there's bound to be as there is some compression - but if you listen to them through a decent set of speakers (I have some Missions) then it's easy to spot the difference

What are you ripping at? All my stuff's at 192 VBR and I can't really tell the difference, but if it had been at 128 CBR I could.

Fair nuff, but I still think it's hardly noticable, and that it's a sacrafice worth making (in my opinion anyway)

So what kindda stuff you listen to?

Allsorts - mainly not chart/mainstream - so alternative rock/folk, 50s-60s jazz, 20th century classical,

Am currently listening to Atmosphere "God Loves Ugly" and recently have been continually listening to (of all things  ) a recommendation from Raph - James Blunt "Back to Bedlam" - talented, passionate singer-songwriter dude

That may well be true if I ripped at top quality - but I rip at a lower quality because I only have 40Gb on the IRiver to play with - and I don't want to rerip everything for the sake of playing through my comp for ease. I don't mind changing CDs and I have a lot of them so it'd take a long time to get them all on the computer anyway.

I also have a 40 gig hard drive, but I have an external one, may be worth considering, but of coure you'll have to spend money on it. I'm onky listing options.
But of course, if CDs are what you want, do for it mate!

You got it all on your computer?

If so,

www.audioscrobbler.com

It's the begining of this thread.
It's really cool. I'm too tired to explain what it is, read the first page of the thread. It's all there.
