Re: Want to study Pharmacy...HELP! ThreadHmm, I guess you could say Bath, Manchester, Notts, LSOP and UEA.(Original post by Besakt)
What is the best university for pharmacy?
I can't pick out the best pharmacy school tbh.
Double-check this but Notts should be ok with it....(Original post by Khwab x)
i know you guys will hate me for this question but which unis would consider a medicine personal statement, or maybe request a pharmacy specific ps?
i need to pick 2 from uea, lsop, brighton, bath...any more?Last edited by petzneo; 11-12-2011 at 02:12. -
Re: Want to study Pharmacy...HELP! Threadnotts dont accept medicine applications for pharmacy sorry...they said during a talk on an open day :/(Original post by petzneo)

Re: Want to study Pharmacy...HELP! ThreadI actually think its a good idea....I guess they don't want pharmacy to turn out like biomed + they have enough applications as it is!(Original post by Jessica.Jane23)

Re: Want to study Pharmacy...HELP! ThreadThis is my plan. Pharmacy after Genetics (graduate this year) though I think I'm probably a fool for even applying. I picked a lot of toxicology and pharmacology type modules and even geared my FYP towards pharmacy but even so, I'm still going to have to take the full four years.(Original post by Sprockette)
I haven't read the whole thread so forgive me if this question has been asked a million times - is anyone doing Pharmacy after completing another degree? I'm wondering how many years I would have to do and thought I'd ask here first before getting in touch with a uni directly. I have a BSc (Hons) Nutrition with a lab project and some pharmacology modules and did a Biomedical top up. Looking at the modules in a Pharmacy degree though has me thinking it'd take a few years to complete Pharmacy though
Anyone with any experience in Pharmacy after a first degree?
Btw, a little OT from this post, but I applied to UCAS at the end of Nov and have had acknowledgement e-mails from Nottingham, Cardiff and Bath, an outright rejection from Aston (after only 9 days - a bit of a confidence killler!) and haven't heard a single thing from Medway. Should I be concerned that this is it? I'm a bit worried that loads of people are getting their interviews and I'm getting nothing. I know the unis don't need to make all their choices yet but should I be gearing myself towards more rejections? (I'm expecting a 2:1 in my degree, I've been working at Boots as a HCA for the last three years and well, I have other qualities too.) Is is possibly because my application was a touch later than most people's?
Finally, when I did my A Levels I was having some problems with my health just before and during my final exams and my grades suffered a fair bit as a result. I had to write to all the universities I was applying to at the time to let them know so it could be used when considering me as an applicant. I got through it though and Cardiff accepted me for Genetics. I am concerned though that I'm being judged for my A Level grades (afterall, I don't actually have my degree yet) by the admissions offices for the universities I've applied to. I don't feel like I should STILL be making excuses for myself for this degree - surely A Levels are almost negligible in comparision to a degree? Should I write to them to let them know what happened or is that a truly bad idea?

I graduated in last May with a 2:1 in Pharmacology from the University of Glasgow and got direct 2nd year entry to Pharmacy at Strathclyde.
Supposedly gaining 2nd year entry is a rare thing for Pharmacy Schools to do but if you email about you should be able to get replies. -

Re: Want to study Pharmacy...HELP! ThreadYeah... I think so too.(Original post by petzneo)
Im starting to think that Strathclyde is the only university to do this...
I emailed RGU when I was applying and they said because of my degree that they would consider giving me second year but I was to apply for first year entry and they would decide at a later date :/ but my friend also emailed and they said no straight away. I dunno? -
Re: Want to study Pharmacy...HELP! ThreadI think you're right. Last summer I e-mailed every pharm school in the uk before applying to ask about direct second year entry (I already have a degree in chemistry) and the only one that said it was possible was Strathclyde, all the rest said I'd have to start in Year 1.(Original post by petzneo)

Even at Strathclyde it's not a given. My understanding is it depends on how many students drop out at the end of the first year, they can then fill those spaces with graduates for the start of the second year. And just having a degree doesn't seem to be enough, there are certainly others on the course at Strathclyde who applied with degrees (and industrial experience) who were forced to start in year 1.

Re: Want to study Pharmacy...HELP! ThreadI see...well then I guess its a matter of luck! How are you finding the course at the moment? Do you feel as though your degree has provided the foundation you need to begin from year 2?(Original post by MaturePharm)

I think they tell you to apply for 1st year entry just incase they do have don't have places for 2nd year. It means more chance of getting on the course(Original post by BigDirty)

Um, what course did your friend do, was it different to yours?Last edited by petzneo; 03-02-2012 at 14:24. -
Re: Want to study Pharmacy...HELP! ThreadSo far not too bad. It was a bit of a shock going back to Uni after so long in industry (never quite sure whether the brain would still retain info) but the first few exams have gone ok. It is quite a steep learning curve initially as I've obviously missed all the things taught in the first year but to counter that any classes that are based around my degree subject (i.e. chemistry in my case) are easy and so require little effort allowing me to spend more time on the things I'm not so good at (biology, pharmacology etc.)(Original post by petzneo)

Overall compared to all the other students on the course I'd say I'm doing fine.

Re: Want to study Pharmacy...HELP! ThreadNo, it was the same course.(Original post by petzneo)
.
I done Pharmacology so there is quite a lot I've covered before which is nice cause it means I can focus on the stuff I am not so good at as MP said.
Sometimes it does get boring though, and I didn't take a break between my courses so on occasion I do get fed up and enjoy a good moan, but I love it really. -
Re: Want to study Pharmacy...HELP! Thread
i'm particularly interested in studying pharmacy at strathclyde, they ask for AABB, alongside H english, which i have not done this year, im predicted AAAA in my highers (maths chemistry physics and computing) and A at int2 english and plan to go on next year, but when i apply, will i get a conditional or unconditional without english? will i even get into it?

Re: Want to study Pharmacy...HELP! ThreadHi again! Just wanted to say thank you for helping and making me feel better about applying... I got my grades up to AAA in January and I've now firmed Cardiff for pharmacy, so I hope I'll keep my grades up to get there in September(Original post by petzneo)
I think as your AS levels are very near to B's and A's, you will be just fine. I will remind you that you must get that chemistry to a B minimum. If you work hard this year, learn from the mistakes you may have made in your AS then I see no reason for not getting an offer.
Making a good impression at interview and writing a good P.S. are the others important things to consider. Your university choice are good as they are a mix of big end and low end offers.
So good luck and let us know how it goes!

Best thing I can advise is ring up the university if they're not giving you a good enough response via Email!
I'm not too sure on the whole BTEC things, sorry
