'll update properly when I'm there - which will be tomorrow morning - as I'm leaving any minute now. My next post will come from UEA! :s

UEA History is awesome. You'll love it. And Norwich is a fine city! Warwick??? Where's that? It's in Coventry, how clever is that? And, frankly, who wants to go there?!

Not disputing what your saying apart from the failiure of national geography displayed by the above statement. Anyway, enjoying the blog so far.

Whoops! It would appear I am almost three weeks in and haven't updated this yet with all the news about freshers!

In my defence, when we got internet the Monday after I arrived, I spent ages writing a long detailed post about everything and anythign that had happened but then, thanks to some major network/computer errors I was having for a few days I lost the whole post and tbh, my heart wasn't quite in making a new one. I figure I should try again though, as otherwise this is pretty much a failure of a blog.

Thanks for all your comments too, everyone

Anyway, I'll try not to give you a blow by blow account as quite frankly you would get bored, I would get bored and nothing would be achieved.

First impressions of UEA are very positive. Arrivals weekend was, I imagine, fairly typical. I arrived, was pointed in the right direction by some helpful yellow t-shirted helpers and given my key along with further directions to my actual accommodations. My mum and I were quite early so we didn't have to wait to get a parking space outside the accommodation itself (there was a complex queuing system in the main car park while you waited for one of the more limited spaces in the accommodation car parks).

Anyway, I'm in a nice house called Yew, with about six flats of eight rooms, so it's small but big enough to find good people. My room is small and at first I panicked about space but it turns out that storage is good and there was plenty of room for everything (though one thing I have found is that in a small room, if you put the smallest thing down somewhere it shoudln't be the place instantly looks a mess!) The best thing about it is that it has a massive desk with space for pretty much anything you want.

The only downside about the room when I first arrived was that instead of a mattress on the bed there was a very hard, green piece of foam. For a week, I was literally unable to sleep unless I was very drunk (not always a good idea). But this was fixed by going to the accommodation office and asking for a new mattress (I expected them to be awkward but with only a little bit of persuasion I found a new mattress delivered two days later - and since then, the rest of my house have also been asking for them (though there's now a waiting list so it would appear I was lucky!) The new mattress is actually a proper one and so has been a lot easier to sleep on (though I've still not been sleeping great - my hours have been very weird...)

It also took us about a week to get hot water! Cold showers are really not fun, though I did get around it once by going to the pool for a swim and using the shower there.

The people I've met have been great. For me, I've found that my friends have come from my flat and my house, rather than the people on my course. This is a bit of a pain in some ways as not really having a group on my course to hang out with means I don't really have anyone to sit with in lectures, but I'm hoping that I'll get closer to some of the people in my seminar groups and I've made some really good friends who aren't on my course, so I should be happy with that!

I went out quite a few nights in freshers. UEA is apparently one of the only unis not to have a proper freshers, in that while there are activities going on in the evening, there is regular uni stuff and lectures happening in the day, and the History school seemed to schedule a cruel amount of 9am starts! So for a week, everyone was pretty much dead!

One of the best things about Freshers, was that I was really worried before I went that I'd be expected to go out and get really drunk every night or people would think I was anti-social. As it was, there was usually at least one other person staying in so when I didn't feel like going out, I didn't have to - I still went out every day from Sunday to the following Monday except for two, but I didn't feel like it mattered that I chose to stay in on the two nights I did. I've also found that the people in my flat are similar to me, in that when we we go to the LCR (union) on a night out they're not that bothered about staying right until the end and most nights we've left, not really early, but after having a good night and being ready for bed. It's completely my style of clubbing as 3/4 am finishes are not me at all!

I was struck by the dreaded freshers flu in week 2 and believe me, it is the least fun thign with Freshers in its name! I felt absolutely awful for at least two days, and pretty rough for the next two. I missed a couple of days of uni because I didn't want to spread anythign and tbh, I could hardly get out of bed! Loads of people have been ill to some extent though and in every lecture there are people coughing! I just seemed to get it quite bad for a few days. I finally felt properly better at the beginning of this week though which is good.

I don't have many contact hours during the week, but do have quite a bit of reading etc to do. I'm trying my best but still haven't quite got into the swing of things yet! I've also managed to get a weekend job at Phones4u which is initially temp until xmas but will give me some money!

Weekends so far have been strange - they are very quiet. Some people go home, and not much else seems to happen, apart from in the evening. I guess a lot of people use them for working or recovering from teh week before but it's not what I expected!

I've been hit quite hard with homesickness - there's nothing wrong with the uni - I'm perfectly happy here - I just miss my home and my family like crazy! It started when I was ill, and I just wanted to be at home in my own bed, but even now when i'm better, I have a kind of aching longing to just be at home again for a couple of days and to see everyone. I've seriously not met anyone here from anywhere remotely close to where I live so that's also a bit lonely, as I feel very far away when most people seem to live so close. I'm going home for a weekend in November but it seems like so far away still! It's my birthday next weekend and even though Im hoping to have a good time - I can already see that it's probably going to be a low point for me as it'll be the first time I'll have had a birthday away from home.

Money-wise, I feel like I've spent a fortune! My loan finally came in, but most of it is going straight to accommodation. I'm hoping spending is going to decrease a bit soon, as I'm kind of worried but I just keep telling myself that a lot of the tihngs I'm buying now - books, hoodies, etc are one-off purchases that I won't be making every week.

Cooking is going ok so far - I haven't killed myself yet. It hasn't taken long to slip in to the student diet of pasta all the time, but I've also been eating fish, chicken and potatoes etc so I'm getting some variety!

I think that's all I can think of right now, though if you have any specific questiosn feel free to ask!

I think you are me! We seriously seem to be living the same life! I'm yet to actually meet anyone from Manchester or even remotely near.
